Avatar f tn DHEA-sulfate test measures the amount of DHEA-sulfate in the blood. DHEA-sulfate is a weak male hormone (androgen) produced by the adrenal gland in men and women. If your levels are high, you may have the unwanted side affects of excess hair or other male characteristics. This is something to follow with PCOS.
Avatar n tn I am a 25 year old female, I had a saliva hormone kit evaluated with testosterone, DHEA, estradiol, and progesterone, also progesterone/estradiol ratio done. The results came back as this, Estradiol- normal Progesterone- Low; 47.2 (range of 127-446) Ratio of Progesterone to estradiol - 33.0 Low; (range of 200-600) Testosterone- 83.5 High; (range of 6.0-49) DHEA- 366.7 High- (range of 106-300) I can tell that i have way higher 'male hormones' than the women's hormones but, why?
Avatar m tn I am 27 years old, male and I feel I have hormone problems but despite years of doctors visits and research I cannot figure it out. The problem is I cannot afford the trial and error method of dr.'s tests and visits so maybe someone can give me a bullseye to aim for. OK here are my symptoms, (hold your breath) I have night sweats that soak the bed sometimes especialy if i go to be with the blanket over me, I get hot easy at night. I dont sleep well.
Avatar f tn i would be very careful about taking a hormone like DHEA without advice from your doctor. unless you have a deficiency, taking additional hormones can really mess up your system. if you have not seen a fertility specialist, you should consider it since it has been a year.
401095 tn?1351391770 t started on the DHEA yet....but plan to pick some up tomorrow....funny thing about DHEA, it IS a hormone, but with all other hormones in our body, we can't just go to a GNC or a Walgreens or Wal-Mart and buy the hormone....yet with DHEA, we can....odd, i know....even the doctor agreed with that one...but that's why you have to be careful and typically only supplement with that hormone after consulting with a doctor...you really have to know WHY you need to replace it in your body....
Avatar m tn Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is hormone that is naturally produced in our bodies and decreases after the age of 30. It serves as a pre-curser for the sex hormones, androgen and estrogen. There is evidence in support of the use of DHEA for help with adrenal insufficiency, depression, and lupus; however; there are no studies of long term effects. DHEA may increase the risk of prostate, breast, or any hormone sensitive cancers and it is recommended only to be taken under the supervision of a MD.
766586 tn?1284383198 t have my FSH tested between IVFs but I did start taking DHEA two months prior to the second IVF(and human growth hormone during actual stimulation) and the dr said the embryos looked much better this time around.
1287560 tn?1272216521 Hello can anywhen give any knowledge on these hormone levels, my dr is away till thursday and they're bizarre. 12182312 tn?1427683956 it just seems odd that it is the only hormone off. DHEA converts to T and E, so they need to investigate further - and keep in mind that that there are many forms of T (they usually run just one) and there is the binding hormone and more they can look at, so another opinion may be warranted.
Avatar f tn Dhea is a precursor hormone so are they going to test estrogen, testosterone and see if you have an androgen issue? Or a pituitary issue? It is produced in the adrenals so they can do more testing, and keep an eye on it. But just the one test does not tell you much. You need more testing.
Avatar f tn Hi STP, What crazy timing, this is the first day for me on these forums, and I have also been looking into DHEA and its role in hormonal balance. DHEA is a hormone, actually. I would strongly, strongly advise you to first get your DHEA, cortisol and progesterone levels tested by a doc who knows what they're doing. Here in the States you can buy DHEA supplements off the shelf but they may or may not be right for you, even if you could get your hands on them!
Avatar n tn My husband takes 50mg a day - in an earlier post I described how he decided to discontinue his prescribed testosterone shots, and how we researched supplements that might help him succeed and improve his natural hormone levels. DHEA is a precursor hormone to many other, so we included that one. His testosterone level is now in the normal range. Soooo, it seems to work for HIM, at any rate.
Avatar n tn What are possible causes for an abnormal increase in DHEA to several times normal range in a young male of about 26? (The change is accompanied by an enlarged thyroid.
