Common Questions and Answers about Imiquimod

Avatar m tn Hi guys, I've been using imiquimod to treat my genital warts for a little over a month now (applying it every other day), and I'm starting to get some lesions on the shaft of my penis. Most noticeably right under the head. It's very red and sometimes looks like an open sore if it's been chafed a bit, and sometimes looks like it's kind of scabbing over. Is this a cause for alarm? Should I put my imiquimod treatment on hold for a little while to let the lesions heal?
Avatar m tn ec_id=NCOMMS-20130305 Aldara is a cream used for topical treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer, and is thought to act through stimulation of anti-tumour immunity. The active ingredient, imiquimod, has been shown to stimulate toll-like receptor 7. Aldara also induces psoriasis-like lesions when applied to naive murine skin, and as such is used as a mouse model for psoriasis. Here we find that in naive murine skin, Aldara induces inflammation largely independently of toll-like receptor 7.
Avatar m tn Hi guys, I wanted to check and see what kind of side effects some people here have experienced from imiquimod (hopefully I'm not the only one here who has used imiquimod cream for GW). The reason I ask is because I've gotten a pretty nasty lesion right under the head of my penis (in an area that I really wasn't even directly applying the cream) and have seen some blood in my semen since I've began using this stuff. Has anyone gotten anything like these? Thank you.
Avatar n tn Ive been using imiquimod for almost the full term. The area affected is between my scrotum and inner thigh crease. In the matter of a night i got redness and sores. Ive stopped using it and wash daily. It doesnt help that its right where my jeans and underwear ride. Any help in relief?
Avatar m tn It started as a single tiny pimple like bump on my penis glans. After starting treatment with imiquimod, the lesion started to disappear, but as soon as it did, three others appeared on the other side of the penis glans. And after those disappeared, another one appeared...Is it common to new lesions appear during treatment? To make matters worse, I am in an acute Herpes infection, already diagnosed.
Avatar f tn I was referred to a gynecologist who suggested trying imiquimod. I decided to try tea tree oil, before trying imiquimod. The tea tree seemed to increase the itch, so I filled the imiquimod. I've since tried one application, I should be applying again this evening, but this point I am so stressed about the whole ordeal, I am thinking I should just get them surgically removed. They are now around my vaginal area, labia up to my anus (I apologize for being graffic...
Avatar m tn The bumps were located in my public area above my genitals. I was given Imiquimod to treat the infection. Toward the end of the treatment I developed itchy blisters at the treatment site. I went to my doctor and he said it appeared to be herpes. He swabbed the fluid and had it tested. It came back positive for the herpes virus but he said he did not type the sample and it could be HSV1, HSV2, or zoster. He prescribed valtrex and everything healed up.
Avatar m tn She did use a cream on him that appeared to temporarily work-- imiquimod cream 5% - drug name Aldara. It has 12 single application doses (each the size of a postage stamp). She writes: "Not much in them so it's hard to only use one on an application. It cost $180 more in some other drugstores. I bought two boxes and used for 5 ½ weeks Monday to Friday as the vet said.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with type 6 or 11 HPV last week when my gyno discovered a few warts on the hymen area. I was devestated. He gave me Imiquimod and it seems to be having amazing results except one thing: I'm in so much pain I can't go to the bathroom without crying or screaming. I called the doc and he gave me lidocaine which helps but even putting it on initially is unbearable. What can I do to soothe this pain? Its rattling my nerves and I'm horrified to go to the bathroom.
Avatar n tn I have talked to several docs some use cryo but I have not found any that use laser. None even brought up imiquimod which I learned about online and feel that it might be best in my situation. It seems they prescribe whatever they are familiar with. Also a transmission question. Would my partner get the condyloma exactly where my affected skin touched theres? or could it pop up anywhere on them once they have contracted it? Also does my sperm carry the hpv virus?
Avatar m tn I have had genital warts for over a year. I have been using Imiquimod cream for about 2 months now. Most or all of the warts have disappeared. Toward the end of the treatment, however, one area of my penis became very red and the middle part of the red area has started to scab (see included picture). It has been this way for about 2 weeks now. Is this redness and scabbing normal with Imiquimod use? Should I be putting some kind of antibiotic cream (neosporin, etc.) on this area?
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with gw and have been using imiquimod cream for exactly one month. I have a few questions so if you have been through this experience please help! 1. Is it normal for warts to spread when you begin treatment? Mine haven't spread drastically but it definitely seems that it is getting worse instead of better 2. How long does it take before you start seeing results? 3. How effective has this treatment been for you guys? Were there any bad side effects?
