I too do not have prostate cancer but, was diagnosed with polycythemia vera and am taking Hydroxyurea as a long lifetime treatment. I also have a significant amount of hairloss. It has been studied on its own and in combination with other chemotherapy medications. It also has been studied in combination with herceptin for treatment of metastatic breast cancer.
The treatment is relatively well tolerated. The most serious side effect is neutropenia (decrease of white blood cells) that can leave one more susceptible to infection. Blood counts will be watched closely, and treatments may be held at times to allow for recovery of the blood count.
I have a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma) that I am on bromocriptin mesylate for and I have anxiety problems and panic attacks that I never had before.
