469720 tn?1388149949 Although we have made substantial progress in the development of medications to combat the causes of CVD like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes; the rapid proliferation of these diseases virtually negates and medical benefit. In other words, we are treating the consequences, not the cause.
Avatar m tn Avoid taking supplements containing vitamin E or other antioxidant vitamins (beta-carotene, vitamin C) immediately before and following angioplasty without the supervision of a health care professional. These vitamins seem to interfere with proper healing. Diabetes: Vitamin E might increase the risk for heart failure in people with diabetes. People with diabetes should avoid high doses of vitamin E.

Avatar m tn Extended Follow-Up of HALT-C Study Shows Some Benefit of Interferon Bob Roehr November 7, 2010 (Boston, Massachusetts) — The utility of maintenance pegylated interferon (PegIFN) therapy to prevent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with advanced chronic hepatitis has been a contentious matter for some time. The pendulum has swung from support for the idea to early evidence of a lack of efficacy.
1097839 tn?1344583542 The test is painless (you're already drawing blood for FT4 and TSH anyway). The test is also cheap (about $10 for me after my health insurance "discount"). Why not test insteatd of assuming???
Avatar m tn I know my own Hepa says he rarely prescribes Neup unless the ANC was extremely low combined with the patient having other health factors, specifically diabetes (which may increase chance of infection ) Possibly I have missed something ,on why some doctors are often prescibe this and if any one"s doctor has explained why they are quick to add this to the soup I would appreciate the info. Possibly it is the diabetes??
Avatar m tn Let me also say that I also have high blood pressure, controlled type 2 diabetic (non insulin), Fibromyalgia and have had a major lumbar spine fusion with instruments. I have a VERY detailed job as I work for a regulated utility company and I am on the phone all day (usually 10-11 hrsr a day) doing sales and service- it is very very stressful, my job classification is the only job classification that actually has paid STRESS LEAVE!!
492869 tn?1285022533 Add to that the constant nausea that many face which discourages *chugging* beverages, and any additional dehydration that may come from bouts of vomiting or diarrhea and the utility of saline IVs becomes rather obvious. This may be TMI, but my final note here is that despite everything I drink (4 L a day!), I swear my pee is so concentrated it smells like cat pee most of the time! Ewww!! I don't know WHERE all the fluids I drink go, but I need MORE! And now I'm making kidney stones!
Avatar n tn I also meant to say, I am not in favor of the use of steroids it can lead to many health issues including diabetes for kitties... along with a change in diet another thing you can sure try is Omega3 fatty acids...add to the wet food, these are excellent for any skin condition...especially dryness...
Avatar n tn He said the medication (I am presuming from what I have read that he referred to levodopa) can cause long-term side effects, such as involuntary movements, and seemed to suggest that the longer we held off, the better. He said mother's overall health indicated that she would probably live long enough for the long-term side effects to affect her. Mother, who is already taking a number of medications for congestive heart failure, opted to delay treatment for the time being.

Avatar m tn I'd also like to invite members to provide links to any scientific data they have seen that either supports or questions the utility of TSH, or FT3, or FT4. ___________________________________ by Super_sally888 , Nov 29, 2010 07:14AM Hello, the correct dose of thyroid is different from person to person. It sounds that 25 mcg is too low. I don't know if 75 mcg is suitable. To tell, you need to take that dose consistently for at least 4 - 6 weeks and then test TSH, FT3, and FT4.
Avatar m tn My blood glucose, which had been trending up prior to treatment, has returned to a very healthy normal since the end of treatment. (Hep C can cause Type II Diabetes.) So my liver seems to be improving in terms of function. Is it Stage 0 fibrosis? I doubt it. But it seems to be functioning fine and that is good.
4896357 tn?1360674504 Everything changes next year regarding health care in the USA and they want to force me to purchase health insurance but I am tapped out. In your opinions is 1.3 too low and at what number am I at the critical point? I'm planning to take that next full dose of interferon and that should be about the time I can start the Neupogen shots. Does Neupogen build up the WBC count and how long does it take? Is my doctor being too cautious?
