Clarithromycin vs penicillin

Common Questions and Answers about Clarithromycin vs penicillin

biaxin

Avatar f tn Hi Suzy, clarithromycin is in a different family of antibiotics than penicillin, so there is a chance that you have a strain of Strep resistant to pen but susceptible to clarithromycin. Since your doctor is the one that examined you and has your full history, I would continue with that until you follow up, if that was the suggestion. Ibuprofen/acetaminophen and lots of fluids will give some symptomatic relief too.
Avatar n tn Other options include cephalosporins such as cefpodoxime proxetil (Vantin) and cefuroxime (Ceftin). In patients allergic to beta-lactams, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim), clarithromycin (Biaxin), and azithromycin. So, if you are allergic to the penicillin group your doctor could have prescribed Bactrim for you. Regards.
Avatar f tn Treating the infection helps reduce the risk of the ulcer returning. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic and clarithromycin is a macrolide-type antibiotic. They work by stopping the growth of bacteria. The antibiotics in this product treat only bacterial infections. I can understand why your mom is skeptical but this is a very serious condition that must be addressed right away. If left untreated serious life threatening conditions can develop.
Avatar m tn prescribed the triple therapy which consists of Lanzoprazole 30 mg, Amoxicillin 500 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg. The problem is that she told me to take only one pill of amoxicillin (500mg) every 12 hours but it was supposed to be two pills (1g) according to FDA and other resources. I am very concerned because I know that this bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics. What should I do?, How long do I wait before I take another test to see if the bacteria is gone or not?
Avatar n tn I have found that biaxin is chemically different than azithromycin but biologically same at killing bacteria as azithromycin. On some post you say that azithromycin or clarithromycin(biaxin) would cure all the bacterial stds then in others you state that there could be some problems. by H. Hunter Handsfield, M.D., Jun 11, 2007 12:00AM Directly to your questions: 1) Both azithromycin and penicillin are 100% effective in curing incubating syphilis.
Avatar n tn I have just competed a course of clarithromycin, and continue to have nausea, salivation, and a gnawing feeling in my stomach. These symptoms are very similar to those I had while pregnant, ie morning sickness, but all day. I finished the drug 3 days ago. Will these symptoms ever stop?
Avatar f tn I've just got back from my doctor, I have an infected ingrown hair and need antibiotics. I can't take penicillin as I'm allergic, so he was trying to find an alternative. He has prescribed clarithromycin 500mg twice a day. He told me they are only harmful in the first trimester but NHS says that they should only be used as a last resort if there is no other medicine and the pros outweigh the cons. Anyone had this medicine and gone on to have a healthy baby? Thanks in advance.
Avatar m tn After failing to fight off the cough myself I saw my local doctor 6 weeks ago, who prescribed Vibramycin-D (doxycycline) (1 weeks worth) because I’m allergic to penicillin. This has cleared up my infection the last two times I have taken it but this time I was still left with a persistent cough. The cough came on from my feeling that there’s water in my throat so I cough to bring it up (very little if no phlegm).
Avatar m tn Clarithromycin isn't the treatment of choice for any STD. However, it would effectively prevent most cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). But not all. Antibiotics, including clarithromycin, have no effect on viruses and therefore cannot prevent herpes, HPV, or HIV.
Avatar n tn Sure, there are lots of antibiotics. If you're allergic to azithromycin, you also probably can't take clarithromycin and erythromycin. And if doxycycline doesn't work, there's probably no used in taking tetracycline. So that does eliminate a lot of them. If the doxycycline isn't working, either your tests are consistently false positives, or you have a resistant strain. It's not typical, but it does happen.
Avatar f tn So, had brief encounter with sex worker. I am a male and she a female, just for clarity and accuracy of response though I'm confident that this is irrelevant. In any case, I received oral sex lasting only a couple minutes then shortly after completed with handjob. Anyway, that night I had extreme regrets as this not something I regularly do, only once before. So in my anxious state, I thought it best to be proactive and see if I could prevent any full infection from developing.
Avatar f tn I've been sick since Novemeber, so it's been about 4 months now, but it didn't get bad until about Jan. My symptoms started out as a simple cold, coughing sneezing mild fever and a sore throat. At first I was given amoxocillin to treat what they assumed was strep (a throat swab was never done), after the meds I felt better but a week later felt worse then ever. I then was given more antibiotics because they then assumed it was a sinus infection and I needed strong antibiotics.
Avatar f tn Hi All, Iam having a terrible toothache the dentist said it is my wisdom tooth growing below my other tooth. She prescribed penicillin due to infections and I have a fever. Avatar m tn I read the CDC guideline to treat NS is 4 x daily IV penicillin for 10-14 days OR intramuscular penicillin 2.4 (penicillin shots) AND 4x Probenecid 500mg everyday for 10-14 days. Consistently, I have found a thread of a person here undergoing the above mentioned outpatient treatment for his NS (surprisingly his titer was also 1:64 to begin with!) but that person was the only one I could find online. Many thanks again!
Avatar m tn I got infected about 3 weeks ago with Gonorrhea of the throat i had a mild sore throat and just thought it was tonsillitis since i suffer from it a lot i just went to a STD clinic and told me i have Gonorrhea in the throat and since i am extremely allergic to penicillin they gave me 2 gm of Azithromycin to take in a single dose which i did today. Now, since yesterday i have been experiencing some joint discomfort and sever non-stop tingling all over my body. My question is could this be DGI?
Avatar f tn As fas as I know, nexium (esomeprazole) only interferes with biaxin (clarithromycin). It heightens the amount of esomeprazole by inhibiting the degradation of esomeprazole. Macrobid is nitrofurantoin, not clarithromycin. You may also look here: http://www.ehealthme.com/drug_interactions_side_effects/Nexium-2792078.
Avatar f tn I took 1500mg of Clarithromycin ER, and 1875mg of Amoxicillin that night. The following morning took another 1gm of the Niacin ER & 1375mg of Amoxicillin.
1464587 tn?1307491605 s reaction to generic vs brand name meds, such as Biaxin/clarithromycin, but there are some instances when it can occur because of tiny differences between the specific chemical structure of the two medications. I'm puzzled that your doc doesn't seem to be jumping on this situation and trying different meds in case it IS this specific drug you are reacting to. And also I'm puzzled that he doesn't switch you to another antibiotic altogether.
