1183666 tn?1274275146 So, JESSiCA, we meet again! I'm glad to hear you're involved with a partner and a project, but I do understand your fear of public speaking. I'm positive the vast majority of us would rather streak through Wal Mart than get up in front of a group of people. (Would anybody notice us in Wal Mart? Somehow I think we'd just "blend!") I suppose there are a number of things you could try before it was your turn to be on stage.
Avatar m tn As BeeFree stated, it is very normal to feel anxious when we have to speak in front of a group of strangers. I'm sure that most people feel anxiety to some extent when put in that position. There are self-help books available that will teach you many tips and tricks to deal with this anxiety. If possible, take a Public Speaking class.........I did and it was the best thing I'd done for myself at that time.
Avatar m tn Mine was a little nicer :)
Avatar m tn I have to take a speech class and I get really nervous when giving speeches or presentations. I wanted to know if there is something that will help me to relax and calm my nerves while giving my speeches.
Avatar m tn It will help. But if you're referring to public speaking to a large group of people, I suggest you take one prior to that day to make sure it isn't too sedating for you. If it's being prescribed for social anxiety, it will calm you down allowing you to feel better about conversing with others. The more you are able to talk, the easier it will get. Best wishes.
Avatar n tn I used to have EXTREME anxiety when speaking in front of others. One day a friend of mine called me a "lite weight" and it got me to thinking, you know what.. I can do this whats the big deal people do it all the time. I also thought: There are lots of people with this same "issue" so if I screw up most people would understand and for those that don't well GOOD FOR THEM.. The more I did it, the less and less anxiety I experienced.
Avatar f tn I know a few uni lecturers with ADHD that hold a clickable pen, standing still is harder for them so they use the clicker of the pen to distract their kinetic impulses to physically move, their still moving but in a less obvious and a more appropriate way for the situation of public speaking. I think the clicking can be distracting to some, but things like mini bean bags, squishy balls, knobbly objects can be useful if you need tactile and or kinetic stimulation to keep you grounded.
Avatar f tn Will taking a small amount of Xanax help with calming nerves for public speaking? Taking a small amount like 0.25 ?
Avatar m tn I guess you can say that I end up slurring words a little bit. Doesn't happen often. It jumps out of no where occasionally. I have noticed something though. You know how when people try to say a word and they end up saying "bleh" and slightly stick their tongue out a little bit giving it a stretch? I noticed that when I move my tongue around like that or do a little random movement with my tongue it feels a lot more flexible. Words are a lot less harder to pronounce especially.
Avatar m tn Not sure if this will help, but I HAD the same problem..extreme fear of speaking in front of groups. Also, anxiety. I take 12.5 mg of Paxil for anxiety and that has helped. I talk in front of groups alot. If it is really bad, I take a small dose of Xanax, and that calms me. I never took ativan. Good luck. Oh, Xanax does not effect my speaking, it just calms me abit. I don't slur or look like an idiot.
Avatar f tn d probably start by seeing a therapist or other professional who specializes in treating this problem, or maybe taking a public speaking course and practicing until you lose your fear of it. Or learning some CBT type techniques of relaxation and demystifying the situation. There are herbs and other amino acids, such as taurine, that can also be helpful, though any relaxation supplement or medication can cause sedation.
Avatar f tn Well, I took both speech and public speaking, and for a President Elect to be using uh, uh, uh, when added up, probably out numbered the entirety of every real word her spoke. In public speaking My teach enforced in me that is common in those who are not educated as such. Public Speaking is learned and a good reason for it. It is poor grammar to use the word uh, more than once in an entire paragraph. So, no matter how U perceive it......
Avatar m tn Recent visits to the Cardiologist found him to suggest my condition as benign and highly unlikely it will develop further. I have been asked to do a speech at a monstor wedding of 350 people in the coming months. I quiver at speaking to 20 people let alone 350 so I have been suggested Beta blockers as a relief pre speech to calm blood pressure and lower my heart rate. I've read they greatly assist musicians perform.
Avatar f tn It also means a lower chance of them getting in with bad influences, and a greater chance of them picking up a unique talent which could bring them, possible fame or even a very well paying job! Childhood Autism is a nightmare...
Avatar n tn I know a young child who is five years old and his speech habits are similar to those of your son. He started speech therapy at two years of age but as yet, no formal diagnosis has been given. His parents believe he is apraxic - the speech therapy has helped tremendously and he is doing so well.
Avatar n tn It is so exciting when a sm child makes a breakthrough. I belong to a support group for parents and teachers of children suffering from anxiety - many of whom are selectively mute. However, your title is a bit misleading. Anxiety is a life-long struggle and singing in a concert does not indicate that she has "overcome" her fears/anxieties. Most sm children often speak first using scripted text - i.e. singing, reading, reciting, etc.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
Avatar m tn t work, you need a specific system just for stutterers as the mechanical thoughts are not aligned with the speaking system. It involves many mechanical, technical and emotional factors. Even the fear of speaking, or if you are not able to correct your mistakes during your speech, you would need to face all those situations where you should speak.
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Avatar f tn ll have to actually talk in front of everybody, that is a fear just about ALL of us have. Public speaking is probably the #! phobia the world over, but I seriously doubt they are going to ask you to make an impromptu speech! A very quick "thank you" is probably the most you'll have to utter, and that just to the person handing you the award.
506477 tn?1225515279 Am I alone with all this fear? How do others cope? I want to be a blessing to my grown children, not a burden. We are so close and this is just such a shock for all of us. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have.
Avatar m tn It may also include psychological training and counselling for boosting self-esteem and reducing the fear and tendency of avoiding situations such as speaking in front of a group. Please consult another speech therapist because many people do take help in teen age and benefit from it. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
Avatar f tn s not them up there, because many have a fear of speaking in front of others as well. People will be paying more attention to what you are saying than the redness. Do a great job on your speaking, and this is what they will remember. Also, think about visiting a local hospital where teens & children are battling serious conditions, some are dying, some disfigured, it will put all this in perspective for you, and make you thankful that turning red is all you have to deal with.
9771188 tn?1405907831 I have ptsd had it since I was little but just got diagnosed about three years ago. I have noticed I have a social and speaking problem cause of it. It all depends on how you got it or the type of ptsd you have.
642568 tn?1223322600 You said that his speech is fine, but it sounds like he's language impaired to me. I'm an SLP in the public school system and 1/2 of my caseload (total of 53 students) are kids working on language, not speech. I imagine that you had a speech-language clinician evaluate him, but did they only look at articulation? They should have tested his language skills with a screener and then a longer assessment if he didn't pass. We use the CELF-4 or the OWLS...
Avatar n tn Anxiety can cause a wide variety of physical and mental behaviors, these type symptoms could be some of them, especially if it happens during public speaking. You did not note if the cramps occurred when you weren't speaking anything, a point you might discuss with the doctor soon. These symptoms can also could be the beginning of Parkinson's, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which are very serious and need medcial attention as early as possible.
