Diabetes Insipidus is not the normal type of diabetes that can be controlled by food or by medications like metformin or insulin. Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 are those that are controlled by food and or medications like metformin or insulin.
Diabetes Insipidus is a rare condition and nothing to do with the the pancreas and production of insulin or lack of it. A blood sugar monitor will be of no use to someone with Diabetes Insipidus.
Wow, I was in the same situation (only I use the pills, not the nasal spray which I think is safer). I had benign brain tumor removed, and right after that i went to the bathroom every 15 minutes! I've been on this medicine for 16 years only to find out now my endo doesn't think I have diabetes insipidus! He said sometimes it's only temporary that you need the desmopressin after brain surgery, from the trauma.
t need my ddavp pill anymore is because he said my sodium level has never went low (I think he said it gets either extremely low or high when you have diabetes insipidus). I guess your vet is suggesting using the DDAVP (Desmopressin) inhaler as eyedrops. From what I can tell, this stuff runs about $78 a bottle (less if you get more than one bottle).
I am kind of confused as to why you are being prescribed DAVPP for nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, because that's usually prescribed for CENTRAL Diabetes Insipidus, caused when the pituitary gland doesn't secrete enough ADH.
I am 6 weeks post op after a transphenoidal pituitary resection of a non functioning non secreting pituitary macroadenoma (2mm). I still have diabetes insipidus and almost zero testosterone. They say there are different types of diabetes insipidus, basically that the kidneys are doing what they are supposed to do or a pituitary issue.
If the levels are so low and potassium levels are high maybe a creatinine clearance test should be done to test the condition of the kidney and rule out diabetes insipidus. CPK or creatinine phosphokinase and liver enzymes should be done if there is muscle wasting. Diabetes insipidus can also cause whole body edema. Hello~First, your friend needs to be examined by the GP, there could be some reasons for this such as Diabetes, urinary track issues, infections, or other issues with the kidneys and/or bladder.
There is a drug called Desmopressin (DDAVP) it reduces urine production at night. But drinking too much liquid with the medication can cause problems, and Desmopressin should be avoided if you have symptoms such as a fever, diarrhea or nausea.
Diabetes insipidus(water diabetes) is due to a hormone lacking that helps us hold onto water, these children will urinate excessively, drink excessively, lose weight and be sick with high sodiums, there is a form due to the pituitary hormone lacking and that which is due to the kidney not responding to the normal hormone.
It does not sound like repeated fevers alone is diabetes insipidus.

How old is your son? You should look into Diabetes Insipidus. My daughter is having similar issues and thats what we are currently testing for. I also havent ruled out regular diabetes either, even though they've not found her sugar to be high. Does your son's breath sometimes smell like nail polish remover?
The thirst/pee cycle is indicative of diabetes insipidus (water diabetes) and needs to be controlled. Keep drinking.
My best guess is that you have a possible/probably pituitary issue, and sadly, nothing OTC - and no adrenal support supplement is going to help - it will just muddy up the testing. DHEA converts to testosterone and estrogen. As you did not get those tested, and your cortisol was normal with a normal rhythm, my worry would be the DI and you need to see a doctor.
Does he seem to drink water constantly and cannot go anywhere without water? If so, it could be diabetes insipidus, which is VERY different than diabetes mellitis (Type 1 or Type 2).
If not, then it could be a number of things, such as an enlarged prostrate or something else impinging on the bladder and creating a sensation of needing to go, even if the bladder is empty. It could be a problem with the nerves or muscles that connect to and control the bladder.
It's a flag for diabetes. The term diabetes insipidus comes from the Greek word for "fountain". As thyroidian suggested it could also be prostate, but he is a bit young.
He needs an hba1c test.
