Fear of public speaking graduate school

Common Questions and Answers about Fear of public speaking graduate school

fear

Avatar f tn Fear of heights in all its forms is, I believe, the 2d most common phobia (the first is fear of speaking in public, officially, but I'm guessing more people confront heights than the need to speak in public so I'm guessing heights might be the most common fear). I have this phobia, but didn't have it until I got a full-blown anxiety disorder. If this is your only phobia, good; if you have several and are anxious about a lot of things, harder.
Avatar f tn I think it came about as sort of a defense mechanism, as I was pushing myself to be more sociable i kind of developed depersonalization as a shield to anything at all bad that could happen when interacting with other people. I fear awkwardness, public speaking, etc. I am glad i pushed myself because I do love my friends even more now that I hang out with them outside of school ( never did before ). Is there anything I can do to make this depersonalization go away?

1183666 tn?1274275146 So, JESSiCA, we meet again! I'm glad to hear you're involved with a partner and a project, but I do understand your fear of public speaking. I'm positive the vast majority of us would rather streak through Wal Mart than get up in front of a group of people. (Would anybody notice us in Wal Mart? Somehow I think we'd just "blend!") I suppose there are a number of things you could try before it was your turn to be on stage.
Avatar f tn Heartland Institute - Opposied to the the Kyoto protocol , supports the privatization of public services;opposes tobacco control measure such as tobacco tax increases and denies the health effects of second-hand smoke; and it promotes the deregulation of health care insurance, hosts PolicyBot, a data base containing 22,000 documents from 350 U.S. right-wing think tanks and advocacy groups. There's more but I think this is enough proof of bias.
Avatar m tn e had this problems since i moved into secondary school. When i was little i used to be very confident not afraid of anything but now i think i some sort of nervous problem. When i am in school and i get asked a question or someone shouts my name my face goes bright red and my palms get all sweaty and i start to panic. This has basically took over my life and i'm getting to the stage where i wake up and i go '' where's the point? '' What should i do?
Avatar f tn Walking across the stage at 16 felt amazing lol good luck girl, I was at a public school which made it harder sometimes due to crappy teachers and distravtions, plus I skipped class a whole lot lol but ur doing it all at home so no reason u can't take ur time and get things done on ur own pace.

724112 tn?1292919407 Have any of you been pregnant and/or had a newborn while attending college/graduate school? If so, I could use some advice... My fiance and I have been TTC #1 since December, but, after finding out I was accepted into my first choice grad. school program (Master's of Forensic Science at GWU, in Washington D.C.), we decided to "cool it down" a bit--or at least "time" it better, so I won't need to take a term off.
Avatar f tn m finished taking classes and have less than a year of lab work left. I know what I want! I know plenty of men in graduate school who have had children while earning their PhD, but I've never known a women who has done it. My question is: Has anyone out there had a baby in graduate school or during a tenure track academic carrier? Academic carriers in the sciences? Early carrier professionals/business in male dominated environments?
Avatar f tn Hello there moms! Just curious to know if any of you are working and going to school? I'm 25 weeks and I'm a full time student on the weekdays and I work part time on the weekends, but luckily I'll be due after this semester ends.
Avatar f tn I am a graduate student. I have a fear of public speaking and a stage/performance fear when I speak in front of new people or students of my class. A few of my classes require that I give powerpoint presentations in front of the class. When I am on the spot, my voice and hands become shaky - I sometimes lose concentration to the point that I cannot get words out of my mouth even though I go in front of the class very well prepared.
Avatar f tn I hope I'm home in my room or something if it breaks that way I will know and won't have to have someone else clean it up lol. Every time me and my husband go anywhere public he's like "what if your water breaks here" it makes me nervous the rest of the time we are out lol.
Avatar n tn I kind of feel what your feeling. I'm 22 weeks pregnant I'm only 17 years old. I dropped out because the online schooling I was doing was messing me over and if I wanted to go to public school I'd have chances of catching bed bugs because the school is having problems. I'd rather go for my ged. The father is a bit older then I am &;already has his high school diploma.
6520484 tn?1399082398 You can do it. Im in my last year of nursing school. I graduate this year December 17. This quarter has been ok i still have a 3.7 gpa. Just been tired and sick especially on the days i have to do a 12 hour clinical shift.
Avatar m tn As BeeFree stated, it is very normal to feel anxious when we have to speak in front of a group of strangers. I'm sure that most people feel anxiety to some extent when put in that position. There are self-help books available that will teach you many tips and tricks to deal with this anxiety. If possible, take a Public Speaking class.........I did and it was the best thing I'd done for myself at that time.
Avatar f tn Anybody going to school throught ur whole pregnancy? Im 33weeks & 5days , my semester doesnt end until mid november.. im due on oct 31. Im so scared im going to go into labor during school .
Avatar f tn ll have to actually talk in front of everybody, that is a fear just about ALL of us have. Public speaking is probably the #! phobia the world over, but I seriously doubt they are going to ask you to make an impromptu speech! A very quick "thank you" is probably the most you'll have to utter, and that just to the person handing you the award.
Avatar f tn many people have a fear of public speaking. And remember anxiety and panic can come at the most inoppertune times even if we have previously been through the exact same experience panic free time after time. I also agree that you should not expect perfection and not be too hard on yourself. Just the fact that you get up there is something that you should give yourself credit for; that is no easy feat to accomplish in my opinion. Do you have other social situations that you get anxious in?
Avatar f tn One thing I learned a long time ago is that EVERYONE who speaks in public gets nervous, some to the point of vomiting. Even some of your your rock stars suffer with this. So know it is very common, most people have this fear. I used to have to speak a lot in public and learned from others that they are always envious of the one who is up there speking and happy it's not them.
1390847 tn?1344657468 A couple of the best things I learned from a public speaking class I took in college was that it really helps to admit to the audience right off the bat that your nervous. If you can make a small joke at this point would be great. Something like......."I'm so nervous right now I hope there's a doctor in the house!" (Maybe you can come up with a better one.
Avatar n tn I started taking concerta 8 months ago and it has made ia great change in the fear I USED to have speaking in front of people . I till stutter but not near as often when speaking in front of adults .
Avatar f tn As a public school teacher, I will definitely send all of my kids to public school. I see many wonderful things there; awesome teachers, high standards, a rigorous curriculum, etc. Yes, the behavior of kids has changed drastically in the past years. IMO, schools need more leeway to make parents/children accountable for their actions.
Avatar f tn I am In my first trimester and I am in nursing school and I work as a caregiver. However I feel really fatigue and tired throughout the day and I have one class twice a week in the mornings and one online I also have to check on my patient 3 times a day which is a lot of driving. Being pregnant makes me not even want to do the assignments but I want to continue to stay on track in order to graduate on time. The classes are fast pace 8wks each month.
Avatar f tn t really financially prepared for this but it leaves me with all the house work/dealing with two crazy dogs/cooking on top of full time school + 2 part time jobs whereas before we shared things fairly equally. I'm just tired and overwhelmed. And I know with a baby it's just going to be more so. Any other ladies in graduate studies or managed to survive graduate studies while pregnant/with newborns?? Seems like the timing couldn't be worse right now.
Avatar n tn My daughter is 18 and about to graduate from high school. This past winter my wife and I were out and she was home alone. She heard a noise and after our dog stopped barking she called us right away. When we arrived at home we found footprints in the snow outside of my office window. Since that time my daughter is deftly afraid of being alone in the house at night. She is heading off to college in the fall and her anxiety is getting worse and worse.
