Common Questions and Answers about Glucosamine your joints

glucosamine

Avatar f tn Your mom will need to take 150mg glucosamine for the rest of her life if she has osteoarthritis. It keeps the joints and their connective tissues lubricated, as they dry up as we age. Some people respond quickly, and others feel no effect at all. There are also exercises that help. The main thing is not to let the joints seize up. Keep active.
1110049 tn?1409402144 Glucosamine is commonly taken in combination with chondroitin, a glycosaminoglycan derived from articular cartilage. Use of complementary therapies, including glucosamine, is common in patients with osteoarthritis, and may allow for reduced doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
Avatar m tn My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight. So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose. As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement. You could mention this to your vet perhaps.
1093971 tn?1257833640 The consensus, however, is CAUTION and only take glucosamine under the supervision of your doctor, especially if you have diabetes. And be sure to talk with your local pharmacist about potential drug interactions with other medications. Some reports have taking glucosamine to relieve arthritis may cause a rise in blood sugar levels. They reasoned glucosamine is ten times as powerful as regular glucose thus causing insulin resistance.
Avatar n tn You should also ask your vet about proper dosages of over-the-counter glucosamine, chondroiting and/or MSM. You can find these supplements already mixed together at your pet store, but it tends to be a lot cheaper to buy them at a human pharmacy. These supplements are a very effective preventive at keeping your dog's joints in good shape for a longer period of time than if you didn't use them, and will hopefully keep a possible hip surgery from being necessary.
Avatar m tn glucosamine, with vitamin c as the two work best together, and hyaluronic acid. some do get better results from chondroitin but it is not necessary, or shark cartilage. fish/flax oil will lube 'em up for you also. froobar, C.N.
Avatar n tn what else can i take to reduces pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints. when meloxicam is not working.I have been tested i don't have Arthritis .
Avatar f tn I also buy the Pedigree dog food which has one where it has glucosamine in it for healthy joints. Ofcourse ask your vet if Glucosamine would be ok for your dog to take because I don't know if hip arthritis and hip dysplasia is the same thing. I hope and pray your baby gets better.
Avatar n tn It is very common for dogs 13 years or so to have degenerative joint disease (arthritis). The parts are just wearing out. The problem can occur anywhere there are joints in the body, which include her spine, hips, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and even in her tail. Lyme disease can contribute to joint pain and should be checked often and treated if necessary.
163305 tn?1333668571 I've had a lot of soreness in my hip joints and deep muscles. My friend swears by glucosamine. I left a message for my nurse but wondered if anyone is taking it for dealing with the sxs of tx, namely, aches and pains? Thanks.
Avatar n tn t tried it myself yet, only because I HATE taking pills, but have heard a few success stories about Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Another thing you can do is start physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles and tendons around the joints helps to slow the degenerative changes.
Avatar n tn Also you said you were advised to triple your usual dose of Glucosamine, so what do you take now? I am currently taking 1500mg of Glucosamine Sulphate and it doesn't seem to be holding back the progression of my arthritis to other joints. I hope you get rid of your tummy infection and get back to normal soon.
1295500 tn?1272459927 Hi, my questions is I have a 9 year old collie, Sheppard, husky mix dog she's probably about 90 lbs now. She seems to be having a lot of problem with her back legs. Some days she seems fine and other days she can barely get up off the floor and when she does her back legs shake. Right now what's happening is she is holding one of her legs up and walking on three legs.
Avatar f tn Do you take any supplements such at Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM? They work great for me. As long as I take them every single day. My bones/joints would get so back I could barely walk, and I could tell if it was going to rain anytime soon because they would hurt even more! The Glucosamine really helped! Also a good calcium supplement. If these thinks don't help over a few week period I'd talk to your Primary Dr. about other possibilities. Good luck, I hope this helped!
Avatar n tn i eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, exercise plenty, drink plenty of water and take multi-vitamins, glucosamine and cod liver oil daily. i am 25 years old and am not a vegetarian or vegan. what is likely to be the cause of this problem?
Avatar f tn Hello. First I'd like to let you know how glad I am that you have found this Forum. :) I want to be sure you know that we are all CPP (Chronic Pain Patients) and there are no Doctors on this Forum. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this pain in your knuckles. I know from personal experience just how painful, not to mention annoying this is in just trying to do your normal day to day routine. Now mine is from Osteoarthritis.
Avatar m tn When nails are too long it can affect the whole gait, and yes, put strain on joints and ligaments. The best thing to do is not to ever let the nails get too long in future. The strain should ease up in a few days, and in the meantime, don't put him through any particularly strenuous, or athletic movements. Just gentle exercise, like walking. No agility, or leaping around if it can possibly be avoided. Then things SHOULD heal naturally, and get back to balance.
1110049 tn?1409402144 Thank you very much for your reply. I shall continue to take my Glucosamine with Chondroitrin. I do have MSM as well, but rarely take it. I have tried apple cider vinegar, but could not stand the taste!! I have not heard of Botwelloia Serrata. I will look into that. Taking Ibuprofen caused internal bleeding, so I keep away from that. I would rather take complementary medicine. I have read about devils claw, do you know if that has good results?
Avatar f tn Lyme messes with your joints, often knees, sometimes hips, ankles etc. Swelling, arthritis-like symptoms. You don't want to do permanent damage to your joints, I'm sure, so take it easy on the running and yoga or swim or something else that is gentle on the joints till you're up and ... running again!
Avatar f tn The best thing you can do for her right now is get her weight down. The less weight she has for those joints the better. I obviously don't know why exercise has been impossible in the past, but don't know your situation. Also, if she is in pain already, and the vet avised to keep her still, then exercise is not advisable for now. But ideally, and if the bad pain has eased, then gentle regular walks would help. Or even walks around your house would be better than nothing.
441382 tn?1452810569 I had the same question a while back, in the Spring. Misty had been showing a bit of possible arthritis in her right hind leg which was broken once. I asked the vet about this because I didn't want to pay premium prices for a "pet brand" Glucosamine, and he said Glucosamine is exactly the same substance, whether it's formulated in a preparation for dogs, or people. And Chondroitin is the same. I believe they are both natural substances obtained from shellfish.
Avatar f tn Hi megmeg74, You said your senior cat is having trouble tolerating senior dried food. Perhaps the senior dried food you are giving her comes in cans. Wet food is actually better for older cats and easier for them to digest and eat. As for giving your kitty something to help her stiff joints, I am going to leave this for another Medhelp member on the cat forum to comment on. There probably is something, but I don't know what it is. I wish you both well.
Avatar m tn Would a like to try Glucosamine & Chondroitin for my mild hip arthritis. Anyone have good results? Dr prescribed Meloxicam 15mg but am hesitant to start taking it.
