You can safely give your dog 600mg od glucosamine a day. I found this info from a reliable website.
Hi,does anyone know what dose of glucosamine & chondroitin i should give my 7yr old border collie,he is getting very stiff in his hind leg when getting up(old injury when he was 1yr old) but once he gets going he is still as fit & active as ever.
My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight.
So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose.
As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement.
You could mention this to your vet perhaps.

m taking Ameriden Olive Leaf Extract - 6 caps a day, I was instructed to take only this brand. Plus Glucosamine 1500mg 3 X a day and hyaluronic acid (cushions joint) 100mg 3X a day. I was wondering whether he needed the glucosamine/chondroitin combination because he had no digestive issues when he took Myristin -- which is a CMO(cetyl myristoleate) +glucosamine -- but the only thing is that the glucosamine dosage is much lower, the loading amount only provides 600 mg a day. Can I perhaps supplement it with additional glucosamine (no chondroitin)? Maybe the chondroitin is upsetting his stomach.
The phd who I went to told me to take Olive Leaf Extract and triple the usual dose of glucosamine. After about 6 weeks of this I felt a huge difference and it made me very hopeful. When nails are too long it can affect the whole gait, and yes, put strain on joints and ligaments. The best thing to do is not to ever let the nails get too long in future. The strain should ease up in a few days, and in the meantime, don't put him through any particularly strenuous, or athletic movements. Just gentle exercise, like walking. No agility, or leaping around if it can possibly be avoided. Then things SHOULD heal naturally, and get back to balance.
I would certainly give him a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement. I give my dog 500mg Glucosamine plus 200mg Chondroitin, and she weighs 28lbs. She had a broken legf years ago, and very occasionally got a twinge and a slight limp. Since starting the Glucosamine....within a few days!! she did not show any discomfort at all, and has not shown signs of twinges yet.
Apparently it works better alongside vitamin C.
Oh I am so sorry, both that you lost your well-loved Terrier, and that your Dalmation has taken it so badly. Grief and missing a loved companion is natural in dogs, but I can understand why you are worried, when it has this effect.
Yes, depression can cause physical decline, but even an old dog who has got sad and down, that she feels her age, and has aches and pains, can maybe be cheered up.
I don't really know about how wise it would be to get another dog in.
I have always fed them a really good food with the added glucosamine. I just recently changed foods to one without glucosamine. My lab started limping really bad. I went to human vitamin store and got her some glucosamine supplements. I got the liquid flavored glucosamine and the glucosamine soft flavored chew. I know some cannot swallow pills. My dog eats the chews if I slightly warm them. She will not touch the liquid. I would rather put a pill in some meat or something.
Their cost out to be readily manageable and btw, you can halve the dosage (take twice a day half the amount) after six weeks (that point was part of the study and I found it worked well in practice for me). [eg. Locally, my cost for them would have been $0.20/day during the initial six weeks, and is now $0.10/day.
