Clarithromycin for chlamydia

Common Questions and Answers about Clarithromycin for chlamydia

Avatar m tn Clarithromycin isn't the treatment of choice for any STD. However, it would effectively prevent most cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). But not all. Antibiotics, including clarithromycin, have no effect on viruses and therefore cannot prevent herpes, HPV, or HIV.
Avatar m tn I am a straight male. On the 13th of December, I went to see a urologist as I had had some UTI-type symptoms for a week or so (I didn't suspect Chlamydia or any STD for that matter at the time, as I have had few sexual partners, and always use condoms - also not a big fan of receiving oral sex).
Avatar m tn d just finished a week course of clarithromycin for a chest infection. The doctor said that this drug could have cleared up a chlamydia infection if I'd had one.
Avatar n tn The clarithromycin would be preventative.curative for sure for chlamydia and NGU and probably work for gonorrhea and syphilis although there may be occasional (rare) problems with them.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the Forum As I read your post, your only unprotected exposure was performing oral sex on one of your partners. This would not cause either the urinary tract or anal symptoms that you have noted. When condoms are applied prior to sex and do not break, condom protected sex is safe sex and not associated with meaningful risk for infection. (Incidentally, if the condoms used appeared intact following sex, they were- when condoms fail they break wide open.
Avatar m tn ployri bacterial infection, so I was taking 2000mg of amoxicillin a day and 1500mg of clarithromycin (bactrim) for a course of 7 days. The girl I had sex with contacted me yesterday to tell me she has been diagnosed with chlamydia. If I did catch this first of all would this medication have cured me? Also, I had urinalysis dipsticks in the house and tested myself to see if I had UTI symptoms caused by possible chlamydia (white blood cells in urine, nitrates, etc) and it was all clear.
Avatar n tn The next week my doctor switched me to clarithromycin for my throat. 27 days after the encounter while still taking clarithromycin for my throat infection, I began to have symptoms for chlamydia/gonorrhea. I have not had any discharge or pain/burning while urinating but I have had pain/tickle in my urethra after urination along with pain while driving?? I went to my doctor and he swabbed me for a test for which he has not received the results from yet.
Avatar m tn Clarithromycin (Biaxin in the US) is chemically similar to azithromycin (Zithromax), one of the standard drugs for several STDs. Although it has not been studied extensively against STDs, it undoubtedly is effective in either treating or preventing all the infections that respond to azithromycin. In the dose you were give, you were protected from chlamydia, nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), gonorrhea, and probably syphilis.
Avatar f tn Hi, if your concerned about chlamydia get tested 7 days post exposure and Clarithromycin is an antibiotic so it may have a positive effect on chlamydia but you would need to talk to you doctor about this as depends on dosage.
Avatar n tn The test for gonorrhea and chlamydia was meaningless because you had received clarithromycin plus the penicillin or amoxicillin. If you had been infected, the antibiotics would have cured it. Your wife's sore throat doesn't change my opinion or advice. You never were infected with anything.
Avatar m tn m a 21 year old male, I had sex a few times with a girl who I just found out has chlamydia, however, I began heavy antibiotic treatment for the cure of Helicobacter pylori (amoxicillin 2g a day, clarithromycin, etc), and I only had sex with her once while taking this treatment, and had 4 days left. Would this treatment have cured my chlamydia if I caught it??? What are the chances I still have it?? ps. I have no symptoms, and this was around 2 weeks ago...
Avatar n tn 3 days after the event I had a sinus infection and was prescribed 500mg er Clarithromycin for 7 days. While on that antibiotic I was bit by a a fire ant and the bite became infected so 100mg twice a day for 7 days. I was on antibiotic treatment for 17days straight.(doesn't it usually take longer than that for a lesion to occur for transmission?
Avatar n tn It came back positive for Chlamydia. I have been treated for this now 4 times, have not had sex in a year with my fiance and my test continues to come back positive. I have been treated with the doxycycline everytime because the other medication I am unable to take due to allergies. Are there any other treatments other than the doxycycline and azithromyacine?
Avatar m tn Unsure whether this was something normal for my penis or not, I have been observing it since. It is not an open sore or a blister, it is not red, and it is painless. Sometimes it is only clearly visible in certain light. It has not changed its form in 19 days. It looks like a tiny "11", raised slightly, whiter than the surrounding tissue. I have always had a few whitish areas on my glans penis (not raised).
Avatar f tn The results came back normal bacterial flora of mouth. Should I do a specific throat swab test for chlamydia gonorrhea herpes and syphillis? Are there any names for such tests? I am waiting for the appointment with a ENT specialist. During that time I wanted to know if I come do any more tests to completely get rid of my fears.
Avatar m tn The Gram stain helps to make a rapid diagnosis but it is not specific for chlamydia. Some patients with chlamydia have negative gram stains and only about 40% of persons with gram stains suggestive of chalmydial infection turn out to have chlamydial infection (the others have a variety of other things). As I said, your partner was not treated in the manner recommended by the CDC, the World helth Organization and by nearly every professional organization.
Avatar m tn However i am not too sure for gonorrhea and chlamydia, as i am not sure if i provide a first catch sample when i did my urine test at 5 weeks post exposure. i think i urinated abit before collecting the urine. The result for gonorrhea and chlamydia are both negative but i am not sure how accurate they are. I did another urine first catch sample test at 20 weeks and is now waiting for my results however i am getting worried everyday.
Avatar f tn So, had brief encounter with sex worker. I am a male and she a female, just for clarity and accuracy of response though I'm confident that this is irrelevant. In any case, I received oral sex lasting only a couple minutes then shortly after completed with handjob. Anyway, that night I had extreme regrets as this not something I regularly do, only once before. So in my anxious state, I thought it best to be proactive and see if I could prevent any full infection from developing.
Avatar m tn htm Number 188052 CPT 87798 These organisms are frequently transfered at the same time as the better known STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia. Gonorrhea has a high cure rate of about 98% (except for resistant strains, where cipro might fail but cefiximine will nearly always work) and chlamydia 96-98%. However mycoplasma/ureaplasma recur about 20-60% of the time. So recurrent urethritis is nearly never due to gonorrhea or chlamydia, unless the patient was reinfected.
Avatar f tn Hi everyone, My mom was recently diagnosed with Hep C associated cirrhosis. She has had some complications, including esophageal varices and ascites. She remains fairly well compensated and does not exhibit symptoms such as fatigue or confusion. During an endoscopy her doctor also noticed an ulcer and tested her for H pylori (which was positive). He's prescribed Prevpac to kill the bacteria and heal the ulcer.
Avatar n tn I slept with someone who I found out later got tested for Chlamydia. Since then, I've been tested twice with the q-tip thing they shove up there and once for something in my urine. All three tests have come back negative for both chlamydia and gonorrhea. Yet, I still have an itching sensation that occurs randomly in spots in my urethra. I have been given medication before just in case the tests were wrong and I have had four different sets.
Avatar n tn m allergic to Penicillin and Sulfa, I just finished taking Doxycycline for a week and feel better. Thanks for the information.
Avatar m tn Having diarrhea after antibiotics is not rare, but also not normal. I recommend you to have stool test for C-diff and for occult blood. Having problems with breathing is probably from the acid coming up into your throat and then down into lungs. You should fix this promptly, it may damage your lungs (aspiration pneumonia, with lung scars). There's another possibility - alergy to one of antibiotics. Would you say you have any lips or face swelling or skin itching?
