Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem for high blood pressure

tiazac

1689583 tn?1387752394 t have high blood pressure. I had to reduce the dose while in a study for a similar medication (PI). PIs can increase the amount of blood pressure medication in you if you take a calcium channel blocker like diltiazem.
Avatar n tn I am currently on 30 mg of diltiazem 3x day and i was wondering how effective is this dose at bring down your blood pressure. and how much would it bring it down. a rough estimate would be great. for i am hoping to come off of this medicine.
Avatar m tn It may also be causing atrial fibrillation later, so if there is a cause (like high blood pressure, overweight, sleep apnea, pulmonary diseases, etc), you must get it treated by your doctor. Is your blood pressure normal when you don't have the tachycardia? As far as I know, treatment is: 1) To treat the underlying condition, if it exists, and 2) if this will not stop the tachycardia from happening, the spot causing the tachycardia may be ablated.
177337 tn?1310059899 My blood pressure is somewhat low, 100/70 avg., and diltiazen lowers blood pressure. It went down to 70 something to under 50 and it actually casued me to have a panic attack and couldn't sleep. So I stopped taking them. When I talked to me ep to explain what the medicine did, he said I was just supposed to take them during a SVT attack. Don't know what your blood pressure is, just know that diltiazem lowers it.
Avatar f tn I have been taking metoprolol and diltiazem for sixteen months and initially the medications brought the SVTs under control. Fourteen months ago I started coughing blood and experiencing chest congestion. This took my attention off any heart issues and sent me on a long search for the cause of the bleeding. After many tests and visits with various specialists I never did get the answer. The bleeding resolved itself after 10 months (last October) and has not reappeared.
Avatar n tn About 1.5 months ago, my doctor changed one of my high blood pressure medication from Atenolol (beta blocker) to Diltiazem (calcium channel blocker) since Atenolol caused insomnia. Ater the change, I do sleep much better. However, I have noticed that I have occasional minor coughing. Has anyone have similar experience with Diltiazem? Any side effects of Diltiazem that you experienced ? Thank.
Avatar f tn m a female, but I can share my experience switching from a beta blocker to diltiazem. I have been taking beta blockers for 8 years for SVT and afib. I had an episode of afib and was in the hospital is Sept. They took me off the beta blocker and put me on diltiazem. It didn't control my heart rate like the beta blocker. My resting heart rate went from upper 60s to the low 80s. After a few days without my beta blocker, I ended up in the ER, in sinus tachycardia with a rate of about 120.
Avatar m tn I was on tiazac 360mg for a couple of years for high blood pressure.I started having palpitations, skipped beats. The longer I was on it the worse it got. It finally got to where I was having some beats so strong and violent.I told my cardiologist and asked to change medication or a lower dose.He told me to go back to my family doctor who prescribed it originally. As it was 6 weeks to see him, I decided to stop the tiazac. After a few days the symptoms went away.
Avatar m tn blood pressure has been up and down for the last 20 yrs taking avalide 12.5 and diltiazem 360 mgs ,but now i go on this medication terazasin only 2 mg and blood pressure goes to normal .thank you .doe anyone know why vitamin d will not come up to normal This discussion is related to Calcium levels and Vitamin D supplements.
Avatar f tn You should also get your blood cholesterol, lipid, triglyceride, blood sugar and thyroid levels checked. Please discuss this with your cardiologist. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history.
Avatar n tn I pretty much have the same thing. Do you have diabetes or high blood pressure? I was on Lisinopril and i ended up in the ER for the blood pressure medicine. It's called Paresthesia. They put me on something new. I feel a lot better but now I wonder if it's something else. It keeps me from sleeping and it wakes me up. Before when I was on Lisinopril sometimes it would fire in the same spot multiple times and i had problems walking. It has not been that bad since.
