Effect of avodart on psa

Common Questions and Answers about Effect of avodart on psa

avodart

Avatar f tn s father passed away from prostate cancer that spread to the back bone and blood. My dad is on Avodart and his PSA is 1.5 which the doctor is very happy with. His doctor, who is a specialist, said that if the PSA does not go up in 6 months and continues to decrease, then he may not need another biopsy after the 6 months unless the PSA goes back up. My dad is in a study and is being evaluated every 4 to 6 months.
Avatar n tn I would look into recent publications, which have obtained a fair amount of press, that indicate that onset of positive diagnosis at age 75 does not warrant any treatment or any further testing, given the surgery risk and the immense lowering of quality of life with treatment and the usually slow progression of the cancer that will not precede expected life expectancy.
Avatar m tn I can understand your concern for the low PSA levels. First of all, PSA levels are not diagnostic of prostate cancer and you shouldn’t worry about it. There is no specific normal or abnormal level of PSA in the blood. In the past, most doctors considered PSA levels of 4.0 ng/mL and lower as normal. More recent studies have shown that some men with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/mL have prostate cancer and that many men with higher levels do not have prostate cancer.
Avatar m tn After adjusting for Avodart, PSA is well below the normal level of 3. Do I have an undetected sexually transmitted infection, such as HSV-2. Is it possible that an undetected chlamydial infection could be causing this burning. I've never had any sort of "outbreaks," nor do I have any sort of “discharge.” This burning began when I started taking Avodart AND Depo Testosterone injections concomitantly, just over three years ago.
Avatar n tn You must avoid donating blood for 6 months after stopping the drug for the risk of exposure of pregnant women to Avodart through the donated blood. It affects male genital development or causes external genital abnormalities in male fetus. There have been studies supporting no effect in fetus if male partner is taking this drug provided the female partner takes precaution against a broken or crushed capsule which can be absorbed via skin. You are welcome with further queries if any.
Avatar m tn If his PSA value is low, it is just BPH (benign Prostate Hyperplasia). The prostate is enlarged (although 22cc is not big) and can press against the bladder or limit the flow of urine. The first can give rise to urge incontinency (urge to pee although the volume in the bladder is still low), the second can make it difficult to fully empty the bladder and so shortens the interval between to toilet visits.
Avatar f tn here is the link .... diet may have an effect on PSA levels....PSA levels are not reliable indicators of cancer. http://www.ehow.com/about_5373002_foods-lower-psa-levels.
Avatar m tn Hi. I am a 61 year old, white male. In the past, I had been VERY heterosexually active. I am now in an exclusive, monogamous relationship. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with BPH, and prescribed a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. My urine stream improved. Frequency abated. So the drug worked. I asked my urologist to consider putting me on the standard dosage of Depo Testosterone, strictly as an exogenous source of free testosterone, due to malaise, fatigue, etc.
Avatar m tn When I developed gynecomastia (which is minor and I ignore) I lowered the dose of AVODART to one twice a week which is 8/month (from 15/month). AVODART has a long half life. Will 8/month still work? I wrote to GLaxo who make Avodart and they said what you said "ask your physician". My physician is very busy and I don't want to waste his time. My next appointment is in June and I will ask at that time if I don't have an answer by then.
Avatar m tn No do not change your medicines if Flomax works. Even if you stopped or switched to another type you could still have floppy iris syndrome. If it works keep on it and tell your eye surgeon. Special techniques and instruments and drops make FIS not the problem it use to be when we first saw it.
Avatar n tn It took around 5-6 hours for a small amount of urine to flow, but I am experiencing an improvement in flow over the past 12 hours, where the flow and volume has started to increase gradually. Is it normal to have this sort of development after removal of a foley catheter? Do I need to do some excercises to regain normal bladder control and urine flow? Your response and advice would be much appreciated.
Avatar m tn The doc give enough for 3 weeks but I would think I would need to stay on for longer than that. I have had no side effects as I know of and I believe it has helped. How long has others stayed on this ? Thanks for any help.
