How does lamotrigine work

Common Questions and Answers about How does lamotrigine work

lamictal

Avatar m tn I had about 10 depressive episodes in 2-3 years and they stopped completely when I started lamotrigine (well, apart from the one, but it was work related). You probably already know lamotrigine (Lamictal) works better for the depression side more than the manic side.
Avatar f tn I think they're confused. If you read the full prescribing information, it's the PILL that screws with the lamotrigine, not the other way around. It's not like a lot of other anticonvulsants. From http://epilepsy.med.nyu.edu/treatment/medications/lamotrigine "Lamotrigine has no effect on other seizure medicines. And unlike some other seizure medicines, it does not reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.
5544493 tn?1369608788 ve tried Abilify at age 12, not supposed to use it under age 18; so it did not exactly work right. Seroquel? Abilify again? Lamotrigine? Carbamazepine? Others or generics of any of them?
505907 tn?1258369340 I have a boring med question for anyone in the know - my pdoc says that with lithium at this low dose (600) I wouldn't need to have my blood tested for many years. Someone knowledgable here said that was a crock. I don't see how I can arrange these tests on my own (and ignorant) without my pdoc agreeing I need them. What do you think?
1310468 tn?1274863925 I have been on lamotrigine for just over a year, my vivid dreams can be very scary. They have started in the last 6 weeks. My doctor says that I am most likely having episodes of delirium. I have had to get tests done to find out, still waiting for the results. I also may be having absence seizures, for me this has been very hard as I thought that for me I had finally found the right medication. But it may not be. So I guess everyone does reacts differently.
Avatar m tn How much were you taking and how long had you been taking it? There is a journal on tramadol with much information: go to MedHelp journals (bar at top of page) and look for "Tramadol and Ultram Recovery." It's amazing that doctors aren't more aware of the potential for addiction with tramadol.
Avatar m tn Hi again. Ok, I've been on prozac too.... I think that the lamotrigine is stronger as far as lethargy goes, I am on 200mg Lamotrigine at bedtime. I used to be on 400mg but doc said that 200mg would be effective.
Avatar f tn t know - it seems to me, but I am a layman, that just because one medication does not work, usually one tries another class. My doc tried me on scads of meds when one did not work, not said I was not sick...so I find it strange he blames you. I would talk to a pharmacist about weaning down and see the new doctor and hopefully he/she has new ideas. Shame on the wait but you should be medication free by then.
Avatar f tn Looking for people who can relate to my husband and have a similar story to tell? My husband has been on Lamotrigine for a while now. On 7/30/2019 the brand of his lamotrigine was changed by the pharmacy from Zydus to Unichem. I asked the pharmacy if this would cause an issue and they stated they were the same. However, 21 days after starting this new brand he had a grandmal seizure in our car. We are grateful he is alive and was not injured. In addition no one else was hurt or injured.
Avatar f tn Can anyone relate to my husband's story? My husband has been on Lamotrigine for a while now for seizures. However it can be used for bi-polar as well. Avatar f tn i agree that it's very odd for a doc to leave the med decision up to you. i don't have epilepsy (my son does); but i've been on both of these meds. i've been on the lamotrigine for depression (it didn't work) and i currently take the topamax to control migranes. yes, topamax is also called "topastupid" and "dopamax" because i swear i loose IQ points on a daily basis. LOL!! Good luck.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking Wellbutrin XL 300mg, Lamotrigine 25 mg, Zyrtec, Levothyroxine 75mg, and Atenolol 50mg. I started Lamotrigine (lamictal generic) 2 weeks ago. On day 9, I developed severe diarrhea and cramps. It was slowed down with 1 pill of Immodium, but after 2 days I decided to eat a "regular" meal and got diarrhea again. So it's been on an off for 6 days, and this morning it was worse than it was the first day!
