Hypoglycemia and the pancreas

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia and the pancreas

hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn Without insulin, these sugars build up in the bloodstream and the person becomes ill. In Hypoglycemia, the pancreas makes too MUCH insulin at times, and this overdose of insulin, if you will, causes the symptoms you describe. You will find that eating something that has some carbohydrates in it will make you feel better quicker than something that is low in carbohydrates when you feel this way. Many people exeperience this and there can be many causes.
Avatar f tn This can be due to overproduction of insulin, certain disorders of the adrenal glands and the pituitary gland, liver and kidney disease, and certain medications. The way to begin to treat your hypoglycemia is to work with your doctor to find the underlying cause. Treating the cause will help to treat the hypoglycemia. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn Is hypoglycemia the same as diabetes? What's the difference between type 1 and type2 diabetes? is it the age of the person that makes the difference between the two types?
Avatar n tn In situations of pre-diabetes, we often hear that people have bouts of hypoglycemia. This happens when the glucose levels start to rise too much and the person's body over-compensates by producing too much insulin. Many hypoglycemic folks eventually do end up being diabetic after the pancreas wears itself out and is no longer able to lower those glucose levels. Most doctors recommend a diet fairly low in carbohydrates to avoid stimulating the already over-active pancreas.
Avatar m tn First off, there are no doctors on this forum. This is patient to patient. Its difficult to answer any of your questions since you kept a lot of information to yourself a secret; 1.) When you test? B4 meals? After meals? 2.) Tests doctor performed? Glucose? Thyroid? Pancreas? 3.) Test[s] results? 4.) What have you looked into?
Avatar n tn We are told it has something to do with when he eats and the food sits in his stomach a hormone or something chemical stimulates the pancreas to shoot EXCESSIVE insulin. Our gastros can't figure it out and our endocrinologists can't either? We are in Miami, Florida. He is basically going into hypoglycemic comas and the glucagon does not work anymore. I am at my wits end. Someone out there please help....Thank you.
Avatar n tn Many people who deal with hypoglycemia find that they do best if they remove all caffeine from their diets, and all simple sugars, for both stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin, and in the case of hypoglycemia, produce TOO MUCH insulin. Many hypoglycemic folks find that they do best with diets that either go fairly low-carbohydrate or are made up of complex carbohydrates that digest slowly so as not to overly stimulate the pancreas.
Avatar n tn a couple of weeks ago, I went to have my blood sugar tested because I feared that I might have type 2 diabetes. The night before, I ate an apple and steak and the next day all I had to eat was a couple of crackers and water. The entire day I was urinating constantly and was extremely thirsty, but when they took my blood sugar I believe it was at 67.
Avatar n tn I have not found out if I have diabetes by a doctor but I get the shakes and lightheadedness all the time and some people say it could be diabetes. So Im wondering wheather or not I may have some form of diabetes or something else. I have tried to find out if I have diabetes by using a home kit to check and I didnt have diabetes. So I am wondering if home kits dont work as well as a blood test or not?
Avatar f tn Ordinarily, too much insulin would lead to a low (hypo), but with insulin resistence, the body cannot use the insulin that it has, and for various reasons the pancreas actually produces more insulin leading to an excess of insulin in the bloodstream.
Avatar n tn You may have a very rare tumor in the pancreas which produces glucagon and causes hypoglycemia. This is not a cardiac problem, and you should ask you physician to work you up for a glucagonoma.
Avatar n tn 2 days later i started having more blurry vision and would wake up in the middle of the night shaking uncontrollably and sweating. so bad that i went to the e.r. once. (but i ate durning this episode, so when i got to the er doc 6 hrs later i was fine) they ran ekg, blood tests, and i still had a slightly elevated white blood cell count. so they prescribed me levaquin. i write this because i was just woken out of my sleep from numb hands and tingling numb legs with drenching sweats.
Avatar n tn 8) you have reactive hypoglycemia. eat carbohydrates pancreas makes insulin but keeps producing insulin beyond what is needed thus driving BG down.
Avatar m tn ) Because, immediately after i take my ribose, my cognition and brain fog immediately vanishes, and I can concentrate and study with an immense improvement. What blood test should I request to evaluate my sugars etc, to rule out any pancreatic causes of this? thanks for your help!
2088051 tn?1334542007 To keep blood sugars stable you need to eat small meals frequently. these should consist of protein and fat (and a little bit of carb). AThe fat and the protein will help the food to be digested slowly and help keep sugars stable. Carbohydrates should be slowly digestible ones with fibre and fat included, ideally. Although you may feel like eating lots of carbs when you shake this may actually make things worse.
Avatar n tn Because her pancreas seems to be sputtering, it would be too dangerous to add extra insulin not knowing when she might become hypoglycemic, for it would make those hypoglycemic episodes life-threatening to add injected insulin to what her body is already producting. So all the endocrinologist can do is to wait and let the pancreas either wear itself out or settle down. I would highly recommend going very light on carbohydrates in her diet unless a hypoglycemic episode requires the carbs.
Avatar n tn ve read, *high* levels of insulin can be a problem because that can signal insulin resistance where the body resists the effects of insulin and stresses the pancreas to produce more & more. This is often present in overweight folks who are pre-diabetic or already have developed diabetes, as described here: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.
Avatar f tn ● Eat several small meals and snacks throughout the day, no more than three hours apart. ● Eat a well-balanced diet including lean and nonmeat sources of protein and high-fiber foods including whole grains, fruit and vegetables. ● If you eat meat, eat lean meats. Include in your nutrition plan fish and poultry. ● Avoid or limit sugary foods, especially on an empty stomach.
1055725 tn?1265869375 m just going to speak to the symptoms you are experiencing and the possibility of hypoglycemia or diabetes. Hypoglycemia is one of the symptoms of diabetes and just means low blood sugar. Some people however, have a diagnosis of just hypoglycemia, without the diabetes. That is very different. Your symptoms might relate to either one, or they might not. Some other symptoms of diabetes are increased hunger and thirst. Some people however are diabetic without experiencing any symptoms at all.
Avatar n tn t believe that it is related and are upset with her for questioning them as well as they are trying to lower the med doses and stop the thyroid meds. The symptoms went away with the high thyroid doses. Is it possible for Hashimotos to cause these symptoms or affect the pancrease?
Avatar m tn i get the same hypoglycemia reaction when i am going hypothyroid. that is the first symptom i get. shhortly after eating i feel like i have not eaten for a long time and i have physical hunger pangs. it is a symntom of hypothyroidism.