Avatar n tn I have been using Imiquimod cream for eight weeks and have a spot in my eyebrow.
Avatar m tn Hello, a patient that has been using imiquimod in his genitals, started to present with depigmentation in the same areas where he has been using imiquimod for flat warts. Apparently the warts have shown to reduce in size except for some little redish ones near his glans. What should i recomend for this patient, since a haven't been able to find any solution?... and shloud he use imiquimod??..
Avatar m tn I was prescribed this SUPER expensive cream (no insurance) called Imiquimod 5% cream, generic for Aldera, and I have been applying it for about a week and a half. I must admit that I have not been taking it exactly like I was told because there seemed to be a little wiggle room regarding application schedules. 3x a week, M/W/F or T/Th/S, the Dr. even said I could do it for 3 days in a row and be done for the week.
Avatar m tn Hello, I'm a male, 26yrs old. Can anyone describe their experiences with Imiquimod? I am on the 3.75% cream which my doctor has told me to use every other day for a month. In the first 2 weeks, nothing happened, only just a couple days ago I noticed a very slight indication that the medication might be working, but I'm still not sure. I have about 20-30 very small warts, and notice 2 or 3 of them showing a bit of redness and drying up a bit. Still not sure if this is due to the medication.
Avatar f tn   He said that since he wanted it frozen off he had to set an appointment. So they gave he the imiquimod cream to use in the mean time. His discharge papers say "discharge diagnosis: small skin tag(s) on penis (condylomata acuminata)." Why does it say skin tag and genital warts? I'm confused.  Which is it?
Avatar f tn I was using Zyclara (imiquimod) to treat a genital wart. 2 weeks later my scrotum became red and started burning. Eventually it formed a blister, with another scab like sore on my shaft, where the two touch. Concerned that it was herpes, I went to the planned parenthood. The doctor said she doesn't think its herpes and its a reaction from the Zyclara. She swabbed it just to be safe and sent it to get tested. Today they call me and say the lab couldn't get a result.
Avatar f tn I smoke marijuana daily and my girlfriend was prescribed imiquimod cream for molluscum contagiousum which I appear to have as well, I've done three treatments so far (three times a week) and I'm curious to the effects marijuana smoking may have on treating the molluscum. I know that imiquimod works by provoking an immune response in treated regions, and that marijuana does effect immune health. Is there any advice? Should I stop smoking during treatment?
Avatar n tn So I have genital warts obviously caused by HPV. I got the TARO brand Imiquimod cream to remove them. It seems to be working, but now where that portion of the shaft that is being treated makes contact with the scrotum, it's causing what seems to be jock Itch. Is this possible or just an unlucky coincidence?
Avatar m tn In animal models, imiquimod has been demonstrated to have potent antiviral and antitumor effects. We use the imiquimod as adjuvant to investigate the adjuvantal effect of imiquimod on transcutaneous immunization for subunit antigen, virus antigen and DNA vaccine.SLA: PP (weight fractions,0.7:0.3;total concentration of 0.5%(wt/vol)) dissolves in1:1 phosphate buffered saline(PBS):ethanol. This solution admixes with HBV subunitantigen, HAV antigen and HBsAg DNA vaccine distinctively.
Avatar f tn A couple of weeks ago i discovered warts on my genital area at the base of my penis and was diagnosed formally by my dr. I was prescribed imiquimod to be applied 3 days a week but heard apple cider vinegar does a great job of clearing warts. Is it a good idea to apply the imiquimod mon, wed, fri night and apple cider vinegar tues, thurs, saturday nights? Anyone tried this or have any results from either one they would share?

Avatar n tn Also, I have been treating myself for genital warts with Imiquimod for the past few weeks (This is a separate matter - I knew my ex had had warts in the past while I was with her). Is it possible that Imiquimod has caused this sore? Is it irrational to believe that this could be genital herpes, due to the length of time that has passed since I last had sex and the exclusivity of my prior relationship?
Avatar n tn Welcome to the forum. Imiquimod (Aldara) commonly causes irritation, including various combinations of redness, soreness, and sometimes overt ulceration of the treated tissues. In fact, that's how it works against warts -- causing inflammation in and around wart tissues. And herpes doesn't cause redness as it's only symptom. For confirmation, you should discuss this with the doctor or clinic that prescribed your imiquimod treatment.