1756969 tn?1332437163 It is unlikely that the symptoms are caused by lamotrigine as you are not on an effective dose yet. So, since the dose is low it can't stop the depression from coming on that is caused by your bipolar. Lamotrigine is not known for causing depression. The lowest dose usually seen as effective is 200mg. But, with this drug you have to increase it slowly. Give it more time and get up to a therapeutic dose. I take lamotrigine - 200mg -- and it has worked well for me with no side effects.
1806584 tn?1316208037 Hi, I'm bipolar I and have been on antipsychotics for little over a year now. Within a few weeks I'll be tapering off Abilify with the help of my pdoc. I'm happy about it, but I still wonder what your experiences have been with lamotrigine (Lamictal) as a monotherapy for bipolar I. I'd really hate to get manic again, but I also feel that Abilify is holding me back in my studies. Any tips and suggestions?
Avatar f tn I am hoping someone more knowledgeable will jump in soon! The only things I can tell you are that none of this will happen quickly and that it does take time to get to a therapeutic dose of lamotrigine (Lamictal). When I tried it, I got 6-week starter packs, then after that dosage increases continued to take time. And, on top of the time it takes to build up, it will also take time for it to work. It's unfortunate and none of us like it, but that is simply how many of these drugs work.
Avatar f tn Havent been in the sun. Ive been taking lamotrigine for about 2 weeks and I know its associated with some serious rashes. Went to GP when the rash wasnt this bad and she said its probably something viral and possibly the medication, talk to the person who prescribed the lamotrgine. Finally got a hold of prescribing nurse practioner who, over the phone, said to stop taking it and just take benedryl, it will be gone by this weekend. Benedryl is putting me to sleep but not doing anything.
Avatar m tn No point in whinnying, it is what it is. If this does not work I’m just going to stick with my Lamotrigine and call it a day. Thanks for the concern and support!
1756969 tn?1332437163 ve been taking Lamotrigine for over a year. It caused no changes in my weight or appetite. And I swear by the medication.
574118 tn?1305135284 I forgot to tell you it removed my depression right away, sunday beginning of work i worked like a devil corrected many mistakes, concentrated in my work and my boss gave me a bonus and was happy all day through. I started to think that God put me on the right track and my mind started to see things as they are. I met some old school mates in the afternoon. My father said perhaps i was exited. But i feel that 4mg lamictal is big for me. Can i cut it to 2mg only without difficulty.
Avatar f tn I'm 20 years old and have been diagnosed with epilepsy for two years now. When I was diagnosed I had a few Grand Mal seizures and was perscribed lamotragine. However I then stupidly didnt take them and was fit free for a year, then I had another seizure again grand mal. since then I have started taking the medicine given to me.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of antidepressant mania passing, just getting worse. Have you switched up your mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic. Because sometimes it takes the right combo before it works. I have only ever been on lamotrigine (can't take Lithium due to previous kidney issues). As an antipsychotic I tried Risperadol - worked great - made me lactate - deal breaker. Seroquel - zombie. Geodone - anorexic, tired.
Avatar f tn if you are going to come off the lamotrigine just make sure that you let the neuro know (no matter how much you dislike him, trust me i know what it's like to dislike your neuro but mine is one of the best in our country and my body is very difficult, he is the 3rd one i've been to, so i'm just gonna have to stick with him) sometimes coming off it can have very bad effects even if you do do it gradually.
Avatar f tn My understanding is lithium helps more with the mania than lamotrigine does. Lamotrigine is really good for bipolar depression. On a side note. It may be very odd to do so but buying your daughter something like a vibrator may keep her out of trouble. She can't control the hypersexuality urges and if she doesn't have an outlet that is safe she'll go to the unsafe ones. It may also be a good idea to take her to a planned parenthood advisor so they can teach her about safe sex.
899491 tn?1243773627 Read what it says on the prescription label as for a missed dose or call your doctor. If you took 100 mg. more it would be a serious matter. They can advise you how to proceed. If your doctor isn't available speak to your pharmacist.
