Imitrex and rebound headaches

Common Questions and Answers about Imitrex and rebound headaches

imitrex

Avatar n tn I have a friend that has dealt with debilitating migraines all of her life and she swears that the prescription drug Maxalt is the only thing that is effective for her and she has tried many medications including imitrex. She told me they are dissolvable tablets such that if you get sick and vomit, you won't vomit up the medication. I will get a migraine headache every once in a blue moon and I take the regular OTC stuff for it.
341042 tn?1244776427 Hi everyone. I have been suffering from migraines for 4 years now. They have become chronic, I have either a severe headache or a migraine every day. I'm taking preventive medications-so far my neurologist & I have not been able to find the one that will work for me. My dr. also talked to me about rebound headaches, so I have tapered down my use of triptans and painkiller (I usually take Fiorinal).
Avatar n tn I nee help. My mom is 45 and she has terrible headaches everyday. She takes Imitrex. She takes it everyday. She had bad headaches since 10 years ago, but now it's everyday that she has one. It's been like that for a month? What is wrong with her? I hope it's not some kind of tumor. Would migraine pill work for headache caused by tumor?
1100598 tn?1413127426 If it does turn out that you should not be using triptans, then analgesics that are less likely to cause rebound headaches may also be a good option for you. Many analgesics cause rebound headaches, although some have a much greater risk of doing so than others. Analgesics that we really want to avoid are often over-the-counter pain killers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
Avatar f tn so there is no reason to become an addict or to crave the medication, but ones body will still become highly dependent on the medication to a point that if you take the body off the medication abruptly you can cause seizures and even death... Imitrex is NOT like that!! Imitrex does not cause any sort of high or euphoria so you cannot become addicted to it, you will not "crave" it when you are not in pain...
Avatar f tn I ask because many narcotics cause rebound headaches. I thought I had migraines years ago but it was rebound headaches caused from the norco I took for my back surgery. The pain of rebound headaches is as bad as a migraine for sure. There are much better meds for real migraine.
Avatar n tn Last week I has an attack where it took them two Tortal shots , an Imitrex shot and a phenergan shot plus three oxycoten . I think I am in rebound headaches from over medication but my doctor does not want to listen . Help do I need a second opinion ?!?!
518798 tn?1295212279 ve heard about rebound headaches from taking to much medecine I feel she might have to give it all up and go cold turkey the doctor recently added a high blood presure med and another pain med saying that the Imitrix may be causing rebound headaches and that he would like to wean her off the Imitrix and she is now weak and having black outs so went to the hospital this morning IM sure it's from her blood pressure going to low, yikes, this is so frustraiting especially for her she hates being
1034911 tn?1389546066 Hello. I've suffered from daily headaches for over 10 years now and have been under the supervision of a neurologist, who hasn't always been the easiest to get into visit. Last week, I saw a new one and in desperation, I FINALLY took his advice to detox from Excedrin Tension that I have been usually on a daily basis for those "annoying" headaches that I wake up with.
Avatar m tn But, it was actually tension headaches. You may want to get a script for something like Imitrex and try it. I will tell you that for most people, the headaches go away in a month or so. So, try and just tough it out.
Avatar m tn Opiods will be more addicting, because they make you feel good. Ultram is addicting because it numbs and calms your senses. Imitrex doesn't feel addicting, but it affects your mind, and yes, can be addicting to many people. Again, anything that affects your mood or changes you - can be addicting. Everything from Allergy Pills, to cough syrup, to percocet, to sniffing glue - can be addictive. Just because the research doesnt support it at this time, doesn't rule it out.
Avatar n tn I know that they can be costly and only a few are very good at what they do, but my sister has had tension headaches all her life and she has found great relief from this. Ask around to find a good one in your area.
411939 tn?1281598444 Thank you for your replies! I am half American Indian and the other half is mainly German. My "family history" on both sides only goes back three generations before me as my great grandparents were removed from Nebraska and my German ancestors are immigrants (I believe). Nobody that I, or my mom, can think of has a history of migraines in these three generations - immediate AND extended family. My dad, who died a few years ago, was adopted and his biological mom is uncooperative.
