Avatar f tn Dry socket is rarely associated with upper molar extraction. Post -op pain of upper molar extraction is generally minimal or non at all. However, smoking does encourage infection and delayed wound healing.Complete the full antibiotics course is essential, although you may be free of symptoms after 2-3 days of antibiotics. Tmj symptoms may be triggered by stessful eventsInternal derangement of tmj or disc displacement may or may not be reduced via occlusal appliance treatment.
Avatar n tn The wisdom tooth on the top right side and the molar next to it. Yesterday (the first day after the extraction), I felt only a little discomfort and thought that today I would be fine. But today (the 2nd day after) I could barely open my mouth, and it hurts to move my right jaw. Is this normal? Will it go away? Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting stiff and hurting?
Avatar n tn I had a molar extracted after several years of root canal and infections. At the time of extraction, the tooth had pushed the infection down into my jawe bone. The pain has gotten worse eversay sice extraction. I went back to the dentist thinking he could give me a prescription for anitbiotics and he treated it as dry socket. He put some medication down in the hole, which only numbed my mouth and not down into the jaw where it hurts and is swollen.
Avatar n tn It's hard to tell if it's food or a "scab". I don't want to remotely poke around to find out. The pain is a throbbing in my neck and cheek with sharp, acute pain at the extraction site. I am having a hard time sleeping more than 3 hours at a time. Could it be infected or a dry socket? Or possibly just trauma to the jaw due to the difficulty in extraction? Thank you!
Avatar m tn Dry socket almost always occurs in the lower jaw molar extraction, particularly third molar. Prevention of dry socket includes aseptic surgical procedure, antibiotic prophylaxis, primary closure of wound site with or without collagen plug , appropriate administration of post-op antibiotics, and avoidance of cigarette and alcohol consumption.
Avatar m tn This is my story, I had a RT upper molar pulled in Feb 11, 2016 by the oral surgeon. 1 week later I was having a lot of pain and bleeding. It Turned out that I had a dry socket. Returned to the oral surgeon to have it packed several times. It started to heal, but continued with the pain. I returned back to him, he put me on four rounds of different oral antibiotics.
Avatar f tn My molar cracked from eating some food. On June 8, 2015, I went to the dentist and she said that I need it to be extracted. As she looked at the x-ray, she said it is infected to the root. I replied that it's not good because infection can spread. She agreed. She then proceeded with the extraction. I had immense pain. She tried her hardest to pull it out with several times of it "popping" . My head jerked when this happened. This happened a few times.
Avatar n tn Dry socket is frequently associated with lower third molar extraction. I assume you did take antibiotics and the pathogen involved is probably resistant to the one you took. It's advised that you go to see your dentist to switch antibiotics. In my experience, clindamycin 150-450mg/dose,#1Q.I.D. for a week.plus metronidazole 250mg,#1Q.I.D.generally clears up dry socket in 3 days. However, smoking is a signifacant contributing factor to dry socket.
1809287 tn?1316744936 i have been in pain for a few days now, and am worried as to what it may be. ive considered dry socket, but the pain is not in my gums it is in my jaw and in the tooth beside the extraction site. i have been taking antibiotics, and painkillers, but it just doesnt get rid of the pain fully. there are stitches that go from the extraction site all the way up towards my upper jaw, which i dont understand why they are there, or what the dentist did to me.
Avatar f tn also, sometimes my patients complain about dry socket for a couple weeks after the actual event occurs. Even when the extraction site looks healed visibly. I would still get the doctor to look at it, at least to make sure there are no root spurs left in the area, just in case its not dry socket.
Avatar n tn I am having diffculties opening my mouth because of the pain and soreness. What I need to know is this normal to have pain in the jaw area after a wisdom tooth extraction? And if so, how long should I expect to experience this pain?
Avatar f tn sound like dry socket to me also! i just got over dry socket. I had my farthest back bottom molar extracted after my dds perferated the tooth during a botched root canal. anways 2 days later i was in the worst pain of my life!!! i went in and sure enough i had dry socket...and you betcha smoking is one of the reasons for dry socket...mine was casue i choked and coughed and disloaded the blood clot. my dds had to come in 7 days in a row...
Avatar m tn This was 4 days ago but the abcess is still there and I have some throbbing pain in the lower jaw and ear on that side. The extraction site has white spots beside it. I have been brushing it with my tooth brush to keep it clean and rinsing in hot saline (3 times a day) and also Corsodyl mouth wash (twice a day) The spots could be a bit of bone but I am concerned it is infected. I can't take any more antibiotics as it may cause resistance. What do you recommend?
Avatar n tn there is always a underlying level of pain that is present, plus pain rises and falls every few minutes from the extraction point, i.e.. the socket, it is very localised. I have had root canals carried out on both the teeth either side or No.6 so the nerves are no longer present. I do not suffer from any.....
Avatar n tn I can only tell you the way I manage dry socket, if the patient does develop post-op pain of extraction site 3 days later after surgical procedure, I 'll administer local anesthesia, and thoroughly curette the socket, place colla-plug(a collagen product), and suture the wound. Systemic administration of amoxicillin+ metronidazole or clindamycin+ metronidazole. OTc pain killer ,depending if the patient need or not. Patients rarely suffers from post-op pain more than 3 days.
Avatar f tn You can definitely get a dry socket after a tooth extraction. You are not supposed to use straw's or smoke right after having it done. You probably should not have cleaned it out because a blood clot is supposed to form. Using warm salt water was a good idea. but, you should not swish to hard. Go back to your dentist and he will pack it and if there is an infection, he may give you an antibiotic for it. He may also prescribe a pain med.
Avatar m tn If it was an infection (dry socket) you would have been in excruciating pain, so based on what you describing I do not think it is a dry socket. Give it another couple of weeks and if you still have discomfort please see the oral surgeon again for evaluation.

Avatar n tn still have severe pain in jaw and ear after surgical extraction of two jaw teeth. had a dry socket 2 weeks ago but still have severe pain and nausea.
Avatar n tn I had a root filled tooth removed on 8th May this year (2nd to back lower molar) which turned into a dry socket. This lasted for about a week before I found out that the tooth next to it (back molar next to it) also had an abcess on it and needed to come out (both extracted teeth had be root treated). When the 2nd tooth was removed it didnt bleed at all and consequently it turned into yet another dry socket!!
Avatar n tn It paaears that you might have dry socket, which is commonly associated with lower mandibular molar tooth extraction. Seeing an oral surgeon is advised.
Avatar n tn The pain was dreadful. It was a dry socket and after week 3 my dentist said he thought the pain was coming from the lower right 7 - he x-rayed it and found the root canal on that tooth had failed also so I decided to have that extracted too as the pain was getting too much for me to bare.....well I soon found out that that pain was a "piece of cake" until I got the second dry socket - two in a row!!! How unlucky was that!!
Avatar f tn Thanks for your reply. It must be doing okay, because I have had no pain so far, no symptoms of dry socket.
446049 tn?1649005835 Hi, sorry you have pain. Do you have a fever? Also, is your pain really bad or just a ache? You usually get some pain after an extraction, but you could get a. Infection. So it's best to report it to the dentist. They can take a look and maybe an xray. At least you will know.
1682219 tn?1305019070 i have a dry socket after a lower left wisdom tooth extraction. my jaw bone is exposed. i have been successfully treating the pain at home by packing it with an olive/clove oil soaked piece of gauze which i change every 4-6 hours. i also rinse with salt water between dressing changes. however, i am now concerned that my packing the socket may be impeding the healing process.