Avatar n tn The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a component of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, conducts and supports approximately 90 percent of U.S. research on the causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of alcohol abuse, alcoholism, and alcohol problems and disseminates research findings to science, practitioner, policy making, and general audiences.
Avatar f tn I also spoke with Gilead because I could not find a doctor to give me a prescription for Sovaldi and Olysio and Gilead is not able to help you without a prescription from a doctor and a denial from insurance. I moved from Oklahoma to Oregon for better health care. Sadly, I chose the wrong state but that is another story. :) Anyway, in Norman and Oklahoma City none of the private doctors would treat 1a patients except for one group who had a 6-month wait list just to see a doctor.
Avatar m tn Conventional clinical, demographic, and environmental prognostic factors have fairly limited utility for early identification of patients who will respond to treatment. Dr. Younossi and colleagues performed mRNA profiling using six housekeeping genes and 317 mRNA transcripts from 160 genes. They performed logistic regression analysis to identify genes associated with response to therapy. They also evaluated patterns of gene expression in patients before and during treatment.
1425146 tn?1282765484 Doing this would go a long way to increasing the utility of blood testing. Also, studies have shown that FT3 correlates best with hypo symptoms, while FT4 and TSH did not correlate at all. If FT3 and FT4 testing were adopted as the primary tests, I think the biggest remaining obstacle to having reliable blood testing would be the current reference ranges for FT3 and FT4. These ranges have never been corrected as was done for TSH over 8 years ago.
1130586 tn?1316269892 One interesting of note, this alternative was also supposed to help with other problems, including diabetes. My mother, who is borderline diabetic, took the treatment when I did (I think she did it just to help support me), and her next dr. visit the doctor was amazed at her lab reports, saying there was a great deal of improvement, and that she wouldn't be classified diabetic by those results. Anyway, I don't regret doing it. I don't think it hurt any.
Avatar n tn sounds like you have had your share of health issues as well. I am sure it is aggravating to have so many tests done and not have a diagnosis. It helps to know someone understands. I have had 1 doctor, 1 pa, and 1 physical therapist all tell me I have them a little stumped. I hope you find out what your condition is involving your foot....I will keep referring to this, so you can let me know if you ever get a final diagnosis. Thanks again!!!
Avatar m tn Can you post more about your health and how your other labs look. The Fibrosure is only one possible indicator of cirrhosis. There are biochemical markers such as platelets, INR and the like - that may or may not be apparent. That your doctor would like to leap into treatment without more data is unsettling. I know if I were treatment naive and I had the CC IL28B allele I would at least ask about Victrelis.
Avatar n tn Look at the studies every week implicating a new disease, or manifestation to HCV. This week, the articles on Diabetes, and the continuing evidence of a link to HCV. Have a nice day all of you!!!
181575 tn?1250202386 I thought about putting them on a seaprate Health Page but didn't think it was appropriate since we didn't write them. Let's make this a sort of "Unofficial Research Thread" or "URT" for this type of information. Let's keep this URT free of comments. For comments, start a new thread indicating that it's in reference to URT. We'll see how it goes.
Avatar n tn Take my word for it, I've been there and I've had to detox myself because the doctors refused to help me get off. My health has suffered so much that now I'm on permanent disability. My prayers are with all of you. God bless you all.
Avatar m tn No side effects, and costs only $30 per month without health insurance - the only possible downside is that it may not cure your incurable disease. People are using it for cancer, Crohn's, MS, fibromyalgia, autism, and all other autoimmune diseases. For hep c LDN will not eradicate the virus, but it will reduce the viral load levels and inflammation drastically and keep them there. Meanwhile, many naturopaths do the IV lipoic acid treatments - they do not have to be MDs to do so.
Avatar n tn I know you don't have insurance, but priorities are priorities, and if you're gaining weight DAILY your health is at grave risk. Money is only money. Your life is worth more than that. Best wishes. I hope it works out for you.
Avatar f tn I had upper and lower jaw surgery 3 years ago and my health has never been the same. I was given 4 plates and screws in the mandible and maxilla and got the same story about the bioavailability of titanium, but I question it. I have done some moderate research over the last few months and I found one excellent study about a very small percentage of patients having significant health systems since receiving Ti implants.
