I currently take humalog before meals and such.. The peak time is around 2 hours with a duration of like 6. So anyway I was wondering, When I go out with my friends and eat ice cream or something like, right now the sugar peaks way before my humalog, but what if I injected my humalog into muscle tissue, so it was absorbed rapidly. I think this would better match the peak of the sugar. Lets say im eating on an empty stomach so it is absorbed very fast.
7:30am (breakfast), 9:30 am, noon, 5:30 pm (dinner), 7:30 pm, and 9:30 pm. My concern is the apparent difference in effectiveness of the Humalog which he takes at 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. He measures his blood sugar two hours after taking the Humalog (@ 9:30 am and @ 7:30 pm). Over a seven week period his 9:30 am reading has averaged 214 and his 7:30 reading has averaged 113). His physical activity during the 2 hour periods after taking Humalog are about the same.
I am not a doctor and I can not say this will work for everyone but if you can test a few time to see how much you bs drops with 2 units of humalog you can gage yourself pretty well this way and just take the humalog after you eat instead of before you eat and test after eating to tell where you need to be.

I didn't see your msg until today and hope I can be of some help to you. I'm not a physician, but I have been a pumper for ~9 years and have had DM for ~35.
When I starated pumping, the only insulins available were "Regular" insulin and the main difference, as you know, is "how quickly" the insulin starts working, when it peaks and how long it lasts. Regular normally kicks in later than Novolog or Humalog will.
I would check with your doctor on how to adjust your insulin to avoid the highs and lows. For example, Humalog is supposed to peak in 2 hours. In my daughter it seems to peak in 3 hours.
Your doctor can advise you as to how the Lantus is affecting you, and how to adjust your food, and time you take the insulin. You might also want to ask about the insulin pump, Which does the same as the Lantus.
I am not a physician, but am a long-time type 1 diabetic who also takes Lantus and Humalog insulins and who has also done weight training at times in my life. I think you may be able to understand what is happening if you look at how your body immediately responds to both kinds of excercise and then look at what happens hours later after both kinds of exercise. In cardio exercise, you are working hard for a reasonably short period of time, burning LOTS of carbs and calories quickly.
I just started on Lantus and Humalog and my blood sugars seem to keep going up, I take 30 U at night Lantus and I take Humalog 10 before meals if my bs is 180 or higher, does this sound right, I was diagnosed a Type 2 about 6 years ago, but the Glipizide and Metformin I was taking has been stopped, but my fasting bs has been 270 or higher any suggestions I know control my diet I get that, I also weigh 239 my Dr's say to loose weight, and I am going to try.
Is this supposed to be our highest point, or should levels be settled after peak of Humalog at this point? I was thrilled with 2-hour logs of 80-90. She seemed to think these were low.

Sometimes he just was not hungry and other times he wanted to eat more at one time. If we had opted for lantus and then humalog to correct and to cover food, I would be running back and forth to school because he was not ready to give shots and we talked about the pump and watched a video about it and decided together.
My Novolog shots don't seem to work when I take it with food resulting in a lot of high blood sugars. When I take a shot to counter the high blood sugars the shot almost always works. My endocronologist doesn't know why and has never heard of this happening unless it is do to sloww digestion. I am 35 years old and have had type 1 for 20 years. What I don't get is that if my food hasn't digested wouldn't my blood sugars crash? Instead they peak!
If your husband is taking Lantus and Humalog or Novalog, he may want to talk to his endo about switching the time of the dose of Lantus. For people with night lows, taking the Lantus in the morning is the safest way to take this particular type of insulin, for it DOES have a slight peak action about 4 hours after injection, and for people taking it at night, the peak is while they sleep.
Typically, we would take our shot 30 minutes or so before our meal so that by the time our carbos started to be metabolized our Regular had also started working. The "tail" from Regular means that it works a few hours longer.
Typically, a unit of Novolog is "active" for about 5 hours, while a unit of Regular is active for closer to 8. Novolog has its peak much sooner than Regular also.
Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking.
I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500. I think the Lantus is not lasting 24 hours. If I try to split the dose, I'm wondering if I need to just take 5 and 6, or if I need to up the overall dose.
His behaviour became worse overnight and continued like this until just before Christmas when we made the decision to take him off the humalog again for good. It took 3 days this time for his behaviour to return to normality.
I mentioned these problems to his consultant who was very scathing and dismissive and told me the behaviour problems were due to his low blood sugar, even though he regularly has bad hypos on his normal insulin.
My son recently changed from NPH/R/H to Lantus and humalog pens. This is his fourth day on Lantus. He is doing fine but I am having problems trusting the Lantus - when his b/s drops below 100, I want to give him a can of apple juice, and of course that causes a moderate high. Also, he is not interested in stopping to eat as many snacks and meals because he does not have to 'feed' the NPH. Are these common problems in families starting on Lantus?
I started controlling my blood sugar using Regular insulin About 3 years ago, my doctor moved me to humalog. Using humalog was not easy. I looked at the study that was done and it never reacted as expected when I used it. It was taking 2 hours to start working and in by the third hour my glucose level would drop 200 to 250. It was also hard for me to sense when my blood sugar is low. That was very frustrating. After six month of roller coaster, my doctor put me on Novolog.
I know our readings are different in canada , 5 to 7 is normal.I have had sugars as high as 32 and used 10 units of humalog , half an hour later I am 34 , I don't understand this ? What is the ratio of humalog to carbs ? I had the flu and I know it can really mess up your sugars , but this was a month ago .Also , I generally feel better when my sugars are around 13 , anything below that and I feel the efects of hyperglycemea , I know that does,t make sense , but it is how I feel.
I know this is different for everyone - but generally, what is the ratio for the # of mg/dml units dropped by 1 unit of insulin. Like Humalog U100 R. Does anyone know? Lilly (the mfg. of Humalog) said that they didn't have those numbers (I didn't believe that). Just curious. I asked a Diabetes Trainers from my hospital and she didn't have an idea either.
Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
I have recently been switched to Lantus & Humalog and I have some questions. I take it in the morning. If I awake with an abnormal blood sugar (too high) I assume I would take a small dose of fast acting. Would I also take a small dose of fast acting if my blood sugar is normal, as to cover my breakfast? I know to count the carbs before the lunch meal and the dinner meal, but didn't ask about the breakfast meal.
