How does niaspan work

Common Questions and Answers about How does niaspan work

niaspan

Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar n tn He knows I eat healthy but that I have eliminated temporarily (for last 6 months) exercise due to scare associated possible lung cancer diagnosis (mentally I just do not want to work out - yet). He has recommended Niaspan (500). I can find zero information on the web about reducing CRP with any prescription drug. Do other doctors look to reduce CRP levels w/Niaspan - a drug designed to improve CHOL and Triglyceride levels?
7052683 tn?1392938795 I mean it is hard to eat out and not go off the diet. Regarding the Niaspan, the most recent study said that although the lab work looked ok the real difference in actually decline in heart attacks and so forth clinically didn't change. The lab work for the Triglycerides did make a difference though. Also, if you did go on this diet I noticed our LDL went down but our HDL also went down. The Family practice doc didn't understand why.
Avatar n tn I have searched the literature and have not found any articles linking Niaspan with any form of cancer. Niaspan is just niacin, one of the B vitamins, and as far as I can tell, is not cancerous in the dose given in Niaspan. As for your other question whether a five year study can demonstrate a drug-cancer connection, it would depend partly on the study design. The strength of the association between cause (the drug) and effect (cancer) would depend on how the evidence is gathered.
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar m tn You may want to try the Niacin (Niaspan is Niacin), it will definitely increase your HDL. I'm told that if you take it with aspirin it lessens the effect of the facial flushing. Also, a fatty liver is common in overweight individuals, the doctors I volunteer with have no issues prescribing cholesterol meds to individuals with fatty livers. It is very important, however, that you get your blood panel checked every 6 months or so to watch out for changes in your liver function.
Avatar n tn Is the crp a sensitive test that can be raised by a cold, injury, etc.?.....
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar m tn Lopressor 200 mg 2/day Plavix 2/day Lipitor 200 mg 1/day Niaspan 1500 mg Asprin 325 mg 2/day On one of them, they said I need to take it w/ applesauce! How weird is that? I think it was Niaspan - to prevent "flushing". What's flushing? Weak and tired but happy to be home. So how soon can one get back to swimming/running/biking? Which one first? Thanks y'all! I don't really talk that way!
Avatar m tn I have been taking 2000mg Niaspan daily for the last 18months, helping to raise it from 25 to 30. I run about 9miles a week, work out 3-4X at the gym each week, and drink a glass of red wine every night. I eat nuts every day, take Omega3, and rarely eat red meat - subscribing to a low cholesterol diet. Weight is 185 at 6'3", age 50. LDL is always pretty low - most recently 66.
Avatar n tn MRI, Carotid ultrasound, full field vision test, blood work, etc. All tests negative. No cataracts, no glaucoma, no retinal detachments, no macular degeneration, no migraines or any other symptoms. Have slight hypertension, take Cozaar. Niaspan (niacin) for cholestrol control (185). White male, 80 years old. 6' 3" 200 #. Disgustingly good health. Stumped by this. Me and the Docs.
212161 tn?1599427282 hi just got my blood work back my triglycerides are 480 my cardio dr wanted me to go on niaspan but it causes me to faint . does anyone know how to get them down. without meds i take liptor now but not helping and is 480 really bad .
475570 tn?1280941363 Here is the basis of what they found. They were able to produce additional HDL particles, however the new particles are smaller in size and do not have a protective property against CAD. The naturally occurring HDL in your body is better at doing it's job than the artificially produced HDL. The reason the trial was stopped was because they were not seeing any reduction in cardiac events between the Niacin control group and the placebo control group.
Avatar f tn I have been reading everyone skin problems and I guess I'm not alone. Mine started about 3 yrs ago and it's not getting any better. I have been to every doctor and had all kinds of blood work. They look at me like I'm crazy. My skin itches from inside, no signs on the outside. Under my breasts it feel like a burning almost like a sunburb would. My eyes always burn. No pill seems to help.My skin gets like little pricks let something is biting me. No I don't have bugs....
Avatar n tn Chris, about "fluid free" I'd meant: do you have some measure of that? A few weeks ago I'd taken one torsemide. I lost about 5 pounds in 5 hours, and maybe 10/10 off of BP. But by the next day, my BP was back to where it had started. I was eating very low salt in those succeeding says but still gained back all the water weight. A week later another torsemide, but I lost only half the water weight. I took niacin a little earlier tonight and dropped from 84 DBP to 78.
Avatar n tn I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar m tn Also I take allergy medication like zyrtec (1 a day). and 2000 mg of Niaspan. Does any of these have any effect on antibody test. I was a bit relaxed after I got my result but tensed once again after reading your post on cortisone injection, i read a similar one on thebody stating heavy does of cortisone can effect the antibody production. Does cortisone suppress the immune system which delays the production of antibodies? Please help, I am very scared.
Avatar n tn Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
Avatar m tn was placed on lisinopril 10mg, effient 10 mg, lipitor 40 mg, toporol 25mg, niaspan 1000, asprin 325mg. Starting 9/7/2010 went through 2 months of cardiac rehab cardiologist took me off lisinopril and did not replace it, at rehab I buildt up to 7.7 METS for 62 minutes a day, with avg heart rate at 130. 10/15/2010 Taken off effient and back on plavix due to severe bruising over 80% of my body, I looked like a blue berry.
