Fosamax for osteoporosis

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax for osteoporosis

fosamax

Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar m tn If you have osteoporosis, I think it is best to take the medication prescribed by your doctor. Supplements and herbal remedies are not approved by the FDA. I have not seen any studies to indicate that this is an effective alternative. While this may be beneficial, I would think the treatment plan would be the one your doctor prescribes.
7469840 tn?1409845836 I just googled ribavirin and osteoporosis, and there does seem to some connection, so will try to print out some articles for new doc, and will take all my hcv tx info with me too.
Avatar f tn //philaholisticclinic.com/natural-treatment-for-osteoporosis/ Because supplmenting with anything can impact you, we do recommend you consult with someone. Even a nutritionist. Calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium are important for bone health. Recommendations of what amount to take would be best with someone that knows your medical history. Even a nutritionist could be of benefit to you. Are you doing weight bearing exercise by the way? This video is helpful. https://health.clevelandclinic.
Avatar f tn I have been on Fosamax for almost a year . In the last few months I have developed really bad heartburn. Zantac helps for a few hours but then it starts again.
Avatar n tn t deal specifically with osteoporosis but as far as I know, there is no jaw bone loss associated with fosamax usage. There is some concern about possible delayed healing or risk of infection after removing teeth with patients using fosamax though.
Avatar n tn are you still not taking any prescription drug for your osteoporosis? Am interested to know what/why your doctor is recommending for your treatment now... I'm 62 Fem. with T score -3.5. My doctor is putting me on Actonel but I am reluctant to start. Side effects are very worrisome... not sure what to do. I have started mega doses of supplements and calcium and D and excercise and I want someone to tell me that that has worked for them.
Avatar m tn My wifes orthodontist recommended a consultation with a periodontist prior to him starting the procedure for braces. My wife is a 65 year old in good health who has taken FOSAMAX for 5 1/2 years. She wants to get her teeth straightened. The periodontist has recommended a procedure to reinforce the gums prior to the braces. This has added an additional 6K to the price and about 3 months to the total time to straighten the teeth.
Avatar f tn I was dx with osteopenia a month before I started treatment for C and began taking fosamax weekly - the low dose 35 mg per week. Before tx for C my hip T score was -1.7. After treatment my T score was -1.3, so it did improve. The lumbar spine T score imporved during that time too. I continued to take the fosamax thoughout my tx and did not clear the virus, so would surmise the improvement was from the fosamax and not anything else.
Avatar m tn Anyone hear the All Things Considered piece on how Fosamax became a bestseller for bone density? A great story, and a cautionary tale of our current pharmaceutical industry and their voracious hunger to sell meds.
Avatar f tn I would search for any lawsuits against the manufacturer of Fosamax for injury like this resulting on facial bone loss and tooth loss. Seems to be me they should pay for any corrective dental or medical treatment and pay compensation for pain and suffering. I've read negative things about this drug and it's ironic that it is advertised as preventing bone loss, and yet it accelerates it.
Avatar n tn Ijust had an ext and bone graft and it was recommended for me to also stop my osteoporosis meds as they do affect healing. I didn't aske for details, both my DS and MD agreed.
Avatar f tn I just went got into menopause. My FSH is at the high end, no periods for over a year etc. I had a bone density done and my spine and hips have low end osteoporosis. I was wondering how many of you out there at my age or near my age have it too? I had osteopenia of the spine 4 years ago and now it is osteoporosis. The hip has gotten worse on one side by 3% and the other side by 6 %.
Avatar n tn Other hip and spine are in the yellow zone for osteopenia. I am allergic to Bonita and Fosamax so for now trying exercise, calcium, vitamin D to combat it. My mom has it and I've been menopausal for 10 years now at the age of 43. I don't take magnesium. Should I be and what would be a good starting dose?
248382 tn?1274938634 I am on HCV t x pegasys & riba. I also have osteoporosis. my endroconolgist has recommended 1 x year 15 minute infusion treatment for osteo.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia. I took the stuff for about 6 years, and each of my bone density test results were a little worse than the previous one. Recently I learned that many women who took this medication for as long as I did got femur fractures as a result. When a doctor on ABC national news suggested that women stop taking it after 5 years, I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss stopping this med. My doctor agreed, but now suggests that I take Evista.
Avatar n tn I have had osteopenia for many years; I have been able to rebuild my bone density by taking calcium and magnesium, but if you've already been diagnosed with osteoporosis, you might need to go on a med specifically for that. What is your current thyroid status?
Avatar f tn I would, however, suspect the Fosamax. Can you try a different medication for osteoporosis? I rebuilt my bone by supplementing with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. High cholesterol is often caused by hypothyroidism, and once thyroid levels are normalized (for you), cholesterol levels often come down.
Avatar f tn Many thanks for your response and advice. I have been on both drugs together - Arimidex for 4 yrs, Fosamax for 3 yrs. I stopped the Arimidex 4 wks ago but have continued with weekly Fosamax. The bone pain in my hip and foot has diminished considerably, although I still have shooting pains in both thumbs and 1st 2 fingers. I am a little confused as to your advice......when you say "a possible brilliant solution is to take these drugs together WITH bone protective agents...
Avatar f tn My mom is 71 years old and has lost 2-1/2 inches in height. For about the past year she experiences discomfort in her right side when sitting down. She's been to her doctor and had x-rays and ultrasounds, both of which have come back negative. Her doctor seems to think that because she has shrunk by 2-1/2 inches, the problem is that her bones are compressing, and when she is sitting her ribs are bowing out and causing the discomfort due to the compression.
Avatar n tn I also have osteoporosis with the degenerative joint desease. I take fosamax 70 mg weekly. I have been on the fosamax for 2 1/2 years with no side effects. Two weeks ago I developed pneumonia and was given levaquin, prednasone, and an albuterol inhaler for use three to four times daily. I think I remember some warning from the doctor that gabapen may cause joint pain. Thank you for your e-mail.
Avatar m tn I started having pain in the tail bone lower back area and it started buring, for two weeks i couldnt get out o bed, it was like all the energy was draining out out my back. I subsequently went for testing for STD and infetions and it came negative. The pain continued to increas ein the lower back and in my groin area. An xray was done which showed my bones were thin and I was diagnosed has having osteoporosis!
10947 tn?1281404252 I am 61 and taking calcium and fosamax for osteoporosis so wonder if that is producing too much clacium?? Or am I just imagining this?
570405 tn?1216957944 My wife is dying of a super strep infection with lymphedema cellulitis in her legs while on high power antibiotics and gamma blood infusions for 5 years. She has advanced osteoporosis at age 55, diabetic, steroid dependant, multiple vertabrae compression fractures-one with a bone chip in the spinal canal (she's already on fosamax). She is on 150mg of time-released morphine a day, and ora-morph and oxycodone for pain spikes and breakthrough pain.

Because my TSH is always messed up docs keeping reducing levothyroxine dramatically, 2 years ago I was in a coma due to hypothyroidism and UTI which went to brain.