Avatar n tn Yes, that reading is quite high. When the BP is high some people can feel palpitations or pounding or pressure in chest, head, neck etc..Some people don't feel anything at all. That's why high blood pressure is called the "silent killer". Over time it damages your blood vessels all over your body. I hope you have seen a doctor for this. If not, it would be a good idea.
Avatar f tn Be careful taking diltiazem (lisinopril). I was on it for medium high blood pressure for 5 years and finally stopped taking it because it had caused deep depression, not to feelings of suicide though. It seemed to build up, so be on the lookout for feelings of not caring and hopelessness. Now I'm on Verapamil and am doing OK except for the ankle swelling. Tried another CB'er (Cartia XT or Cardizem) and had the same edema effect.
Avatar m tn What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.
Avatar f tn I would say that if your HR needed to be a little faster than 40s, then adjust metoprolol or diltiazem as your had done, but then increase the enalapril and/or telmisartan to treat the blood pressure. IF labile blood pressure is an issue, I would take enalapril twice a day (even though commonly it is a once a day med, some people metabolize it faster). Also, adding another long-acting BP medication such as amlodipine might be helpful if HR is ideal but BP still too high.
Avatar m tn My doctor seemed somewhat reluctant to add the Diltiazem but said lets try it. My Blood pressure has been around 155/95. His reluctance just seems to scare me. Should I try it or should I not? If I do start taking it should I take it with the metoprolol or at different times?
Avatar m tn The stress test was done about a week and a half ago. I got a call from the cardiologist the same day saying there were no blockages found. I am to meet with him tomorrow. The Diltiazem is to control the palpitations. My bp isn't extremely high - mild hypertension. My Dad died of a massive heart attack at the age of 54. My Mom had a mild stroke at the age of 61. I have 8 siblings - 1 brother who is on meds for high bp; a younger brother who has had 2 heart attacks by the age of 40.
Avatar m tn What seems strange to me is that Diltiazem is for angina and high blood pressure, but is only an OFF LABEL use for arrhythmias. Hence, I have noticed no change in my PVCs (perhaps even a little worse for these first 25 days on Diltiazem, and especially heavy PVCs when I first try to go to sleep at night), nor has my blood pressure been lowered.
672586 tn?1280933658 well I ran out of Lopressor so I have Cardizem I have a rapid heart rate so need something and high blood pressure and didn't get to the pharmacy in time just hope I will be ok.
Avatar n tn i have high blood pressure and been put on medication for it for some years now. now my heart rate is between 80 and 92 . the last time i was but on a beta blocker and had a very bad reaction just after one tablet dr put me on proprananol heart all over the place so came off 2 days agow hospital changed my medication and put me on another beta blocker. i am back home havent taken it as am scared stiff its bisoprolol 1.
237039 tn?1264258057 Huh, I never thought about the meds. My ears ring and tick (like a pocket watch). Sometimes it's pretty loud, sometimes it's hardly noticeable. I have noticed it's affecting my ability to hear things as well as I used to. I take Diltiazem. For some reason I thought people got ringing in the ears from high BP. Also if they take too much aspirin. I've never bothered to look it up though.
Avatar m tn Calcium channel blockers may be prescribed for people with high blood pressure (hypertension). They also reduce the workload of the heart, so they may be prescribed for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Avatar m tn I have suffered with taking diltiazem(180 mg ER) AND metoprolol (50 mg ER) for atril fibrillation for the past two and a half years. The side effects have been debilitating.. Both drugs have the same side effects and together and one or the other or both create what I can only describe as chaotic turbulence in my chest and pain in my left arm when the second drug kicks in.. My cardiolgist now wants me to add a blood thinner (xarelto) to my meds menu.
5617263 tn?1374501466 I had another bout of A-fib yesterday and went to the VA hospital ER. The doctor there did not understand why they changed my meds to diltiazem instead of upping the dose of metaprolol. He put me back on metaprolol (200 extended release pill), told me to stop the diltiazem. My blood pressure this morning was 121/74, heartbeat 71. I'm a bit dizzy at times but overall feel alright.