Avatar n tn Thanks for your response - had first visit and after exam showed nothing from "feel" and I inquired about the effect of heavy exercise and sexual activity 24 hrs prior to the last PSA we decided to do another PSA test that day. Got reults back and it was 5.3 instaed of the 6.3 before. I've read where in cancer cases this number should never go down and a "bouncing" number is more likely age and activity related. Have another consult with the doctor in 2 weeks.
Avatar n tn 60 plus year old - if i had sex or masterbation before the psa tsst can that effect the psa number in the blood test? let's assume either having sex or masturbation for a daily period of a week before the test. seeking advise.
Avatar m tn The efficacy of casodex and lupron is comparable and both may be used in cases of suspected recurrence as part of hormonal therapy. The preference of one over another could be made on the side effect profile. I would suggest discussing the situation and the suggested management plan in detail with your treating urologist/ oncologist. Hope the information is helpful. Take care!
Avatar n tn Hence, a thorough discussion on the effect of these medications would be best. Stay positive.
Avatar m tn many doctors wont recommend it because they are not trained to administer it or do not have the equipment ... My numbers were almost identical to yours... psa was 4.5 and gleason of 3+3. My psa is now .03. I had no side effects during or after my proton treatments.. I was not sick or even felt bad one single day. Its like Im cured and was never sick... Proton has approximately a 90 % cure rate and little to no side effects.. I am so glad I had it..
Avatar m tn 03 PSA in 2011 my Urologist prescribed Finasteride to stop the conversion of dihydrotestosteone and the PSA dropped to .02 and remained there for several years. On a later visit to the urologist I commented on this drug to control my PSA and he vehemently denied it was for PSA control but said it was prescribed for urinary issues. That was not true-I had never complained to him about urinary issues. I chose to see another urologist at another medical practice.
Avatar m tn I read an article study of Japanese men with PSA between 2 and 4 which concluded "PSA-ACT is better than total PSA and equivalent to the free-to-total ratio for detecting prostate cancer in men with PSA levels of 2.0-4.0 ng/ml, and is thus useful for reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies" to Google "Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) complexed to alpha..." I fall within the category my PSA is 2.54 at the moment last monday. 4 years ago it was 1.5.
1272624 tn?1395434357 After six months, the researchers found methotrexate had no significant effect on objective measures of disease activity. But it did seem to offer subjective benefits for some – that is, doctors and patients seemed to agree the drug was beneficial based on doctor observation and how the patients reported they felt. Bernard Rubin, DO, division head for rheumatology at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, says that’s not an unimportant consideration.
Avatar m tn If It is removed to quickly it tears bits on skin from the wall, you get the picture. Anyway it can tear in thin ribbons kind of like a cuticle that tears back on you fingernail, it just keeps tearing in a line as long as it has tissue to tear. The good news is the skin will grow back but might take a month or so to complete. Till then try not to push to hard when urinating, and goes easy on the sex if you catch my drift! I hope this help ally your fears. Take care.
Avatar n tn age may be relevant to risk. A lowering of psa is good but should still have biopsy if advised by urologist.
Avatar f tn In addition, positive surgical margins have been associated with local recurrence and distant metastases in cases of men treated for localized prostate cancer. A rapid rise in PSA as described is not unheard of. Imaging studies (MRI and bone scan) should be performed. Adjuvant radiation therapy should be discussed with your physician. Avatar n tn Depending on what exactly was performed during the procedure, ureteroscopy and cystoscopy, or any manipulation of the urinary tract can transiently affect PSA levels. By 8 to 10 weeks though, most of that inflammation should have subsided and your PSA level would not be affected. If there is doubt, you can repeat PSA in a couple weeks to verify the value.
Avatar n tn I have been tested with slightly high PSA (2.5, 2.36, 2.48) age 44. Tests at age 32 and 40 were 1.8 and 1.6 respectively. I have recently had bouts of nocturia with urgency and a continuous feeling of needing to urinate, even after just voiding. Some twinges of pain in my prostate. These last about 12 hours and then go away. I may go a couple days and then another episode. I've tried Leviquin for 30 days with no effect.
