Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes type 1 and joint pain

Avatar f tn I have type 1 diabetes, and have had this challenging disease for 30 years. I am believing that I may be having the first signs of some nerve damage and am wondering what doctors/specialists I sure see. Right now I have a family practioner, and have had this same doctor for years....any suggestions on where to go next? I have excellent insurance (not always the case) and want to take care of this before the situation gets worse? Help.
Avatar m tn Hi! Generally a high ANA titre indicates an autoimmune disease (SLE, Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis, scleroderma, polymyositis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, dermatomyositis, primary biliary cirrhosis, Addison disease, Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and type 1 diabetes mellitus). Mixed connective tissue disorders also cause a high ANA.
Avatar n tn is a list of symptoms, and they include many of the things your daughter is experiencing, to include stomach cramping, as well as bone and joint pain. The test for this is simple, and most endocrinologists will typically test for it once a year. If she hasn't been tested, I'd talk to your endocrinologist as soon as possible. I'll continue to look for other info for you.
Avatar n tn I am wondering if there is a connection between the narcotic pain medication and type 1. Is there any research or clinical trials investigating this connection?
Avatar n tn I've had Type I diabetes for 25 years and definitely sympathize with the pain and frustration associated with frozen shoulder. I've had frozen shoulder both on the left and right sides, at different times. The first was the right and lasted about 5 years. The pain was excruciating when reaching for things or making sudden movements.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. N-acetyl glucosamine is prescribed because of joint pain, I believe. There is no direct evidence I can find which shows a causation between n-acetyl glucosamine and lower blood sugars. Likely the lower insulin requirements you're seeing are because your son's body is under less stress, so his blood sugars are lower.
Avatar n tn Hi Dalki, Yes, in time your doctor will likely know for sure which type of diabetes you have. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2, there seems to be a type 1.5 ... tho' there's some thought that 1.5s are just in the early stages of Type 1. We DMers (folks with diabetes mellitis) and our docs often call that a honeymoon phase. I hope you're feeling better now that your bloodsugar has begun to come down. Things may remain volatile for a while, so try to be patient with yourself.
Avatar n tn I smoke basically all the time (even in school) and i have type 1 diabetes. It's affected my motivation for school and my grades have fallen slightly but all in all its not changed my life. Ive been diabetic for 13 years (since i was 3) and i still went out and got absolutely steaming. For a while i was the one who was always sick, always a state and it was great. It didnt affect my diabetes. So then i discovered weed which i liked better, could control easier and had more fun with.
Avatar n tn I have seen and treated trigger fingers as well as carpal tunnel, and other rheumatologic complications of diabetes (types 1 and 2), but no one in my hospital (a teaching hospital in the midwest) seems to know what's going on with my joints. Hurry up and wait. :) Thanks again!

Avatar n tn Between December 2002 and October 2005, 189 non-diabetic patients were treated with Peg-IFN-alpha/Riba, of whom five developed type 1 DM (2.6%), three type 2 DM (1.6%) and one an indeterminate type of DM. Classical symptoms of DM were present in three patients who developed DM shortly after cessation of Peg-IFN-alpha/Riba. In the other patients, symptoms of DM were either indistinguishable from side effects caused by Peg-IFN-alpha/Riba or absent.

Avatar n tn Recently he started having a lot of joint pain. Now his ankles and feet are swelling. His sugar levels are doing great. We have been to the doctor and he has had several test done. Everything is coming back good. Has anyone had these same symptoms? He is taking Metformin and I am wondering if this has anything to do with this.
Avatar n tn "I was diagnosed with diabetes last year" Controlling and managing your diabetes is an important step in avoiding other health risks, something you have not told us about so we cannot help you unless you provide us with more information. Have you spoken with or seen a doctor? Your symptoms mimic an internal infection that is worsening. You're not going to find an answer nor a cure on any health forums, only from a thorough medical evaluation by a doctor.
Avatar m tn Hi! Generally a high ANA titre indicates an autoimmune disease (SLE, Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis, scleroderma, polymyositis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, dermatomyositis, primary biliary cirrhosis, Addison disease, Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and type 1 diabetes mellitus). Mixed connective tissue disorders also cause a high ANA. What is important is the pattern of ANA staining: homogenous, speckled, or nucleolar.
Avatar n tn I also noted the JAMA reminder/caution that food does not cause Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. This study and others looked at the impact of specific foods/timing of introduction in at-risk children. Please know that Type 2 is a completely different disease than Type 1. Type 1 is autoimmune, and researchers are striving to find out what triggers (or doesn't) trigger the disease. Type 2 has completely different origins.
Avatar n tn I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1? Hearing the words Juvenile Diabetes associated with Type 1 throws me off obviously because I was not diagnosed as a juvenile. But also the words Insulin Dependent are associated with the Type 1. So I DO fit into that category.
Avatar f tn I recently was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, will I ever be able to eat whatever I want again? If so, how long do you think that will be, I miss my chocolate!!
Avatar f tn Yes. Someone with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily and monitor and control their blood sugars very well if they are to stay alive and avoid complications of diabetes.
