Citalopram for the elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Citalopram for the elderly

celexa

Avatar n tn Combining Alprax and Citalopram can cause central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please discuss with your doctor for alternate medications. In the meantime, I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while on these medications as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression.
Avatar f tn I take a clonazepam at night for restless and OTC unison and I cannot drive in the morning because I fall asleep. I am 85 I sleep till about 4:00 is it the medicines I take. I never had this before. I had a complete blood test, I Do not know how to handle this, Is it the sleeping pill or clonazepam.
Avatar f tn First of all, is all these medications by the same Doctor? I ask because often the Elderly have many Doctors and one Doctor doesn't know what the other is doing. Sandee had some very good advise but to make it easier on you, you should list them and call your local Pharmacist or even the Doctor who prescribed her last prescription and discuss the possible side effects from all. If the medications are all from one Doctor then I wouldn't worry so much.
Avatar m tn Hey There! Congrats on your 52 days! I'm around 43 days now off the Sub. I've been taking Citalopram (Celexa) for a couple months now for PTSD and it's great stuff. My Dr. switched me from Zoloft because it wasn't cutting it. I can relate to the anxiety coming off Sub. I thought that I was going to have a mental break more than once.......
Avatar f tn citalopram is only $4 for a 30 day supply at the pharmacy i work at. is that too much? if the cost of the med is the only reason you're going off it...i'd check around for prices. but if you're uninsured i know doctor visits aren't always cheap. still...a friend of mine see's one thats only like $30 out of pocket with no insurance and you would think being cheap they wouldn't have the best docotrs...but she's very happy with her doc.
Avatar f tn I am seeing the nurse practicianer (SP?) today for a med check. They told me not to take the citalopram last night and see how it goes. I work with the worst panic attack this morning. I am feeling a little lost and hopeless as to what to do now.
Avatar f tn Hello everyone I started having severe anxiety attacks two month ago, though I have suffered with anxiety my whole life. I have been on Citalopram for four days now and the side effects seems to be increasing. I am on a small dose, one quarter of a 20 mg tablet. I am suppose to go up to one half of a 20 mg tab today but am afraid to. I am jittery, have headaches, am groggy but panic when I try to sleep, have heat flashes through my upper body, my eyes feels strange...the list goes on.
Avatar f tn I have days where I think my world is going to crash around me. But it does pass and things go back to as normal as tx will allow. Comes and goes in waves. If you think you can benefit from an AD then see your doctor. In my case no, but many do. It isn't that I'm opposed to them, they just don't work for me. Unfortunately, AD's are not a cure all for everyone, depends on the individual.
Avatar m tn Escitalopram [(S)-Citalopram) is a pure enantiomer. The dosages for Escitalopram are typically 1/2 of those for Citalopram, and there are fewer side effects, suggesting that most side effects come from the (R)-enantiomer.'' Basically escitalopram is the new citalopram with less side-effects and requires only half the dosage and I think it is the reason for it's cheaper price. -http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar n tn Why was your mother prescribed this medication? It is prescribed for many reasons, high blood pressure, anxiety, cluster headaches, and tremors. It does have a break-in period, and low energy, and sleepiness are part of the break-in period, which can take up to 6 weeks. I have never heard of it being prescribed for depression, but rather anxiety. I think she needs to return to her doctor to re-evaluate this medication.
1215447 tn?1266416918 Hi, If you & your husband are not trying to have children, and thus the B.C. pills, until your anti-depressants kick in, I would use a "rubber" along with your BC pill. Meanwhile, while you're doing that, I would ck out the internet site that is put out by the makers of your anti-depressant (apo-citalopram or "citalopram") and look under the medicine's description.
Avatar f tn I just saw a new doctor and he believes the Citalopram is causing my weight gain. I have been on it for about 18 months. I am now taking half a pill of Citalopram in order to wean myself off of it. My doctor then prescribed me Bupropion HCL (take twice a day). He says that should help with weight loss. Has anyone had good experiences with Bupropion? Did you gain weight on Citalopram? Thanks!!!
Avatar f tn Yes, it is safe to take the alprazolam for flying with citalopram. Most multivitamins should be fine, however, it is not recommended to use herbal products such as St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, and valerian with citalopram.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Citalopram for about 9 months for anxiety and panic attacks. I still have a hard time just sitting around, I feel like I have to be busy all the time to keep me from wanting to run or jump up and down. I feel figity and cannot sit still. I am on 40 mg. a day.
Avatar m tn Both citalopram, (Celexa) and escitalopram, (Lexapro) are SSRI's and both have, as unlabeled uses the control of panic. They both also have CNS side effects of anxiety in the beginning stages of treatment. You say you've been on the citalopram for approximately 5 weeks? It can take up to 35 days for citalopram to reach "steady state" in your blood, which means you won't begin to feel any real relief from your depresson for possibly a bit over a month.
Avatar m tn Because it came out of the blue, after three years. Anyway, I am abandoning citalopram, because psychotherapy is at last starting to yield results. Will they be gone? Thanks!
Avatar n tn I am nursing and not using birth control. (My baby is 9 months old) I took 50 mg paxil (paxxet), which worked the best for me out of all the ssri's that I have had for the past 8 years, but I was very sleepy during the day and it is not good in case I become pregnant. My doctor switched me to serenada (seroxat) but I'm experiencing very bad side effects and MUST switch to something else. At the moment, I have some left over citalopram so I am mixing it with the serenada (seroxat).
Avatar n tn I have been taking citalopram 20mg a day for about 3 months. At the time of my visits to the doctor I had an insurance that covered my drugs, now I don't have my insurance any longer. I'm thinking since I still have Effexor XR should I take it now? I started filling really weird as a result of withdral from citalopram since I can't filled my prescription any more. Effexor XR that I have is 37mg the dose that I should increase every 2 weeks.
1767754 tn?1313873884 It came back positive for bppv, but the doc also said it showed some CNS stuff. I wondered if this was the case for you or for anyone else taking citalopram--if it can cause nerve stuff.
Avatar f tn Hi, I take this anti depressant and it's working well for me. I've been taking it for about 2 years now. I think it works well for my depression. I take a couple of pain meds now because my pain is kind of out of control. I was diagnosed with fibro 11 years ago. I also have arthritis and degen. disc disease, so my pain isn't controlled by the Celexa. As I said though, the depression is pretty well controlled by it. Hope this helps.
2062662 tn?1331308846 i have recently started takikg citaloplam for depressiom . From the beginning i have had headache and stomach problems Can i still take tylenol ? ? im just not sure what over the counter drugs are safe with this medication .
Avatar n tn hi, I've been on citalopram 20mg for just under 3weeks for my anxiety. just wondered if anyone had any good results from this medication and how long it took to work?
695983 tn?1242774124 There are so many anti-depressants out there. I know citalopram seems to be the one that they like prescribing here in the UK at the moment (because it can be a very good choice). Explain to your GP that having these symptoms is seriously impacting on your ability to overcome the depression and ask if you can at least try another med. Tell him/her that you refuse to continue with the citalopram. You have to be your own advocate.
