It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Epinephrine is the a hormone and neurotransmiter. It is produced by the adrenal gland an is a "fight-or-flight catecholamine." So is norepinephrine. In biochemistry, the prefix "nor" means that norepinephrine is an analog of epinephrine.
They function quite differently in the body. epinephrine is most commonly thought of in terms of t effect on the sympathetic nervous system - increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure, hyper alertness, etc.
Involved is the sympathetic nervous system that prepares the body for action...oftened referred to as the "fight or flight" response to a stressful situation. And it quickly does the following and heart rate is only one factor:
Increases strength of skeletal muscles
Decreases blood clotting time
Increases heart rate
Increases sugar and fat levels
Reduces intestinal movement
Inhibits tears, digestive secretions.
m wondering with my heart problem how dangerous is it to get a dose of epinephrine and how will that affect my heart? I had an epinephrine dose in the early nineties due to a breathing problem, but that was before I was diagnosed with the mvp and atrial misfire.
s always high. I get heart rates of 100-150 (though my resting heart rate is 50), ice cold hands and fingers, palpitations, almost the feeling of panic. And my BP answers with results up to 160/90. If I, towards all odds, manage to stay calm when I measure it, it's usually 110/60 or lower.
BP and heart rate aren't especially related but if your heart rate is high, there is usually a reason for that (elevated stress hormones) which also increases the blood pressure.
s correct that local anesthetics contain both lidocaine and adrenalin (epinephrine). They both can have effects on the heart, adrenalin has an obvious effect and lidocaine is actually an antiarrhythmic drug (class 1b sodium blocker) which may have proarrhythmic effects.
The problem is - adrenalin is added to prevent the lidocaine from having systemic effects, the blood vessels are constricted. If you have reactions towards lidocaine, choosing the one without adrenalin would be bad.
I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this:

I recently went through a similar experience with lidocaine. I had a ruptured cyst in my breast and as it had broken through one of my milk ducts it had developed an abscess. The doctor wouldn't let me leave without having a butt shot of antibiotics - she wanted fast acting because I had a high fever and my breast was the size of Mount St. Helens. When the nurse came in to inject me she made the mistake of telling me that it was antibiotic PLUS lidocaine.
Do these drops have enough in it to maybe cause for me to have the same reaction? So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all. He examined my eyes without dialating them.
I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage the day that I had a mole removed at my dermatologist. They used Epinephrine and Xylocaine and when we received the autopsy report it revealed that my baby was perfectly normal and healthy without chromosonal issues prior to him dieing in my womb that day. The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever. An EKG will verify that because tissue death is reflected in an abnormal ST segment.

Seems we get adrenaline or epinephrine pushes without a quick nor epinephrine response due to hormone changes. I'm been through it. Doctors were no help at first, then I was medicated with a Beta blocker for an entirely different problem (blood pressure and heart rate issues) and wow.....

It also says to consult your doctor before using if you have "..........a certain type of tumor (pheochromocytoma)."
Should we ask about waiting to begin this beta-blocker until after the 24-hour urine collection is finished? Will starting it now possible skew the results?
both WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE,YES,WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE and I made sure of that before the skin test.They had to discontinue the Lidocaine because of heart side effects.But they finished with the other one and they thought that everything was fine and sent me home..The next day,BOOM! they hit with a vengence..P.V.C.S over and over again lasting for 3 weeks or so until they finally tapered off.
There is also a specific condition which is found in about 30% of East Asians (Japan, China and Korea) called the alcohol flushing response which includes elevated heart rate as well as facial flushing after drinking alcohol. For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. Have you had your thyroid and those adrenal hormones: epinephrine, norepinephrine, metanephrine and normetanephrine levels checked? Do you have any additional symptoms that you think might be unrelated to menopause, such as shortness of breath with exertion?
Ive never been told I needed antiobiotics bfore dental work. I have pvcs/pacs and possible svt. My heart is structurally normal according to my recent echo. Im a bit concerned about developing endocarditis. Should I ask my doctor about getting antibiotics even though Ive never been told to take them?? Also, Ive read alot about antibiotics being dangerous and causing long Q. What antibiotics are safe to take if you have pvcs?
Oh yeah! Like viperron, the epinephrine makes my heart pound, I get the sweats, and shakes. My dentist doesn't use it on me anymore. I also get the heart pounding when eating or drinking certain things like too much caffeine (1 dr. pepper max), msg is a big culprit, eating too many carbs especially in the morning, cold meds, generally aspirin ( I can take 1 baby aspirin), ....
Along with the pounding heart I get heart arrythmias and racing (until ablation).
After that, my heart was racing, hands were shaking and had to sit up . Immediately told the dentist and dental assistant, they gave me a few minutes waiting for the medicine to numb the area an to wait out the shaky feeling I had. After a few minutes, they did the dental procedure that went well. So told them I didn't want the lidocaine again, it was a bit scary to get that racing heart rhythm, shakiness for no reason.