768044 tn?1294223436 If you are getting more than 15 headaches a month... and 4 headaches a week sounds like more than 15 a month! Then, preventative medications could be an option. Are you currently taking any preventative medications? There are 3 first-line daily preventative medications: tricyclic antidepressants (specifically Amitriptyline or Nortriptyline); anticonvulsants (such as valproic acid or topiramate); or beta blockers (such as nadolol or propranolol).
Avatar f tn I can take Imitrex and get rid of the headache, however, always have side effects from the headache and the meds. Not to mention rebound headaches and expense etc. I have tried so many medications and treatments to prevent the headaches and nothing works. The most success I had was with Attenenol 50mgs QHS. This reduced the headaches to 1 every 3 weeks (heaven) then 1 weekly and now they are back to almost daily. The benefit lasted 4 months.
Avatar f tn I am 50 now and have migraines off and on since I was 17. I was prescribed fiorinal and it worked! I had suffered almost a week and was so sick but within 15 min of taking it, it was gone. But now, the doctors do not like to give this to me. I have no heart issues. No diabetes. Can you explain?
Avatar f tn does either imitrex or maxalt contain caffeine? I was taking Maxalt for migraines and it worked great! Now my insurance has decided I need to try Imitrex before they will approve coverage for the Maxalt. The Imitrex took about 2 hours to have any effect, but eventually my headache subsided. Since then I have had recurring headaches for 4 days.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Over-the-counter analgesics such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and ASA can cause rebound headaches and it is often suggested that migraineurs avoid over-the-counter pain killers. Instead of over-the-counter analgesics, prescription analgesics that are more appropriate for migraine headaches are often prescribed. There is an NSAID called Naproxen that is often prescribed for migraine headaches and Naproxen is less likely to cause rebound headache than the other NSAIDs.
1079216 tn?1258200805 s nothing I could help with not having gone through your severity other than I would def. make warding rebound headaches off a priority. Try and do some reading on Fioricet if you can, maybe talk to the neurologist about it next time you see him.
Avatar n tn I did talk to the Dr about the medication I was taking and he said it may have been rebound headaches so that is why I stopped them and went through the withdrawals. I told him how I was going and that I was still getting the headaches, so he said just don't use them daily, try and only use them 3-4 times a week. This is so annoying to me as headaches don't work like that. And migraines come in clusters too.
Avatar n tn so there is no point in taking them. And, the problem with over-the-counter NSAIDS is they can cause serious rebound headaches... which could explain some of those headaches you are getting every day. Yup, pain killers could actually be causing those. But... I am not suggesting that you stop taking something if it is working... nor am I suggesting you stop taking the NSAIDS cold turkey or anything, that will put you into more pain...
489786 tn?1255692879 ve taken many of the triptans and had good luck with all except Imitrex (got terrible rebound headaches!!!). Excedrin migraine, if I take it right away, works OK now that I take the topamax daily. I hope you get some relief soon.
Avatar f tn Valium is not working and I am drained and depressed by these headaches. I have never felt this much pain..labor was easier than dealing with these headaches.
591470 tn?1218975186 When I was taking a course of chemo I had the worst migraines ever and the Imitrex really helped me. It gave me slight light headedness but well worth the side effects. It is by prescription. If you haven't tried it.....give it is shot. It might help.
20841174 tn?1531305522 t take Tylenol or Ibuprofen too often or Imitrex (triptans) they can cause migraine rebound headaches. I took Trokendi XR for 3 years due to migraine variant but it has very bad side effects. I am trying to get off of it. I have one month to go. I take clonazempam for my vomiting at night it is a benzodiazepine, and then when I started getting the headaches I took imitrex. My neurologist said I can take 100mg. So I would ask a neurologist to see what they think is good for you.
Avatar f tn s experience with the imitrex has been - good or bad - and if they have any other tips of things I can try (non-medicinal) to reduce the pain, etc., of the migraines. Fortunately, (knock on wood), I haven't had a migraine since I saw my doc on thursday, so I haven't tried the imitrex yet. I'm always leary/hesitant about ANY new medication, so would definitely appreciate any advice about this med that anyone might have. Thanks so much!
