I have a shoulder problem and used to be on strong pain killers, but my doctor told me to change to heat rubs!

I have a lot of back / spine issues. I take some pretty heavy medication, but as far as OTC meds go, I find Liquid Gel Advil helps me the most. A couple of things to keep in mind: Ibuprofen can damage your kidneys and acetaminophen (Tylenol) can damage your liver. Prescription meds like hydrocodone have acetaminophen in them. Good luck.

I have been taking 4 7.5 mg hydrocodone for apprx. 1 year. This was prescribed for DJD in my right knee. I have been told I am too young for surgery. I have not been taking it as prescribed because it never worked. I take the entire 4 per day at one time about mid afternoon. This relieves my pain for about 8 hours. My doctor has told me that if I take them every 6 hours as prescribed before I experience pain they will work but this has not been the case.

Sometimes we have to piece together many things to get some pain relief. I use prescription gel, patches, ibuprofen, nortriptyline, & some narcotics.

Also wondering about the role of prescription meds. I've been on bupropion for a while now and I'm wondering if that may have any effect on my body chemistry. Anyone else on long-term medication?

You should be just fine unless you have an allergy to ibuprofen. Prescription Motrin is 800mg of Ibuprofen so that is the equivalent of four of the 200mg Ibuprofen. If you don't break out in a rash or have breathing difficulties after taking one or two Ibuprofen, please don't lose sleep over taking a third. As I said, as long as you can take Ibuprofen in the first place without having a problem, three won't bother you.

I know how bad it can be. I had a joint replacement in my left thumb but the implant failed and wound up having 9 surgeries, countless meds, procedures, etc. I don't know if you've tried glucosamine chondroiton. It can help rebuild cartilage if you haven't gone too far. It was too late for my hands but it may be helping other spots I have. What kind of doctor are you seeing? I get some relief from a prescription gel called Voltaren.

Hi all so far 3 months into treatment i was pretty much sailing through it but not by body is hurting my back my legs just everything i ran out of Acetaminophen and want to know if anyone here knows if i can take Ibuprofen for the aches i am undetectable at week 4 no liver damage if someone could help me out with this Thanks Much love Karen

I recently quit taking Vicodin for my joint pain because I was concerned about liver damage. I have been taking Ibuprofen instead. I've been taking two in the morning and then two in the afternoon. It says don't take longer than 10 days though. I have to take something though. My knees and wrists and fingers hurt too much if I don't. I know you guys aren't Drs but experience counts for something if its what your Dr has told you. What do you guys take?

been taking tylenol 2 to 3 times a day but not helping I have an appointment to see a chiropractor but I want to know if you all know what is safe for someone like me to take over the counter or prescription for pain on my shoulder blade and upper back. Hydrocodone only comes with either acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Tramadol is another medication that I use with my patients that is of equal effectiveness but does come without the other medications. However, some patients will experience nausea with tramadol. Good luck!

I just happened to read something the other day where someone said they were using an Ibuprofen 'cream' topically. But they said it's only sold in Germany... but that it could be ordered online (it's non-prescription). No idea how effective this really is - just passing it along.

I can't think of any OTC drugs that might help except for ibuprofen but I'm not sure if that would do the trick. Watch out taking ibuprofen especially if you have stomach issues (ulcers, heartburn, gerd) because it can cause stomach upset and bleeding if you have an ulcer. Ibuprofen helps with inflammation and pain. What have tried so far? I wouldn't try heat..it might make it worse. I can't believe they just want you to "make do and handle it"!

Ask for a script for prescription strength ibuprofen and maybe a script for Lidocaine Gel which you can rub on your gums/tooth to numb it. I had to have a root canal and 3 wisdom teeth pulled when I was on sub and told dentist straight up I did NOT want any pain meds, gave him the whole story, told him I was on sub-he still tried to push Tylenol 3 on me, but we agreed on the ibuprofen and lidocaine..

The top of my left shoulder is quite painful to the touch. I've tried ibuprofen tablets and gel, also paracetamol and codeine tablets. I've previously had some worries about chest pain being angina although all tests for this are negative. Hi, I ended up inserting some of an alcohol-based gel into my urethra 3 days ago. I have been using Azo for the pain, which is helping some, but I am surprised at how little the symptoms are abating. Could it be that this will take a while to heal? Could this have caused some kind of permanent damage?
