Fosamax side effects osteonecrosis of the jaw

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax side effects osteonecrosis of the jaw

fosamax

Avatar n tn There are reports that link people taking IV fosamx to osteonecrosis of the bone having oral and maxilofacial surgery. Treatment really depends upon degree of severity. Most of the time patients are advised hyperbaric chambers.
Avatar m tn In 2011, the agency voiced concerns that taking the drugs long-term may actually make bones weaker and increase the risk of rare but serious side effects such as atypical fractures of the thigh bone, esophageal cancer and osteonecrosis of the jaw, a rare but painful condition in which the jaw bone crumbles. To investigate, the FDA reviewed data from women who had taken the drugs for six to 10 years.
Avatar f tn There definitely is a connection between bisphosphonates like Fosamax and osteonecrosis of the jaws. This has been well established and documented in medical and dental journals. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the type of doctor that most commonly diagnoses and treats this condition.
Avatar n tn The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw. A disease you do not want to get. The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them. Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
Avatar m tn If she has ever taken Boniva, she should worry. Google Osteonecrosis of the jaw, many drugs like Fosomax have bad side effects. A friend lost several teeth and parts of her jaw due to this. She eventually had to have cadaver bone to replace the bone she lost, then implants. She should take other types of calcium supplements.
Avatar n tn What did your prescribing doctor say about the side effects caused by the Fosamax and how to deal with it? I understand your feelings about how the facial pain affects your quality of life. Because it's something people can't see -- it's sometimes hard for our families/friends to understand. It took me a long while to get my husband to understand what I was dealing with, with symptomatic TN.
Avatar f tn I know that the liver processes all drugs and reading the side effects is scaring me. I have stage 2 fibrosis and failed the traditional interferon/ribavirin treatment already.
Avatar n tn Good morning, I saw my Dr. this morning and he would like to start taking fosamax, after reading all the side effects i'm not sure i should.
Avatar n tn dental work - there are blackbox warnings about osteonecrosis of the jaw (bone death) The mother of a woman that I worked with took Fosamax for a few months and her teeth began to loosen - an oral surgeon had to pull teeth from a quadrant of her mouth and add some sort of bone replacement. The oral surgeon who did my root canal 2 years ago told me (reluctantly) agreed that the bone drugs are becoming controversial.
Avatar f tn I would search for any lawsuits against the manufacturer of Fosamax for injury like this resulting on facial bone loss and tooth loss. Seems to be me they should pay for any corrective dental or medical treatment and pay compensation for pain and suffering. I've read negative things about this drug and it's ironic that it is advertised as preventing bone loss, and yet it accelerates it.
Avatar n tn No I am not, I am only on tapazole, don't have a problem with bones yet, I am going to have surgery on feb 6
Avatar m tn The core decompression they usually just drill little holes directly into the side of the joint affected to allow blood to flow around the joint and dead bone and marrow, thus allowing new growth, since mine was so different and my whole leg, they literally hollowed out my right femur and tibia bones, my cartilage was 100% not a thing wrong with it ODD the #1 knee surgeon in Chicago thought.
Avatar m tn Thanks for the comment. Ordinarily, I would say you are right to follow doctor recommendation first. However, I have read about some very nasty side affects associated with Fosamax and am quite concerned about taking it. Do not have bad osteoarthritis, just trying to keep bones strong. I read about Osteo K in a very reputable magazine (Bottom Line) in May 09. They were very positive about it.
Avatar f tn why not weight-lifting, good diet, etc instead of the potential for jaw osteonecrosis, fractures of the femur, etc? And why the bias against Q10? If the medical profession has never heard of the electron chain, then it's time to go back to school and learn something.
Avatar f tn arimidex or femara, has this common side effect of diminishing bone mineral density that may cause your pain. I believe that femara may cause the same symptoms. A plausible brilliant solution is to take these drugs together with bone protective agents such as fosamax, though the effect of pain lowering may not be immediate.
Avatar n tn My husband developed squamous cell carcinoma 5 years ago. After 8 weeks of intensive radiation treatments, along with chemo, his behavior also changed. He doesn't remember things!! He also lost the use of his arms, his shoulder fell out of it's socket, he can not speak and can only eat thru a feeding tube. In the summer of 2009, after two years on home hospice, his tumors disappeared!!
Avatar f tn I needed to be pre-medicated with benadryl and prednisone due to a reaction i had shortly after my first taxitier treatment. Does my body reacting adversely to the chemo in the first place cause more severe side effects? I'm curious to know because i have had lumbar pain and knee pain ever since my chemotherapy.
Avatar m tn I worry about 2 things right now-- what if the bone tumor is something else and not fibrous dysplasia, and the bisphosphonates make it worse by causing a more heavy calcification? What about the side effects of such a drug on someone who is only 31 yrs old?
Avatar n tn The two being eye teeth (upper left and right). So far, as of this date, I have not had a reply. I would like to know if the Fosamax has any bearing on why my teeth are getting loose.
Avatar n tn when I speak to my patients and explain the interconnectivity of the mouth and specifically the lower jaw to the Cervical (neck) spine and the more they ususally have a blank look on their face. The simple answer is that it could be both ways, meaning yes your scoliosis could have effected your jaw position and/or the other way, the jaw position could have caused your scoliosis.. How to treat it.. stay away from surgery. Find yourself a good Chiropractor, and a Neuromuscular dentist.
Avatar f tn I had not personally heard of the the fractures (femur) from the Fosamax, but I did hear of the other risk factors for some of the older drugs. I had heard also of the side effects like hot flashes and sweats which are none too pleasant. My doctor usually advises me that the benefits often outweigh the risks. After hearing about the cancer risks and stroke incidents, I was not too sure. I became pregnant when I was 35 and therefore could not take any drugs.
Avatar f tn com/arthritis/avascular-necrosis-osteonecrosis-symptoms-treatments#2. And here is an overview of the type of surgery that she had https://nyulangone.org/conditions/osteonecrosis/treatments/joint-preserving-surgery-for-osteonecrosis. I do hope it wasn't useless to have the surgery but I would question that doctor about what is next if they feel that way. There are other treatment options. And it's very important to find the core cause of why it is happening to begin with.
Avatar n tn The other day I had a new symptom that was a sore throat pain in underneath of jaw and behind my ear. Anyway, someone told me the headache was a side effect of gabbapentin but the headache has always been present even before I started medication. The headache is constant and unrelenting. I have had MRI and cat scan and they were normal. Dr thinks my TN came from mastoiditis that I had. I also had a fall where I fell and hit the right side of head. Any insights on headache and tn in general.
