Spiriva is an anticholenergic used to treat various forms of COPD, but rarely asthma. The primary function of these medications is to reduce mucous in the respiratory system. They do have a mild broncho-dilating affect. I have not used Spiriva so I am unsure of its dosage, but I have taken ipratropium which is in the same class. As a neb solution it lasts 6 hours and as an MDI it last 4 hours. Check your prescription for dosing on this medication.
I use Albuterol, SPIRIVA and ADVAIR to control Asthma & COPD. I also take CRESTOR for cholesterol and ADVIL for arthritis.
In the last month (after starting SPIRIVA), when I first wake up in the morning, my eyes "roll" from right to left in an arcing motion when I attempt to focus on something. After a few attempts to focus on an object (the clock on the clock radio), the movement stops and I'm fine.
Any thoughts?

Special masks are available in the market to take care of dust and pollens.
I have wet macular degeneration as well as COPD and my ophthamalogist theorizes that the weird "blisters" that are appearing at the site of the oozing veins may be caused by the steroid content of my asthma medication ( namely Spiriva). So he has asked me to change to something that doesn't contain any steroids. My pulmonologist has suggested I add floridil to my albuterol nebulizer.
after checking, this bladder problem is a side effect of Spiriva...I had used Spiriva for over a year and the infections/non-infections got more frequent until I had to go to the urologist...I was on Azo Standard most of the time. I alerted my pulmonologist as to my problem and he took me off the Spiriva. Since being off the Spiriva, my breathing has gotten worse....my Dr said there was no replacement for Spiriva...I'm writing to find out what others might know.
Thanks for the input. My MD put me on Spiriva, and during the summer I experienced what felt like about 2/3 lung capacity. Symptoms improved when I went to the coast to get some "clean" air. When I got back to the valley I had a lung function test conducted, and the MD said Spiriva was not medically indicated. So now I'm not sure if I actually have COPD or not. Will take your advice and get a second opinion.

I agree. They still work for me but a part of me still misses my old white buddy, rather than this new blue imposter!
Spiriva is very gritty and irritating. Also it is very drying. I stopped using it. And I got off all inhaled steroids because of the serious problems they caused. Now I use only natural anti-inflammatories and am all the better for it (as well as richer). By the way, my COPD is as bad as yours.
I was taking acetylcysteine (Mucomyst) by nebulizer for congestion. This is not always available so I had to make do in some other fashion.
I have had another Respo say it is asthma. All I know is that sometimes I feel like I have something stuck in my throat lower down or some pressure in my chest. I am 36 and my blood pressure is excellent. I smoked for 3 years total. I am on advair and spiriva.
I am active and run on the treadmill for about 1/2 hour 5 days a week. I seem to feel worse or heavy chested and feel the need to clear my chest a couple of hours after I run.
Anyone have the same kind of experience or advice?

second question: am I doing harm using dilator more often than prescribed till I get into Dr. hopefully, Monday?
My concern is whether or not this is appropriate and not damaging to me. I have Lupus, asthma and continued sinusitis. My asthma is always out of control because of all this mucus. I cough up volumes. I also take antinflamatories , asmanex, spiriva , albuteral and hbp meds. I recently was put on nasonex which seems to be a little helpful. Any input appreciated.
Yes, it is possible to have constant shortness of breath with asthma. That is how I started and still am like when it is out of control. The one good news is that steroid inhalers work very well for asthma and do relieve the chest tightness, shortness of breath and any other symptoms you may have. You said that you were a smoker? Did you doctor check to make sure you don't have chronic bronchitis? Do you have a cough, and produce mucous? This is very important thing to treat early.
My husband is also on Spiriva and Advair. He also has a recue inhauler. They are not working as well as they use to. I agree with mary59az, use of O2 may help with the breathing. Are you a diabetic? If so, your sugar level may be low, and you may need a boost. Try to eat more protein foods to boost your enegry level a bit. I know your illness only gives you limited mobility. My lungs are great. I had a V6 test and the radiaation is very accurate. I take Spiriva once a day and Advair twice a day. Then I take breatihing treatments three times a day. And I have an inhaler. I still wheez like crazy at different times of the day. Help!

Hi, thanks so much for your response. I'm on Spiriva and use a Nebulizer with Albuterol. I have a rescue inhaler for my asthma. I did have a weeks course of Prednisone about 3 or 4 weeks ago when I had a bad spell. I don't want Advair as I used it for a couple of years for asthma before the COPD was diagnosed and didn't see any benefit from it at all.
Hopefully my doctor will help me find a way to improve a bit.
I am 26 weeks pregnant. I suffer asthma only when it is the hayfever period. Now I can't sleep because of it. Everytime I take a deep breath or simply breathing I can feel the tightening in the chest. Then it makes me coughs. I have taken ASMOL (the asthma pump), it doesn't help. It only last for less than an hour. And it is 2 am. I don't know what to do. Is there any other remedy to help me for now?
Coughing is my main symptom, in which I will hyperventilate to the point of passing out (almost). It is now to the point that I am probably triggering my asthma due to stress over my job from being out of work so much, waiting to be LET Go and the financial burden this disease has brought upon me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
