I'm currently taking Doxycycline for anti-malaria reasons. I was wondering if it's unsafe to take for 5 consecutive months?
No malaria prophylactic medication is 100% effective and it is extremely important that you try to minimize insect bites by covering up with clothes and by applying insect repellent that contains at least 30% DEET (you can purchase this at any outdoor store--REI, EMS, Bass Pro Shops, ****'s, etc).

My LLMD treated the babesiosis first, and the mepron/zith did the trick. I was way better just getting rid of the babs. I haven't heard or read much of anything about lariam (aka Mefloquine) ... but I just looked it up on wikipedia (however trustworthy that is or isn't), and found some interesting stuff:
"Mefloquine is used to prevent malaria (malaria prophylaxis) and also in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. ...
Chloroquine has not been found to have any harmful effects on the fetus when used in the recommended doses for malaria prophylaxis; therefore, pregnancy is not a contraindication for malaria prophylaxis with chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine sulfate. For travel to areas where chloroquine resistance is present, mefloquine is the only medication recommended for malaria chemoprophylaxis during pregnancy.
He also said it did not resemble an STD. Forgot to mention that I had been taking doxy as malaria prophylaxis. And the first doc said if I was worried about STD to double up my doxy for two weeks. Present day, noticed a small (about 4mm diameter) 'bald spot on tongue'. Had RPR-qualitative performed. Negative/ non reactive done by LabCorp. Are syphilis concerns unfounded?
d like to travel (South America, India, Africa) require immunizations/prophylaxis. What immunizations/prophylaxis are considered safe to take/receive at this age? Should we steer clear of these destinations for a while or can they be visited safely? We would only be able to travel for 2 weeks at a time and wouldn't plan on going very far off the tourist trail.

I took single dose of doxycycline everyday for 6 weeks during the summer. Would that have cleared a chamydia infection.
I am visiting Laos/Thailand in Jan 2011 and I have been advised to take anti-malaria tablets while there called Doxycycline.
Does anyone know if there is any interaction between these two drugs? Can it make one or the other not work as effectively?

If you were traveling outside of the country and you were taking a medicine called doxycycline for malaria prophylaxis, you would also gain benefit from decreasing the chances of acquiring a tick-borne illness.

The usual guidance on chloroquine is to begin taking the medication 1-2 weeks prior to travel and for 4 weeks after returning. So, yes, the medication is still definitely "doing something" after you leave the area with malaria.
It is unlikely that a dry, non-productive cough without a fever is representative of malaria.
Because you did not begin taking chloroquine prior to your arrival in Honduras, you were probably not protected the week you were there.
Does anyone have experience on malaria prevention for Hepatitis B patients? I want to go on a safari in East Africa, but I'm concerned about how anti-malarial pills such as Malarone and Doxy interact with the Hepatitis B virus. I have chronic Hep B and my levels are high enough that I've been prescribed Viread. Malarone and Doxy seem to be related to causing some sort of liver damage...

I had this medicine left over from a trip to asia as it is also a malaria drug. I have now been taking it for 11 days, even if I had caught Chlamydia or Gonorrhea would the drug have cleared it up by now. I have had no symptoms. also would this have cleared up any syphilis infection that I may have picked up.
Second, if you were on doxycycline for malaria prophylaxis, it is unlikely that you got infected, even if she was. The doxy would prevent it.
Third, between the various antibiotics you've taken, if you had chlamydia, nongonococal urethritis or gonorrhea, they would have been cured.
Fourth, if you've been tested through the military (you didn't mention whether you were or not), and your tests are negative, this is good evidence that none of those infections are present.
I do not want to stop taking the doxycycline as I want to ensure I am malaria free (I did get a few mosquito bites on my trip), but the thought of having heart-burn, gas, cramping, and really urgent, loose bowel movements for another three weeks is almost unbearable.

Within an hour I took 200mg doxycycline as i read somewhere that it helps. Can you please, If there is a risk of any STI. Will taking doxycycline for more days help, if yes then how much and how many days.
Have been on doxycycline for malaria prevention. After shaving my scrotum and penis I developed redness on the scrotum. It doesn't appear as a typical rash. There are no bumps or raised skin or edges. Red skin that is dry (initially flaky), itchy, warm to the touch, sensitive and skin appears thin. After a few days the redness spread to the penis and now the tip of my penis (penile ring) is red and sensitive.

4 weeks ago I had an encounter with a Nigerian csw, I thought the condom had broken but did not see it, other members have told me I would have known. It was maximum 1 minute of sex.
Here is my timeline of illness:
*6-7 days after 'exposure' - retro orbital headache and aching shoulders/upper back, some mild fever (possibly kept down by codine for headache).
I then went to Asia travelling for 3 months where I took 100mg Doxycycline every day for about 60 - 70 days (for malaria). Since then I had unprotected vaginal sex again about 4 weeks ago (only time since last time). I had a couple of symptoms and then got diagnosed with Chlamydia.
My questions are:
a) Would the Doxycyxline have cleared up any Chlamydia (if present) prior to Asia. Given that I had no symptoms before recently.
