Avodart and psa levels

Common Questions and Answers about Avodart and psa levels

avodart

Avatar n tn Avodar and Proscar are 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. These drugs reduce serum PSA levels. New PSA baselines can provide insight to the aggressiveness of your disease. Sincerely, Ashutosh K.
Avatar m tn As I have mentioned earlier, studies suggest inverse associations between obesity and PSA with low PSA levels found on obese people. However it has also been suggested that PSA concentrations are lower among men with higher BMI or with higher energy intake. Since you have increased the time gap between your diet, it is less likely to be the reason for your low PSA levels. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn s father passed away from prostate cancer that spread to the back bone and blood. My dad is on Avodart and his PSA is 1.5 which the doctor is very happy with. His doctor, who is a specialist, said that if the PSA does not go up in 6 months and continues to decrease, then he may not need another biopsy after the 6 months unless the PSA goes back up. My dad is in a study and is being evaluated every 4 to 6 months.
Avatar m tn I am a 61-year-old, white male. In the past, I had been VERY heterosexually active. I’m not gay. I am now in an exclusive, monogamous relationship and have been for quite some time. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with BPH, and prescribed a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Urine stream improved. Frequency abated. I asked my urologist to consider putting me on the standard dosage of Depo Testosterone, strictly as an exogenous source of free testosterone, due to malaise, fatigue, etc.
Avatar n tn s physician. Also, the PSA levels should be monitored closely now. Surgery is an option here. PSA levels are expected to decline after surgical removal of the prostate. At this point, discuss the options with the physician. Medications ( chemotherapy and hormone therapy) may be given first prior to radiation therapy or when surgical therapy fails to bring down PSA levels.
Avatar m tn Saw my primary MD today. He said that the Flomax relaxes muscles in the bladder and prostate, and the Avodart shrinks the prostate. He said that after a year or so, if the prostate has gone down and reduced the problems, they like to eliminate the Flomax, as it is no longer necessary. Long story short, I now have a prescription for Avodart alone. I realize that it may not reduce the surgery risk, but one less drug is a good thing.
Avatar m tn I recently was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My PSA was 4.8 and a gleason of 3+3. I also do a lot of bicycle riding. I've already had an elevated PSA when I was tested 12 hours after a 35 mile bike ride. My question is, how long should I wait from my last bike ride before taking another PSA test.?
Avatar m tn I'm 68 years old and have had Cataracts for over 2 years. I've been taking Avodart for over a year. Should I stop taking Avodart and wait awhile before cataract surgery or will the informed Dr be able to work with my eyes? I've never taken Flomax and have heard the warnings from the commercial and read about Flomax. I'm concerned about any complications. I'm also pretty active. Can I still swim after surgery and what are the chances of the lens shifting or coming loose?
Avatar m tn When I developed gynecomastia (which is minor and I ignore) I lowered the dose of AVODART to one twice a week which is 8/month (from 15/month). AVODART has a long half life. Will 8/month still work? I wrote to GLaxo who make Avodart and they said what you said "ask your physician". My physician is very busy and I don't want to waste his time. My next appointment is in June and I will ask at that time if I don't have an answer by then.
Avatar n tn Some alb may offer cPSA which direct measure bound PSA (related to cancer) but not measure total PSA and %free PSA, but most labs do not offer cPSA. There is a book - The complete prostate book, by J. Stephen Jones from Cleveland Clinic Foundation, describe all prostate issues and PSA test in details. Good luck for your PSA test, hope it will stable. And please keep us posted. The best regards.
Avatar m tn Hi. I am a 61 year old, white male. In the past, I had been VERY heterosexually active. I am now in an exclusive, monogamous relationship. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with BPH, and prescribed a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. My urine stream improved. Frequency abated. So the drug worked. Avatar n tn Infection or inflammation of the prostate gland or tissue remaining after prostate surgery can cause your PSA levels to increase. Once prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, PSA levels generally return to normal. - Recent ejaculation. Ejaculation (orgasm) can cause a temporary increase in PSA levels. To get the most accurate reading, don't ejaculate for two days before you have a PSA test.
Avatar n tn Every PSA test I have ever had has been "abnormal" and also very low free PSA ratio (7%). I've had all my internal organs scanned (prostate ultrasound scan 3 times) had a biopsy - all 12 cores cancer free and everything else completely normal - no signs of cancer anywhere in my body. Seems to me that PSA testing is pretty useless and only causes extreme anxiety.
Avatar n tn Depending on what exactly was performed during the procedure, ureteroscopy and cystoscopy, or any manipulation of the urinary tract can transiently affect PSA levels. By 8 to 10 weeks though, most of that inflammation should have subsided and your PSA level would not be affected. If there is doubt, you can repeat PSA in a couple weeks to verify the value.
Avatar n tn My father had his prostate removed in 2006. His PSA levels post prostate removal have been steadily increasing. He is now at 0.6 and is experiencing pains in his hips. He has never fully recovered from the surgery and still experiences issues with his bladder. My question is, at the current level should we be concerened and push for him to seek futher treatment as he is stubborn and doesn't think it is anything to worry about or is he right?
Avatar m tn Thanks I got another psa and a free psa . Results psa 3.7 and free psa 17%. Psa up again and free psa should be 25% or higher. Not good enough to say no to biopsy. Scheduled for wed. With agleason of 7 what option did you take radical, seeds, radiation or other.
Avatar n tn 58 is well within the normal range, however if considered on the higher side by your urologist, you could take a short antibiotic course and get the PSA levels repeated and if still high, consider getting free PSA levels done. You may like to discuss the situation with your treating urologist. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar n tn I want to share a similar experience but want to preface it with the caution that this was only what happened to me. Its not intended to say this is whats happening with you but? It could be. I too had difficulty passing urine and it became bad enough that my Doctor had me self Cathing (Use a cath only long enough to drain the bladder say 6 or 7 times a day) I was sent to the hospital to have Urodynamics testing. This is a test to measure your urine flow. Mine was zero.
Avatar f tn By that logic PSA levels should be higher in those men that consume meat and dairy compared to vegetarians with or without seed implants. I don't think so.
Avatar n tn he tried avodart for 1 year but not worked good for him thats why he stop and try another drug name proscar...
Avatar m tn Acute holding back of urine would not cause elevated PSA levels. I would suggest repeating the levels in a week and if still high you may consider a percent free PSA test. Further investigation/ management plan can be chalked out accordingly. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar m tn Results of the PSA are not diagnostic of prostate cancer. If PSA levels come back in the highly elevated range, it can indicate prostate cancer, and further diagnosis is indicated. (http://prostatecancer.about.com/od/screeninganddetection/a/PSATest.htm) With regards to your prostate node, was there a biopsy done? You should discuss this with your doctor for proper evaluation and to rule out cancer. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn However, biopsy itself, rigorous physical activity affecting the prostate, such as bicycle riding, may cause a temporary rise in PSA levels and excessive doses of some chemotherapeutic drugs, may increase or decrease PSA levels. It is recommend that a high PSA should be repeated (between 6 weeks and 3 months after the high PSA) before taking any further action.
