I have been on treatment for PCOS for a year and a half now with Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol birth control pills. My OB/GYN asked for a blood test in order to see how my hormones are doing. While I am content that my testosterone levels are within normal range (it was very high at the moment of diagnosis and I was suffering from many uncomfortable effects) my prolactin levels are 38.25. I understand that this is high but, is it very high? should I be concerned?

The chances of pregnancy from this event remain extremely low, for all of the reasons I mentioned in my first post. There is not a lot I can add to that, nor can anyone give you hard numbers.

There are many new pills available in the market with lesser side effects of weight gain, mood changes etc.Birth control pill containing Drospirenone and ethinylestradiol may be helpful since they have lesser side effects. Drink plenty of water everyday and avoid oily fried foods to prevent acne. For more queries and assistance do consult your gynecologist before starting any new pill. Keep me posted.

I have high prolactin since i was 14. I have never had a positive test if i am not pregnant. Your doctor should be able to explain. For my understanding high prolactin has nothing to do with being pregnant. Hgc levels are! Prolactin is just an hormone that will peoduce milk on your breast, even male can have high prolactin. Hope this help.

Prescription Drugs
Prescription drugs can cause excess secretion of prolactin. Some anti-depressants, painkillers, and opiates block dopamine, preventing prolactin secretion from being inhibited. This can cause your prolactin levels to rise.
Other causes include: Hypothyroidism and PCOS – polycystic ovarian diseas. In many cases we cannot find a cause.
How is a high prolactin level treated ?
If you do have a high prolactin level, the good news is that this is treatment is very effective.
Traditionally, prolactin levels were measured in ng/ml, and normal prolactin levels in women are less than 20 ng/ml. The new units are pmol/l and to convery you need to multiply by 44. This means the normal level is less than 700 pmol/l or mIU/L
High prolactin levels can cause anovulation. Some women with hyperprolactinemia may also notice that they have a milky discharge from their breasts. This is called galactorrhea.
Did they check your prolactin level? Lactation and an irregular menstrual cycle are symptoms of having an elevated prolactin level. Of course, there are other things that can cause these symptoms. But the prolactin blood test is an easy test that may be worth doing before some other workups.
How does high prolactin affect the skin and hair? my skin got saggy, puffy and pale. I am on cabergoline now and wonder if it will help it. Could it have been a decrease in estrogen? My hair seems thinner and "off"
Can prolactin also affect allergies? my skin is also blotchy now and my allergies seem crazy.