Avatar m tn ” It is produced in the testes and adrenal gland by way of a complex metabolic process that involves the breakdown of cholesterol A hormone called DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), which is broken down into testosterone and estrogen. DHEA has properties of its own that benefit both men and women. Men maintain their highest levels of this hormone in their early 20s. By age 50 there is a 50% drop in DHEA, and by age 60 a man possesses only one-third the level he had as a young man.
Avatar n tn How long have you been on the supplements? Your body might need a little time to adjust, since dhea is an adrenal hormone, and it interacts with other hormones. Of course, DHEA is touted to be a treatment for depression so maybe something else is being affected, such as blood sugar. You might try lowering the amount of the supplement to start with. I have no personal experience with dhea, but if you are depleted in this, don't give up on the supplement just yet.
Avatar f tn Are you asking how to counteract DHEA? DHEA is a precursor hormone - they need to test your LH, FSH, testosterones, estrogens etc. to see how they are - that is what DHEA effects.
Avatar n tn Okay Ladies, My doctors just called and I indeed do have low dhea - Anyone else heard or experience this problem. I would love to hear some people who have experience with this or have heard about it. I have had 3 miscarriages and now hav not been pregnant for 3 1/2 years could this be the cause????
944903 tn?1269268918 I had my DHEA sulfate levels measured in June and they were below the limits of the lab (<15 for a range of 32-240) and my free testosterone was almost 0 (both results point to a probable adrenals problem), I took no medication (I was working on stabilizing my thyroid first)... and I got pregnant in August! So not sure if all of these specific hormone levels really matter!
Avatar f tn Before taking any DHEA, you probably should have your DHEA levels checked. I had mine checked and I am very severely deficient in DHEA-sulfate (it's an adrenal glands problem). I took a little bit of synthetic DHEA at some points, 25 unit, got no side effects but I do know that it can give cancer so I was reluctant to take it so I stopped it.
Avatar f tn You might want to try a compounded, sublingual dhea at very low doses. Dhea is a very powerful hormone, not taken without knowing if you are indeed low, and certainly not to be taken at high doses. You could cause damage to your adrenal glands and have severe consequences in the future as you enter menopause. Find a very experienced functional medicine doctor to support you as you seek to balance your hormones.
4274823 tn?1388529098 DHEA is a precursor for male and female hormones. Levels, typically, start declining after the age of 30. Supplementing too much can theoretically increase the risk of prostate, breast, ovarian, and other hormone-sensitive cancers. Many doctors won't test DHEA and even more don't believe in adrenal insufficiency.
1065748 tn?1255876527 Here is what to consider when considering DHEA supplementation. Since DHEA is close to the top of the hormone chain as you can see in the chain below, it can effect many hormones down the line.
Avatar f tn My Doctor has diagnosed me with reverse T3 and oestrogen dominence and has put me on progesterone to balance the oestrogen, t3 for my thyroid and Dhea (as I am low in DHEA and Testosterone) as he says it will be used, and if necessary by body will convert what it needs to Testosterone. However I just read an article which states Hashi patients often convert DHEA to Oestrogen which exasperates Oestrogen dominence. Has anyone ever heard of this?
Avatar n tn I've read mixed reports about DHEA in cases of unexplained infertility. I've also read that there are longer-term health concerns about the use of DHEA and experts are warning against it. I haven't found any really useful trials or scientific papers about this so I'd be interested in people's feedback.
1314782 tn?1323180585 DHEA-S was markedly low: 62 (195-600) What is the clinical significance of a markedly low DHEA-S (i.e. what areas would cross your mind to check (ex:adrenal glands........) Other hormones ok LH/FSH. Have not had any other test such as cortisol, ATCH. MRI of brain: Normal CT of abnormal and pelvis: Normal CBC w.
590177 tn?1288425854 DHEA is a totally different hormone. DHEA does not serve the same function as cortisol. One cannot live without cortisol, however DHEA is not necessary. DHEA converts to estrogen and testosterone. If you are getting more facial hair, increasing DHEA may not be ideal as it may increase your testosterone. HC is kinda a weird thing - too much and too little makes for fatigue. Time of day taking it can be a huge factor as well. It cycles in a normal person.
