Common Questions and Answers about Estrogen and ovarian cancer

Avatar n tn My pathology report showed that my ovarian cancer was estrogen receptive/reactive. So why is HRT okay? My local gyno-oncologist and my gyno-oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Center in Seattle both indicated it was okay. I like being on estrogen, but I am concerned because it seems risky. What is your opinion?
Avatar f tn I do think your age as well as stage and grade of cancer are very important considerations before making this decision. I have had ovarian cancer and had a complete hysterectomy and both ovaries removed at age 37. In my opinion, if you are done having children and your doctor feels your estrogen is causing a great cancer risk, then this surgery is a good option.
Avatar f tn Could my recurrence of Ovarian cancer be attributed to my taking Evista for a year? I had ovarian cancer 15 years ago and after surgery and chemo, and a "second look" surgery with multiple biopsies was considered cured.I had a complete hysterectomy and the cancer seemed to be contained in my left ovary. Last winter I found a lump in my left groin which was biopsied and diagnosed as ovarian malignancy.
503702 tn?1276176714 Im in recurrence of OVCA after 15thms. did chemo and avastin trial. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately in November 2006 that ovary turned malignant as well and I had to have it removed and due to the fact that it was my second bout of cancer, and they still to this day cannot determine whether it was a new spontaneous cancer or a recurrance (I think this is because of the previous good pathology, and the fact that there was squamous cell on the outside capsule of the ovary) I had chemotherapy and radiation treatment with it completing in July 2007. I am currently in remission.
429647 tn?1249753429 only to find out that her cancer is estrogen postive and probably caused or in some part aided in the growth of her masses. This is a very touchy subject on this forum, and as much as I love and adore Mary, she and I are on opposite sides on this one. Flashes are horrid, I will agree that I have had a really tough time with them as well as the other symptoms of menopause....but, you know what....I am alive. Gather all the facts you can....best of luck.
Avatar f tn Women who are past menopause (ages 50-70) and have ovarian cysts have a higher risk of having ovarian cancer. The only way to diagnose ovarian cancer is looking at the cells under a microscope. There are tumour markers the doctors can test for called CA-125 and CA19-9 (both are blood tests) however numbers can be higher due to inflammation. Fibroids, ovarian cysts, PCOS, and endometriosis are all symptoms of estrogen dominance (high estrogen but low progesterone levels).
Avatar m tn I would like to take estrogen to help the menopause symptoms still driving me crazy one year after surgery and chemo for ovarian cancer stage 2c - I also had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy as I have a history of breast cancer in my family - I have heard the HRT can increase the incidence of OC but I am wondering if an estrogen patch would be safe as I have had my ovaries, uterus, tubes, cervix, and breasts removed surgically.
Avatar f tn A lot of women have a very hard time getting hormone replacement right after ovarian removal..it takes trial and error,...all women can be helped some need just estrogen some need more...different methods work better for some..there are patches, sprays, creames, I used Vivelle dot a estrogen patch..helped me alot...
Avatar m tn If so, did your results show the mutation on the BRCA 1 and/or 2 gene? If you do have either one or both of these mutations then your risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer are increased significantly. It's important to be genetically tested in order to aid you in your decision process. It can also help other members of your family to understand their own risks of these cancers.
Avatar f tn Congratulations on your eight years! I hate to be the one to say this but there is no such thing as "out of the woods" with cancer, I wish there was. What you've done is reduced your risk for another estrogen positive breast cancer and ovarian cancer. But that doesn't mean you won't get a different type of breast cancer in the remaining breast tissue or another part of your body. But you know as well as I do that each year we are NED with cancer is better for our odds.
Avatar f tn Statistical analysis showed that during the 25 years of follow-up, women who had removal of normal ovaries had a higher all-cause mortality rate, mainly from coronary heart disease and lung cancer. Although there was a lower incidence of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and in fact all cancers in the women who had their ovaries removed, the risk of death from cancer was higher. At no stage of the study was survival higher for the women whose ovaries were removed.
Avatar n tn Those are drugs that were primarily given to post chemo breast cancer patients since breast cancer is usually estrogen related. The correlation between breast cancer and estrogen related ovarian cancer is being studied, and the theory is if they work for breast cancer patients, they may work for estrogen related ovarian cancer, as well. For me, Aromasin has kept my cancer stable for the last 9 months.
Avatar n tn m not sure that the answers you seek will be on this forum, unless you have or are recovering from Ovarian Cancer or perhaps think you may have it. I know your question is important and I hope you find the correct forum in order to be better served. Perhaps the Women's Health??. Most importantly, what does your Dr. say?
Avatar n tn She died 7 years after a total hysterectomy of Ovarian Cancer with no Cancer at time of surgery....I have had many surgeries and often FSH is included in my work up but this is the first time it has been this elevated. (being checked due to some symptoms, not pre-op this time). Thanks for your input as far as doctors the one that ordered this turned out to be USELESS so I am working with my Internist and waiting on other labs.
1641433 tn?1303010754 I was wondering if you can tell me if ERT can cause my cancer to recur after i finish chemo or if it can can cause my cancer to grow and chemo not to work??i ma really worried about that considering what the media is saying about hrt and ert and at the same time I am wayy to young to live my life in menopause and all the diffiulties that it brings.
Avatar f tn How closely linked are ovarian and breast cancer? When I had initially gone in and got an ultrasound for my ovary (in Aug. I think) I also complained about pain in my right breast so they ultrasounded that too and they told me there was a tiny cyst (about 2 cm). It is still quite painful quite often. When I went in to get the ovary removed I asked my gyn. about the cyst in my breast and if it could be related and she kind of blew it off saying that it was a totally separate issue.
Avatar f tn Hi having surgery next week for large ovarian cyst in one ovary and smaller ones in other. Ovaries and tubes to be removed. Surgeons dont think it is cancer and have asked, if it is benign do i want a hysterectomy. Pros, no chance of cancer in the future. Cons, more surgery, risks, effects etc. I am 66 healthy but overweight.
Avatar n tn what can cause ovarian cancer? can hormone for menopause cause it,? any headache medication?
Avatar n tn They have given mum a hormone tablet called femara to take for the rest of her life which they have said is an anti cancer drug and will kill any cancer cells. Has anyone had this? I am pleased that the chemo has worked.
408448 tn?1286883821 I have read so much about estrogen receptors and ovarian cancer it surprised me when my oncologist said it had nothing to do with ovca, only with breast cancer. I appreciate all that you do for us.
429647 tn?1249753429 He thought it would be okay because of no family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Well two months of HRT and my new Ca-125 is up to 12.5. So what do some of you think. I just got the results from the nurse, not sure what to do next, except to go off evomist.
Avatar m tn I did read that certain people who carry a specific Gene, found out with special bloodwork done by gynocolgists, are more likely to get ovarian, breast and also colon cancers. I never had the test, but my father died of colon cancer and my mom has breast cancer (DCIS). Increased estrogen also plays a part. Are you in menopause yet? I thought I was. but just got my period after 1 whole year of not having it, so now am wondering if the upsurge in hormones is behind all of this.
