Common Questions and Answers about Forteo osteoporosis drug

forteo

Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
Avatar f tn Forteo is injected daily. The first few doses may cause dizziness and/or fast heartbeat. The most common long lasting side effects are dizziness and leg cramps. Forteo increases bone mass and strengthens.
Avatar f tn I am a breast cancer patient in a drug study taking the osteoporosis drug, Zometa. There is some promising data that suggests osteoporosis drugs may help prevent breast cancer patients having recurrances of cancer as bone cancer.
Avatar f tn I have severe osteoporosis and am trying to take Forteo. I started out with half dose and have worked up to a full dose. The full dose 2 days in a row was disabling. My doctor suggested every other day. So I let the previous trial work its way out of my system for 5 days and tried another full dose. This is three days after the dose and I am weaker each day. I move in slow motion. My doctor is puzzled. Anyone had a similar experience?
Nicelady I just had my frist Bone scan and the office called me and said I had osteoporosis and that they called in RX for Atelvia.. I picked up the RX and was reading the information and I am concerned about the side effect of this medication. Is this the only way to help with osteoporosis? Is there anything elso another way?
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar f tn I have been on Forteo daily injections for 1 year and I have experienced considerable joint pains which did not exist prior to treatment. My left hip and knee, my right knee and my hands have been getting worse each month. Has anyone else experienced similar reactions?
Avatar n tn m 40 years old and have a history of Osteoporosis/Osteopenia, and I had a total hysterectomy at the age of 28 for endometreosis. I do not/have not ever taken estrogen replacement. I did have Aredia/Forteo injections for the treatment of the osteoporosis. The lump/mass is my breast was found to be "prominent glandular" tissue....no sign of mass/calcification...the "lump" under my arm and in my right groin come and go.
Avatar n tn I am a 59 year old female. The reading on my bone density test is minus 4.1 for my spine and minus 2.6 for my legs and hip. However, my doctor isn't prescribing any medication for me but tells me to continue taking calcium supplement and Vitamin D and come back in a year to do another test. Since I am obviously having osteoporosis, shouldn't I be taking any prescription drug? I am worried sick over the reading and need some expert opinion to go back and talk to my doctor again.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your feedback. My case has baffled most doctors. I drink alot of water, eat a healthy diet and don't smoke or drink. The only meds I take are for my bones (Forteo) as I found out that I had extreme osteoporosis in Nov. 2008. I have had my circualtion checked several times and it is reduced in my "weaker" foot. There is no blockages and I have no rare diseases.... My problem is only becoming worse and noone knows why....
908504 tn?1269103899 He also wanted me to try the injections of Forteo but my Aunt had bone cancer in her hips so I am somewhat leary of that drug. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I am in really bad pain.
Avatar f tn However, you may also want to ask your oncologist about taking an osteoporosis drug. I am currently in a phase 3 drug study which is checking the protective effects of osteoporosis drugs to help keep breast cancer from recurring as bone cancer. Early results seem to be very promising. At the very least, taking an osteoporosis drug will treat your osteoporosis. If there is an added benefit - even better! Thinking of you.
Avatar f tn For almost 2 years, I have been, and continue to be, treated for Fibro, Osteoarthritis, Senile Osteoporosis (daily injection of Forteo), high blood pressure and low/none vitamin D, and periods of low white cells. Was checked for the usual, RA, Lupus etc. Nothing showed up. Previous health-worked fulltime around 50 hours a week or more, constantly going and doing, did many family dinners, active runner, won divisional 5k first place and masters and weight trained. BMI is around 20.
Avatar f tn Hi-- When you say Medicare, I assume it is Medicare Part D, administered by an insurance company like Blue Cross, etc? If so, you might be in for sticker shock. I had a similar experience w/ Forteo, via Part D, they wanted $5K for 3 months. I went directly to Lilly, and qualified for pro bono meds for 2 years, the limit of tx on Forteo. My understanding is patients with cirrhosis get priority. Other Gilead experienced persons, and there are a few here, can tell you more.
Avatar f tn ve read this a very well tolerated drug. My prospective spine surgeon insisted on Forteo, and this guy is the head of adult scoliosis surgery @ Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. That is saying something, they are even setting up an endowmen in his name. Please, gather up your financial info, and give the Lilly people a call. You might be surprised what they can do for you. I would urge you to get this treated, the sooner the better.
Avatar f tn Gosh, Elaine, I need to take calcium, about1500 units a day, because I have osteopenia (bone thinning but not bad enough to be osteoporosis). I was on Boniva for several years, but recently switched to Reclast infusions. I've been doing well without significant further bone loss. This kind of thing runs in my family so I don't want to mess around with it.
233759 tn?1210476796 ) I heard a pharmasist say that the drug companies are going to stop making Armour...he said he can no longer get the generic version because the drug companies stopped making it & he believes the brand name Armour is going to be stopped too. I do know that I can no longer buy the generic equivulant anywhere. Have you heard anything about this? 2.) I feel really stupid for asking this question.
Avatar n tn I believe this drug is widely used in India but not in the U.S. There are several drugs available in the U.S. for the treatment of Osteoporosis and all have some value. One with a similar name (Boniva) is used quite often and is said to have good results.
Avatar f tn Just wondering as I have never heard of this before except with Osteoporosis. My mother has Osteoporosis and I am worried about her as she is not on anything for it except 1000 iu per day Vitamin D and she is almost 75 yrs old. They wanted to put her on a med called Forteo where she has to give herself an injection once per day every day for 2 yrs to grow new bone. I have read up on it and it says it caused bone cancer in mice so we have not put her on it yet.
163305 tn?1333668571 Having moved to Helen Hayes Hospital, a rehabilitation center north of New York City, in 1984 he published work that established the minimum effective dosage of an antiosteoporosis estrogen drug called Premarin. Because the findings suggested that fighting osteoporosis was tantamount to encouraging millions of women to use the drug, it made Lindsay an important person in the eyes of the drug's manufacturer, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.
Avatar f tn Each SAT occurance, my iodine uptake was initially zero and TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies negative. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis 2 years ago with Dexascan results having Z-scores slightly below -2.5. Recently I have been experiencing vague symptoms (fatigue, dry skin and hair, brain fog, etc.) that I attributed to recent menopause but my thyroid tests revealed the following: TSH = 4.24 (0.34-5.60) FT4 = 0.64 (0.62-1.12) TT4 = 3.9 (4.5-12.
Avatar n tn I had a total thyoidectomy in 1995 and have been on a suppressive dose of Levothroid ever since. I have already developed osteoporosis, which I have been told is most likely connected to the Levothroid dosage. Recently, I have been reading about an additional connection between high thryroid hormone levels and Alzheimer's Disease. I am extremely concerned about this issue. If you can give further information, I would be very grateful. Thank you.
