Common Questions and Answers about Citalopram zaps

Avatar n tn When I go off of it I get these (electrical zaps, zings) in my ears and head. Is this what you mean by head zaps? I had to go from Effexor right to Citalopram 20mg. It's been 2 days on Citalopram and I am starting to hear these head zings. Should I ask for a larger dose or increase # of times I take it a day? I can't function with these zings going on.
1305767 tn?1361192676 I'm on 40 mg. of Citalopram and I haven't had it in two days because even though it's only 4 bucks at Walmart I don't even have 4 stinking dollars. The brain zaps are the worse plus I'm irritable and want to cry all the time.
Avatar m tn t think you will have many withdrawal symptoms if you stop after such a short time. You may get some brain zaps and worse headaches until the medication has left your system. On the other hand, you may not feel anything at all. Just be prepared in case you get withdrawals.
Avatar m tn I missed 3 days of my 20mg Citalopram prescription (which I've been on for years). I missed because I didn't refill in time. Anyway, SO FAR, I feel better than I have in I don't know how long. The medicine has always kept me very even-keel, but too much so. I never cry much or get depressed, but I don't get as happy and excited as I used to either. I'm pretty tired of not being my silly, happy self.
308074 tn?1289687346 I was having major anxiety attacks while on Citalopram. I had more attacks then, then when I wasnt on the meds. Brain zaps....what are those? Is that where you move your eyes and it feels like your body is being zapped? I have that HORRIBLY right now. I am also on Xanax...I THINK its the offbrand. Paxiled-I know I should have taperd off it...I sometimes do stupid things like that lol. I need to learn to get off it slowly.
1265681 tn?1270103020 I started taking Citalopram because I have been having intense weird thoughts that make no sense intrusive even. I have been having them for three weeks straight with three days of none at all. I have a history of anxiety and panic attack. I have been taking this medication for four days and the thoughts are getting more frequent and worse is this normal? My ears are all so ringing non stop will the ringing go away?
Avatar m tn Paroxetine (Paxil), Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Citalopram/Escitalopram (Celexa, Lexapro) are inhibitors of CYP2D6 - the enzyme responsible for metabolizing lots of medications. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) is inhibiting another enzyme. Sertraline (Zoloft) do not have this side effect, and Venlafaxine (Effexor, a SNRI) is also perhaps a good choice, as itdood said. Citalopram and Escitalopram are both prolonging the cardiac repolarization and they are usually not recommended with arrhythmias.
Avatar n tn My doctor prescribed me Effexor XR and I got my prescription filled but before taking it I decided to do some research about this drug. The withdral and side affects scared me so I decided agains this drug. Then doctor priscribed me Citalopram and I've been taking it since. I have been taking citalopram 20mg a day for about 3 months. At the time of my visits to the doctor I had an insurance that covered my drugs, now I don't have my insurance any longer.
Avatar n tn Then cut one pill in half and took it every other day for a week, then every third day for 2 weeks, and now after a month I feel its safe to say that I took my last pill finally - yippee!!! Unless the brain zaps and nauseau get unbearable again. What I took to ease the pain of the brain zaps, nauseau and mood swings is this: Clonezepam .05 mg, B12 and Fish Oil supplements, and dark chocolate always heps me with mood swings.
Avatar f tn I was on Effexor XR then started using generics Venlafaxine 100mg and Citalopram 20mg. I thought I had the flu after stopping the drugs. Until I read the posts I didn't know what I was experiencing. My withdrawl symptoms have been getting sweats, chills, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, vivid dreams, overall feeling awful, anxiety, .... How long does this last?
Avatar m tn Hi all, My dad, who is 71, has a history of depression and bad moods for most of his life. I get depression too and found 5-HTP to be very helpful but recomended that he try L-Tryptophan for a similar result as I think it is supposed to be easier on the body than 5-HTP (as he is on beta-blockers and blood pressure medications and has health problems).
Avatar n tn I was on Lexapro (escitalopram, quite similar to Celexa/citalopram) a few years ago, and was withdrawn abruptly from it by my doctors. For me, the shock sensations lasted for about 3 months, but during that period they became less and less frequent over time. It's a really bothersome withdrawal symtom, but just remember that it won't last forever. Good luck!

1128565 tn?1316721143 Hi Its Lorraine again !! Silly me carn't find my new anti-depressants prescribed by specialist - 20 mgs Citalopram. The Dr's seem to be having trouble checking info with hospital, they need to verify the new tablets. In the mean time they have left me without any anti-depressants, I know you can get really ill if you don't take them. Up to now I feel ok, but scared I may go down hill !! Feeling quite good at present and wondering whether I could stay off them ??
Avatar m tn Which I did because I was still feeling very anxious. The first medication I started with was citalopram. After only about a week or so I noticed I was feeling about the same but I was always hungry, yet I had no appetite. So my doctor recommended I try out another medication called sertraline. After only a couple days of this I started feeling nauseous, dizzy, fatigued, and occasionally had headaches. I also had bouts of diarrhea.
Avatar m tn Finallya few years ago I tried Lexapro and after a few months It really started to work for me. I later had to switch to Citalopram and did not notice a difference. I eventually progressed to 40 mg of Citalopram and I barely even noticed that I was taking it. In fact, there were days that I forgot to take the drug and that would lead to brain zaps, etc. This brings me to the present....
Avatar m tn 1 mixture of (S)-Citalopram and (R)-Citalopram]; Escitalopram [(S)-Citalopram) is a pure enantiomer. The dosages for Escitalopram are typically 1/2 of those for Citalopram, and there are fewer side effects, suggesting that most side effects come from the (R)-enantiomer.'' Basically escitalopram is the new citalopram with less side-effects and requires only half the dosage and I think it is the reason for it's cheaper price. -http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn I gained about 30 lbs on Citalopram. I work out and eat healthy. I just saw a new doctor and he believes the Citalopram is causing my weight gain. I have been on it for about 18 months. I am now taking half a pill of Citalopram in order to wean myself off of it. My doctor then prescribed me Bupropion HCL (take twice a day). He says that should help with weight loss. Has anyone had good experiences with Bupropion? Did you gain weight on Citalopram? Thanks!!!
Avatar n tn my two days so far have been filled with a couple of days of bad headaches, first day treating with asprin (worked) and today, advil (worked); my question is . . . do you know of other symptoms I should expect? Can Citalopram replace effexor, since there isn't a 'generic' effexor'? I've actually had brain zaps while on effexor, but didn't have a name for that effect through the years until I started reading about withdrawal problems.

Avatar n tn Hello, I am a 54 year old male with severe anxiety and am taking 40 mg of citalopram and lotrel for bp issues. I recently read that citalopram can cause long qt syndrome and since my anxiety issues are driven by my health, I am concerned. My resting heart rate is in the low 50's, I have no family history of long qt, but with my low heart rate I wonder if I should cease to use citalopram. My doctor does not feel this is a problem but I thought I should seek other opinions Thanks .
