Common Questions and Answers about Flaxseed meal health benefits

flax-seed

Avatar m tn Loaded with alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps reduce inflammation, flaxseed has been used for centuries for medicinal and health reasons. Gandhi proclaimed, "Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health." The seed itself has terrific nutritional value, very usable protein, tremendous fatty acids, and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Additionally, they're a great source of fiber.
Avatar f tn I do alright using flaxseed meal rather than the psyllium based fibers that you mentioned. I can use just a little in water, like the fiber drinks, or just sprinkle a little on my food. It's an actual food product and it has nutritional benefits, like omega 3. I buy the Bob's Red Mill that is available at Trader Joe's, because it's more affordable. It's already ground flaxseed meal. I haven't heard of the Heather's Tummy Fibers, so I'll have to look for that.

Avatar f tn However, testing indicates that for many non-Spirulina blue-green algal products, harvested from natural lakes, consumption according to manufacturers directions results in a daily intake of microcystins above that considered acceptable by Health Canada and the World Health Organization. Microcystins are toxins which accumulate in the liver and can cause liver damage. They are naturally produced by some kinds of blue-green algae.
Avatar n tn When my wife was preparing for an operation, her lab work showed her liver counts to be very high, near 200. The Dr. said, many things eaten could raise these levels. They wanted to know if she had eaten cereal with flaxseed and said flaxseed could have a large effect. I mention this so you'll know if it happens to you.
Avatar f tn i also have been using coconut oil in my coffee with agave and in my smoothies ive read so many differant articles stating all the benefits of using coconut oil, fish oil, flaxseed, parssley tea. can i benefit from them?
Avatar f tn Hi, I take flaxseed oil. I was taking it for the benefits to the heart. Haven't heard about benefits to panic attack sufferers. Would like to learn more though.
Avatar f tn Is the "flaxseed meal" you speak of come already ground up? I have read that flaxseed does no good unless it's ground up.
Avatar f tn I would listen to your cardiologist or internal medicine doctor if they are very familiar with this situation. Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil can both sometimes increase bleeding in patients taking blood thinners like coumadin (warfarin), apirin, and plavix. In diabetics on glucose lowering drugs there is some evidence that suggest that flaxseed oil may increase fasting blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn I buy the liquid gels and also grind whole flaxseed and mix it into a healthy smoothie drink. (Obviously, the flaxseed is to be taken orally--never directly to the eye!
Avatar f tn A couple of members have mentioned using activated charcoal for the really bad gas. Most gastro doctors tell people to use psyllium fiber, like Metamucil. I have had to use other fibers, like flaxseed meal. It's true that you need to build up slowly how much fiber you use, especially when your system is obviously sensitive already. Like sparkle40, I can't use the wheat bran either. My gastro doctor mentioned Metamucil and the like to me.
Avatar m tn Something I have found very helpful for my IBS is the use of flaxseed meal as my fiber supplement. I noticed that a couple of other people have been mentioning this as well. If you've been using psyllium fiber, I suggest switching to flaxseed meal. I'm sure you and your mother will see some improvement in your IBS symptoms by using flaxseed meal instead of psyllium fiber. Psyllium fiber is known to be harsh and irritating to the gut.
480331 tn?1310403529 I started drinking Raspberry Red Leaf Tea in the middle of my 3rd trimester. This tea claims by midwives and health professionals to help women labor more effectively and less painful, due to an alkaloid called fragrine, which lends tone to the uterus, by strengthening the uterine wall. It is also noted that this tea helps in the prevention of miscarriage, nausea, preterm birth, menstral cramps, and a few other things. It warns or rather suggests to drink the tea after your 1st trimester.
Avatar n tn Jude is a female mini-dachshund, 5 years old, spayed, overweight at 15 lbs, down from 17. She is on a home diet of roast chicken breast, broccoli, carrot, brown rice and barley. Supplements are omega 3 fish oil, flaxseed oil, bone meal, and bran. It's always bothered me when someone would make her leg twitch (right rear) by petting her in the sensitive area. Of late I can't hardly pet her on the right side without making it twitch, and it's gotten worse.
Avatar m tn What vitamins and minerals are good for eye health and what are the optimal amounts? As far as I know, Vitamin A, beta carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc, lutein, and billberry are good for eyes.
Avatar f tn The dark chocolate is a good source of magnesium. I take flaxseed oil capsules 1000 mg twice a day. I don't take it with the evening meal, however, or it gives me dreams. I know yams are something my mom used to fix us for pms/period symptoms. Pumpkin seeds I was told is a good source of those omega 3 fatty acids, which is good for inflammation and mood.
Avatar f tn I can relate to some of this, because I have the same kind of IBS that you do. I don't know if I have FMS (I have the symptoms to indicate the strong possibility), but I do have CFS and MCS, so I can relate. We have a special problem, since we have many food sensitivities and allergies. I am sure you are already aware of the gluten intolerance and lactose intolerance issues, since they go with the territory. I was hospitalized with renal failure not too long ago myself.
Avatar n tn Hi there. As far as I know, studies about flax seed and cancer are still in their infancy stage. The cancer more frequently associated with this is prostate cancer. I'm quoting this text from the american cancer society website: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_1_1x_Flaxseed_Ginseng_Show_Promise_for_Cancer_Patients.
Avatar m tn There is a gentler fiber that I have found to be less irritating to the gut. This is flaxseed meal. I read of a woman who said that she used it much like one uses Metamucil and drinks it down first thing in the morning and last thing at night and has done so for years. Taking psyllium fiber (the main ingredient in Metamucil) wasn't helpful for her bowel troubles, but the flaxseed meal was. I find it helpful for me, too, but I simply add it directly to whatever I'm eating.

Avatar n tn The Budwig diet is mainly composed of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese with restrictions on eating animal meats, butter and sugars. Some holistic health enthusiasts believe that cancer patients are deficient in essential lipids that cottage cheese mixed with flaxseed can replace. The scientific journal “Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift” published a study in 2012 that determined that cancer diets, such as the Budwig, diet do not cure cancer and can have adverse health effects.
Avatar f tn I added 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to my diet for the past year. I was very discouraged when I received the results of my lipid panel results. Last year: total chol.=238, trig.=59, HDL=101, LDL=125. This year: total chol.=240, trig.=67, HDL=98, LDL=128. My bad numbers went up and my good number (HDL) went down. Why? (I am a 60 year old female. I exercise regularly (jog and ballet), I am 5'2" and weigh 92 pounds.
