Glucosamine isn't actually a pain medication - it's a "cartilage protector." It's great that you have your dog on this, but it won't actually help with the pain. It's used to chronically long term help with reducing osteoarthritis and protecting cartilage.
Instead, I'd talk to your vet about getting your dog on a veterinary prescribed NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory). You SHOULD not give him anything OTC - these can be very toxic to your dog.
It would do no harm at all to start him right away on Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements. You do not have to buy the veterinary ones as they are much more expensive. I asked my vet about this, and he said the veterinary one contains exactly the same substance as the ones for humans. So now I buy human ones for my dog. She weighs 28lbs, and her dosage is 1 capsule per day (which is 500mg Glucosamine, and 200mg Chondroitin. So you could work out the dose for your dog's weight...

There are several good veterinary glucosamine and chondroitin supplements on the market, and if you give them to her every day, they will make a difference. It takes about a month to see any real difference, but it will help in the long run.
Your vet is going to have to determine whether or not the incontinence is being caused by nerve damage from hip problems.

My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight.
So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose.
As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement.
You could mention this to your vet perhaps.
My dog is 12 year old and has arthrits and the vet told me to use glucosamine. In the summer time he does not need it. Now my dog is whimpering and shakeing, when I pet him he stops. This started a couple of days ago. The weather got really cold fast and I just started him back on glucosamine. Does this sound like the arthrits acting up or do I need to worry? I have always fed them a really good food with the added glucosamine. I just recently changed foods to one without glucosamine. My lab started limping really bad. I went to human vitamin store and got her some glucosamine supplements. I got the liquid flavored glucosamine and the glucosamine soft flavored chew. I know some cannot swallow pills. My dog eats the chews if I slightly warm them. She will not touch the liquid. I would rather put a pill in some meat or something.

Hi,does anyone know what dose of glucosamine & chondroitin i should give my 7yr old border collie,he is getting very stiff in his hind leg when getting up(old injury when he was 1yr old) but once he gets going he is still as fit & active as ever.
