Forteo for osteoporosis side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Forteo for osteoporosis side effects

forteo

Avatar f tn Forteo is injected daily. The first few doses may cause dizziness and/or fast heartbeat. The most common long lasting side effects are dizziness and leg cramps. Forteo increases bone mass and strengthens.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
Nicelady You are wise to be concerned with side effects. I have had osteoporosis for many years, taken many type of drugs, had various side effects. Experience will be the only way to find the drug you can tolerate.
Avatar f tn I saw the breast cancer question posted by a member here mention she was taking Bonista, the medication for Osteoporosis. As far as I have researched, the only serious risk known for the teriparatide is bone cancer, not breast cancer. Hope this helps! As for myself, I am a patient suffering from severe osteoporosis. My doctor, realizing I cannot afford Forteo ($950 per month!), has suggested I try to find how I can take the equivalent, generic version, which is Bonista.
Avatar f tn I've been on Forteo since Feb 2011. I don't think I am having Forteo related arthralgia or any other side effects from it. I DO have sacro-iliac pain on one side only, but I believe it is from 2 falls in the past 3 months that were NOT caused by Forteo. I do know it's hard to find any forums anywhere that have current informantion or women on them.
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar n tn I have had very little problems with Prolia. I've done 4 injections over the past 2 years. Just a little bit of bone pain for the first 2 wks after the injection then, it goes away. That said, unfortunately, for me, my DEXA did not improve and my osteoporosis in my spine (the T-score) did not get better. Now, my doctor is sending me to a 'bone' clinic that apparently specializes in bone disorders such as osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn I have been on Fosamax for # months but am worried about the side effects. Is there any calcium that works better than others? I have been on calcium and vitamin D supplements for years but went from osteopenia level to full-blown severe osteoporosis in a few years I would appreciate any advice since the medical field tells you nothing but to take medication and deal with the outcome!!
Avatar f tn I wanted to know from women in their fifties and sixties if there have been any long term effects from having one removed. Like for instance early osteoporosis or early menopause. Things that the doctors might not of thought of on their own. I would also like to hear from women that haven't had any issues. Thank you so much and God Bless!
Avatar m tn Has anyone had experience with Duavee or Prolia? My doc did not go over the side effects of these but when I looked up Duavee it looked like hormone meds had severe side effects, one being particularly important to women, the increased risk of uteurus cancer. I guess I read that some take progestins with it to help decrease the risks of uterus cancer, but on the warning it says not to mix any additional estrogens or progestins together. Are these meds worth the benefits over the cons?
Avatar f tn t know that was a side effect..my gripe with doctors.. i ask about side effects and they always tell me " there are none' . just trying the calcium rich foods and supplements and since i cleared hcv a few months ago i have been a lot more active with energy and lifting heavy things.. i do not want to take the bone meds, i heard one of them can give you esophical cancer.i read this a year after my mom died of lung cancer that was high up by her throat… she took boniva! .
Avatar f tn I was just at the GI doc on Wednesday and he put me back on Prevacid for stomach acid - it is a proton pump inhibitor and he wrote orders for me to take calcium w/vitamin D because of the osteoporosis side effect with Prevacid. I had a DEXA scan this summer and my bone density was according to my PCP beyond excellent. I finally have one good thing about my body- strong bones!
Avatar f tn The only way to know how you will react with side effects is to try the drug and see. Many women do not have much problem with tamoxifen. However, you may also want to ask your oncologist about taking an osteoporosis drug. I am currently in a phase 3 drug study which is checking the protective effects of osteoporosis drugs to help keep breast cancer from recurring as bone cancer. Early results seem to be very promising.
Avatar f tn Irregular menstrual periods, or no periods at all Headaches Nervousness Depression Dizziness Acne Changes in appetite Weight gain Excessive growth of facial and body hair Hair loss Loss of bone mineral density Most of the side effects are not common. Change in the menstrual cycle is the most common side effect. You may experience irregular bleeding or spotting. After a year of use, about 50% of women will stop getting their periods. Their periods usually return when they discontinue the shots.
Avatar n tn I was treated with antibiotics for about 2 years for the lyme, and I have not been taking them for about a year. I had really felt pretty well over the past year or so. I figured the fatigue and "general feeling of being unwell" was just stress and just being overtired. I went to the Doctor last week and he ordered some labwork. The result came back with a Sed Rate of 68 which he said was quite high. Last year I had the same test and it was 4.
Avatar n tn are you still not taking any prescription drug for your osteoporosis? Am interested to know what/why your doctor is recommending for your treatment now... I'm 62 Fem. with T score -3.5. My doctor is putting me on Actonel but I am reluctant to start. Side effects are very worrisome... not sure what to do. I have started mega doses of supplements and calcium and D and excercise and I want someone to tell me that that has worked for them.
Avatar f tn I have been taking one Rx med for GERDS for over 10 years, usually the generic. Now for the last 4 yrs I've been on OMEPAZOLE and they just found out my hip bone has osteoporous arthritis. Can it be from the Omepazole? I drink milk, eat yogurt, eat calcium-rich food and never smoked or drank any alcohol ! I am overweight (a whole other story) and walk & garden a lot! I'm always in the garden if it's warm enough. SO I am active.
Avatar n tn I suggest you have yourself worked up for bone mineral density or osteoporosis. The bone pains should also be evaluated for the possibility of bone metastasis, which can be initially misconstrued as drug side effect. Regards and God bless.
Avatar f tn I'm a 59 year old woman who has started to randomly and for no apparent reason, gasp for breath. It comes out of nowhere and disappears as quickly as it comes. I've recently discovered that I may have been suffering with side effects from Prolia injections for osteoporosis that's caused some weird bites/blisters/scarring on my forearms so I've discontinued taking it but the skin issues continue. I'm wondering, could the gasping somehow be related?
747443 tn?1233024111 Call your doctor and tell them that the combo of meds are not working. It will be hit and miss until you find the right cocktail. I tried Lyrica but the side effects were too much for me, Same with Neuronton. I am finally taking Ultram ER 200mg 2 X a day, Flexeril at night along with a mild sleeping pill, I take Zoloft 100mg in the morning and 50mg at night. I also take Baclofen at night. My internist put me on Norco for the break through pain.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your feedback. My case has baffled most doctors. I drink alot of water, eat a healthy diet and don't smoke or drink. The only meds I take are for my bones (Forteo) as I found out that I had extreme osteoporosis in Nov. 2008. I have had my circualtion checked several times and it is reduced in my "weaker" foot. There is no blockages and I have no rare diseases.... My problem is only becoming worse and noone knows why....
Avatar f tn Anyway, yes I have read the horrible side effects which one of them is definitely hair loss. Well, just the vasculitis alone can cause the hair loss not to mention the cytoxan and prednisone. I am sorry this is happening to you though. It sounds as if you have had vasculitis a very long time and could probably share alot of info with the rest of us who believe we may have it or know that they already have it.
Avatar m tn All medications have the potential for side effects. Interactions between medications and herbal supplements are possible. Please check with your doctor and/or pharmacist before combining any medications and supplements.
