Measuring the efficacy of PEP is very difficult and large studies are underway. Combivir is likely effective and whether other regimens are more effective is unknown and, I suspect,, will not be known for some time, waiting on completion of the trial underway
That said, the regimen you are on is among those that is recommended. At this time there is no benefit to be derived from adding a 3rd drug.
I had many exposures, unprotected vaginal sex, to someone who had hiv, i did not know at the time. I had a test 12-13 weeks after exposure and was negative, but I took combivir for 3 weeks 4 weeks after the exposure. Do you think the timing I took the medication had an affect on my antibody test, since I took it at a time that I could have been seroconverting.
So today I went back to my phyisician and insisted that he adds Kaletra to the PEP
combo. My argument was that there was pre-cum and other discharge in my mouth during my giving oral and that was an exposure.
Now I am frustrated because I had begun taking Combivir-alone at 10 hours post exposure and I only added Kaletra in at 56 hours post-exposure.
Really I do not get why doc did not gave me the full drug combination, Combivir+Kaletra, at the intial 10 hour mark.
Hello I ran into an incident last night and ended up having unprotected sexual intercourse with a stipper. I started the first dose of Combivir last night and was wondering if the side effects get too bad and I cannot take it for the full 28 days, what I should do. They cannot get any other PEP prophylaxis treatments besides the Combivir and was really worried about the side effects of this medication, as I am already feeling nauseated.
I of course freaked out thinking it was an ARS symptom so he changed my regimen to Combivir and Insentress. He initially wanted me to wait three days to restart (I have been on the previous combo since Jan 17th, so a little over a week). He said that waiting three days wouldnt reduce the efficeiency of the PEP and i think he was afraid that since I am having a reaction i shoudl wait to introduce a new drug.

Also there was some inconsistency in terms of which medicines I was taking. Day 1-4 combivir with kaletra, day 5-6 only combivir and day 7-10 combivir with tenofovir. So far I've been taking pep for 10 days so far and the side effects are really bad especially nausea. It's been really rough time and I feel like I can't handle the medicine anymore..feel really sick from it.
