Common Questions and Answers about Citalopram and drinking

lexapro

Avatar n tn My daughter is taking escitalopram (Lexapro) which is related and asker her pretty liberal pdoc about drinking because she recently turned 21 and wanted to celebrate. Her pdoc said that a little bit (maybe one drink) would be ok if she sipped it because it would have a greater effect than without the Lex. She warned however that since alcohol is a depressant that it's really doing the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish.
Avatar f tn My partner is alcohol dependant and drinking between 10 and 14 bottles of beer every evening, then taking a 20mg dose of calitopram first thing in the morning. He was precribed it to stop his fitting and anxiety attacks. His doctor was not told how much alcohol he drinks. Is this going to his health worse?
Avatar m tn Thanks guys. I know drinking is bad and I only do it occasionally. I am not an alcoholic my friends drink MUCH more. Although I probably started drinking at a younger age than them. Honestly I just wish I could go out and drink moderately at the bar and not have an awful brain fog the next couple days... even if I drink 3 drinks I feel awful the next day... When I used to be able to go hard and study the next day and feel functional come Monday. Maybe its just age.
Avatar f tn in my expirience, drinking makes my anxiety/ocd worse for a few days after. I haven't drank in a year, but when i did, the next few days i was so nervous and anxious i couldn't function. and yes, xanax and drinking can cause liver and kidney problems over time, and in excess can cause overdose.
Avatar f tn I gained about 30 lbs on Citalopram. I work out and eat healthy. I just saw a new doctor and he believes the Citalopram is causing my weight gain. I have been on it for about 18 months. I am now taking half a pill of Citalopram in order to wean myself off of it. My doctor then prescribed me Bupropion HCL (take twice a day). He says that should help with weight loss. Has anyone had good experiences with Bupropion? Did you gain weight on Citalopram? Thanks!!!
Avatar m tn Yep drinking and late night were my thing till I had a melt down. Late nights are still my thing but not drinking. My therapist told me that alcohol actually cancels out the effects of antidepressant meds so I'm guessing the drinking makes it like your not even taking an antidepressant. I just want this vertigo crap to go away.
Avatar f tn just made this profile as after two years of suffering depression I finally got the courage to go to the doctors yesterday and he said I had servere depression and anxiety and prescribed me on Citalopram 20mg .... Does anyone else take this? I'm doing this all alone, not told family or friends and I'm scared of doing this on my own.. Any advice from anyone who is/has been on Citalopram please?
Avatar f tn My boyfriend started taking Citalopram, 20mg/daily, back in June of 08. His Dr. recommended that he take something for depression since he had recently quit drinking. He had a few side effects for the first couple of weeks but other then that, he was doing great. About 2 months ago he started to get really strange. He moved out of our apartment and in with a friend of his who drinks and does drugs, for no reason at all. It really upset me and he just didn't care.
Avatar m tn When drunk I tend to have no control and end up doing something very harmful to others around me, people have noted that my mood seems to change drastically when drinking and or taking other drugs. I have missed many interviews for important jobs because of getting intoxicated the night before, I have trouble maintaining my sleeping pattern, I over eat or don't eat at all, I have had in the past, problems with leaving the house and being outdoors.
Avatar n tn Combining Alprax and Citalopram can cause central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please discuss with your doctor for alternate medications. In the meantime, I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while on these medications as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn i take 800 mg of lithuim, 60mg of citalopram for my dipolar II disorder and 125mg of levothyroxine for my underactive thyrod i seem to have problems with my sex drive i never want it could it be the meds
Avatar m tn Hi Sorry to burst your bubble but you will suffer withdrawals mine took a few weeks to kick in I came off effexor. But I know my group that Citalopram is not easy to come off you would be better going back on it and weaning off slowly follow cita's withdrawal programme my support group they are on the web.
Avatar m tn 1 mixture of (S)-Citalopram and (R)-Citalopram]; Escitalopram [(S)-Citalopram) is a pure enantiomer. The dosages for Escitalopram are typically 1/2 of those for Citalopram, and there are fewer side effects, suggesting that most side effects come from the (R)-enantiomer.'' Basically escitalopram is the new citalopram with less side-effects and requires only half the dosage and I think it is the reason for it's cheaper price. -http://en.wikipedia.
15256956 tn?1439425231 Let me get this straight. You have a psychiatrist who took you off an antidepressant in just one week? And isn't dealing with the withdrawal problem? The minimum taper should have been six weeks from my experience. You also should research Buspar. See if you think it actually works much of the time. And if your anxiety is related to the heart problem, the beta blocker should theoretically at least have solved that problem.
Avatar m tn In appropriate neurochemical, functional, and behavioural non-clinical experiments, escitalopram shows greater efficacy and faster onset of action than comparable doses of citalopram. The lower efficacy of citalopram in these studies is apparently due to the inhibition of the effect of the S-enantiomer by the R-enantiomer, possibly via an allosteric interaction with the serotonin transporter.
Avatar m tn As a very high functioning nearly 40 year old alcoholic and professional do not minimialize youth and college drinking (says the nearly 40 years old still looking this stuff up who started at 12). I know it’s where my problem starts and have been battlingg ever since. I would like to think that I have been doing it successfully, but if I got help earlier (ive never had help) who knows where I would be. I was an athlehte, MVP 4 letter, a 4.

Avatar f tn Let's start with the drinking part first. If you are still taking this medication, get up right now and go read all the stickers that you'll find on the bottle. One of them will say "Do NOT drink while taking this medication." That warning is on there for a reason and if you don't know what that reason is, I suggest you find out. How well did you know this new roommate? Were you use to smoking pot?
Avatar m tn t know much about the Anti-depressant you are taking but I did a little research for you and found that Celexa is the generic name of a drug called Citalopram. It is worth your while to read the drug fact sheet for this medication.
Avatar f tn Hi I switched from Fluoxetine to Citalopram about 6 months ago as the Fluoxetine was making me gain weight. Since I've been on Citalopram I've put on even more, and am now about 2 stone (14kg) heavier than I was before I started. I don't want to come off ADs as they're helping me so much, but at the same time I don't know if I can cope with any more weight gain. Has anyone experienced weight gain with certain antidepressants then been able to lose with a different one?
Avatar n tn I experienced the same thing. I gained about 30 lbs on citalopram within 18 months.I work out and eat healthy. I knew something was wrong. Well I saw a new doctor and he is weaning me off citalopram (1/2 a pill a day). He thinks it made me gain weight. I kmow take wellbutrin (twice a day). I hope this helps me lose the weight. How are you???
Avatar m tn I doubt that the Citalopram is even working for you after 3 years. Muscle twitches are not a side effect of this medication, so you should consult with your doctor regarding this new symptom. You also want to wean off the Citalopram via your doctor's instructions. I'm happy to hear that therapy is helping you and wish you continued success with it.
