Common Questions and Answers about Concussion in older people

concussion

Avatar n tn Yeah, I'm not sure she actually had a "concussion" when she fell - I don't think they diagnosed her with that, because she didn't lose consciousness, etc. But one of the things I've read in the last few days is that with older people, the whole syndrome is actually more likely when they didn't lose consciousness. Weird. I appreciate your advice about watching her closely.
Avatar n tn m older? Trust me when I was in high school I loved football with every ounce in my body, I loved to nail people as hard as I could, but now that I've quit playing I deeply regret ever playing, because now all I want to do is be able to grow old and enjoy my family. Hopefully God will bless me, I feel as if he already has in the sense that I decided not to play college football. I hope you make the right choice.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar f tn The setback has come from extra stimulus rooted in stress caused by confllicts in the work environment with other people (This type of conflict is now very difficult for me to cope with moreso than ever before). The stimulus causes the intensity of my headaches to increase abruptly in magnitude. And I either shutdown from my blood pressure dropping or a shutdown following an emotionally ehuasting meltdown during which I become very confused and fearful.
Avatar m tn Usually people recover from a concussion without any residual effects. Some people may manifest the symptoms longer and the condition is termed as post concussion syndrome. Repeated concussions are known to double the risk. After a concussion, the levels of brain chemicals are altered. It usually takes about a week for these levels to stabilize again. However, the time it takes to recover from a concussion is variable, so avoid all strenuous activity till complete recovery.
Avatar n tn She then attempted to vomit unsuccesfully many times before fading in and out of concsiousness. Is that concussion or is it more serious??

Avatar m tn AND before we knew about the seriousness of injuries to the brain. There is a reason why in sports today that people need to pass concussion protocol tests before they are allowed to return to activity. I suppose I'm trying to relate this to sports as you talked about boxing.
Avatar m tn Can a person who is concussed and reports no LOC actually be experiencing a LOC at that time? I was concussed and was diagnosed with a Moderate Concussion in the ER and have no recollection of anything during that time. Is all this possible?
Avatar m tn I also hit the back of my head and had a severe concussion and brain contusion (bruising of brain) 1 year 10 months ago and still suffering with 24/7 dizziness, stuffy head, ringing in ears etc., When it comes to Post concussion syndrome it is really a collections of many many symptoms and confusing. You are only 3 weeks away so it may be too early to call it and most people recover within few weeks or months. I am the unlucky one.
Avatar f tn I personally talked to few people with concussion/TBI and they all went through depression, suicidal thoughts and at some point got out of it. Good luck.

Avatar n tn How are you feeling now? Have you seen a doctor about this? It almost sounds like you may have gotten a concussion besides injuring your shoulder. Because of the headaches, difficultly with memory, trouble concentrating, nausea, feeling "fuzzy," sleep changes, visual changes, I suggest you get checked out by a doctor, preferably a neurologist if you can...otherwise your PCP.
Avatar m tn Hello, my name is Dylan, I am 12, and new to this website. So, for the past few years, I haven't been feeling very well the second I get in a car. I have had this feeling ever since my concussion in 2011. My head just gets an unexplainable feeling, like my brain is just... numb? I don't get lightheaded or feel like I'm going to pass out, but I do feel like I'm going to throw up. I have done tons of research on it, but have not found anything.
Avatar m tn I hit my head on the ice about 12 hours ago. ER said concussion. I have not had any of the symptoms the ER said I should return for but where the lump was there is now a soft spot. Should I return?
Avatar f tn I am a concussion survivor. Could you get a concussion if your head stops suddenly from a fast movement? Yesterday I was in a hurry and running and pushed the door in front of me. It stopped abruptly which caused my body to stop too. Could this cause a concussion? I'm scared because I am recovering from a concussion already. Does it make me more prone to brain injury? Please, help me!
Avatar f tn Had a concussion several weeks ago with instant headache & nausea which have gotten worse. Already had 2 CT scans without contrast, showing they were normal. The headaches and nausea are pretty bad daily, have gotten worse since the concussion. I'm now scheduled for an MRI scan, should I do it with or without contrast. Have read so many negative things about getting it with the contrast.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for your question. After head injury or impact such kind of symptoms like loss of smell or taste and other symptoms may be common due to extent of damaged part of brain and may remain symptomatic or progress in future. Although any sure success cure can not be assured in such cases, but symptomatic relief or it may decrease with period of time, physiotherapy, avoiding any triggering factors and life style modification help you in certain extent.
Avatar f tn Sounds like you might have a concussion. A concussion is a mild brain injury caused by a knock or blow to the head or a sudden change in motion. See a doctor just in case.
12128836 tn?1423574148 In emergency medicine a concussion in itself is not very dangerous. But a hard hit to the head can also cause a bleeding in the brain which is extremely dangerous and often fatal. Most times you just get a concussion and no brain bleeding. An extreme hit like from a car crash can cause the brain to swell and the pressure in the skull to increase which will lead to brain damage, maybe coma and possibly death. This is also unlikely.
602261 tn?1252583158 I suffered a pretty serious concussion yesterday aside from that tonight is shot night and I only have five shots left. I do have a call into the Dr's office right now but I'm looking for some hint of what to do in the mean time. I know that sometimes when you have a cocussion you are not supposed to take medicine but last night I did take my trazadone to sleep and my riba before bed.
Avatar m tn Light sensitivity often (not always) indicates bleeding in the brain, which is in addition to the concussion. More bad news. You will probably have problems from neck pain about another six months down the line. Basically it's watchful waiting, but you really need an MRI and an MRA. I hope things work out alright.
Avatar m tn Just as helpful as the doctor. Everyone makes me feel like "freak of nature", on this site, and people in my life. So maybe I am, and that what I'll accept. I'll see my new doctor and have some hope, but not counting on it, Florida doctors are the worst. That's for the help but good by to all, I am more confident and comfortable in my world. Take a good look at your site.
