I have had a blood sugar test and gave a reading of 6.1 about 1 hour after a breakfast (Weetabix, Milk, Orange Juice). I have to go back and have repeat test but after having nothing to eat approx 9 hours beforehand....will this give an increased or decreased reading.

HI 48 year old male, 5 feet 8 inches. 164 lbs. Recently had blood test , Blood sugar came back 128m/dl. Doctor has not recommended any medicines . He suggested to exercise and control the diet. I have been monitoring my blood sugars at home since at a doctor visit my fasting glucose was 135. Every morning in the past week I have taken it (on empty stomach) it has been in the 130's, only one time it was 114. All throughout the day it is between 129 and 158, sometimes it is 192, 263. Hi recently my BP shooted to 140/90 during that course i was tested for CBC, Renal, Lipid and Sugar. All the counts of CBC, Renal and Lipid are absolutely normal. But my fasting blood sugar was 8.1 which is quite high. Before this test i used BP tablest for 4 days until the test is done. Later from the next day i was tested for Random blood sugar several times for 2 days always the readings are normal the highest shown is 5.2. My doctor not even commented on this.

This is NOT a fasting glucose. My dad is diabetic and he has all of the tools to test blood. He has regular diabetes not Type 2 but it usually skips a generation. Usually, fasting begins at midnight for a test the next day. Your sugar by the standards of your lab states it was high on your first test. The repeat is normal. I am not sure if that was a fluke. the night before my appt i wasnt allowed to eat past midnight. then when i got there they did a fasting draw to test my blood sugar after fasting, then they give you the "juice" its almost like pure sugar lol it made my baby do flips. its really a liquid glucose supplement, i had orange flavor, kind of tasted like orange soda, without the carbonation. then i had to wait an hour, do another blood draw, then i had to wait another hour to do another blood draw. it flew by fast.

ha1c test can give better idea of blood sugar than fasting or even random testing. see if they can test that.

I agree with troytroy that you need to meet with a doctor or diabetic educater to learn the basics of diabetes care. First of all being continually over 130 for fasting blood sugar is too high. Your wife needs to have her doctor evaluate her medication regimen and see if something needs to be changed. Also I'm guessing you don't know much about diet and exercise to help control Type II diabetes and this is very important to learn.

Regardless of the results of your glucose test, you should continue to keep an eye on your blood sugars during your pregnancy because you are at higher risk of developing gestational diabetes given your history. You will stil need to gain adequate weight to nourish your baby, but you should aim for about 25-30 pounds during the pregnancy and not too much over that, so that you can limit your chances of having abnormal glucoses during the pregnancy. I recently had a blood test, which included a glucose test. I wasn't fasting. I ate a bowl of whole grain cereal at about 5AM. My test was a 10AM. My uncle has diabetes and my sister is hypoglycemic. I know I get sick if I have a shake from McDonalds, but that's about it. I get really tired and nauseated. I don't drink sugary beverages at all just because I am always watching my weight, but I wonder now how that would effect me?

If you are having the one hour glucose test the normal after the drink is 140 and under The 3 hour test should be 180 and under after the 3 hours and if you want to know what your everyday fasting blood sugar level is 90 and under.

I think being it was fasting. (They have me test early b/c my Mom had Gest. Diabetes)......The blood test is generally more accurate than a regular glucometer.....I'm an RN and sometimes we play around and check our own on the hospital units and get different readings every time...one right after another,......

I am sure the doctor will get back to you, but you really have to make sure and show this to your child's doctor. I have learned that the blood sugars he is having are not normal and he needs to be seen tomorrow. He needs the follow up testing asap and needs an A1C test.
