1770925 tn?1365618522 My doctor advised me to use cipro or pennisilin and never sulfa. With that change the neuropathy stopped advancing. He said if I take a lot of vitamine B-12 I would get a little better each year. That was 14 years ago. I now I believe I have nerve damage, but no pain and am Improving.Nerve sensations are returning.
Avatar f tn There are several drugs anyone with a Sulfa allergy should avoid or take with caution including: Some diuretics. Some oral medications used for diabetes (glyburide, diabeta, micronase, amaryl). The NSAID Celebrex. The migraine drug Imitrex. Although some sulfa-sensitive people can take these drugs without problem, they do contain ingredients closely related to sulfa and it is possible to have an adverse reaction. (It's kind of like the chicken pox/shingles relationship.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a sulfa allergy as a child and haven't had any problems since as my doctors know of this allergy when prescribing medication. However, due to the geothermal activity and potential exposure to sulphur related gases/water, I wanted to know if travelling to Iceland would pose any health risks. I know that sulfa and sulphur are related but not the same but I am still concerned that I might be exposed to problems when inhaling gases or drinking water.
Avatar f tn My big concern is that I was diagnosed with a Sulfa allergy as a child when a Sulfa Based Opthalmic Ointment was used to treat an eye infection and I broke out in hives after using the drug. My daughter used Sulfa Antibiotics to treat a UTI and over the course of a week her face swelled up. The pharmacist had mentioned taking the medication and trying benadryl and if I have a reaction to seek medical treatment immediately.
Avatar f tn Any positive feedback on taking Cipro? Diagnosed with bladder infection. Took first dose this morning. Scared to take second after reading all bad stuff. The only thing I feel is a little tingly in arm and hand.
Avatar f tn Worked in India, pakistan, bangladesh and kenya and always came down with something. The doc said cipro kills 90% of any stomach bacteria ingested and is a very strong med and can definatley upset your stomach.
Avatar f tn m prone to them due to spinal cord damage that makes it hard to empty my bladder completely, so I have LOTS of experience. The standard course with cipro is 250mg, twice daily, for a full 10 days. Even more standard is tx with sulfa drugs, but I developed an allergy to them so I haven't had them for ages. During my final stages of triple tx I got one bladder infection that (probably due to my low WBC) moved almost instantaneously into my kidneys, and that required the 500mg dose of cipro.
Avatar m tn Lasix (Furosemide) has a sulfonamide in its structure and there is a concern of possible allergic reactions in a person with a Sulfa allergy. However, if she has taken the medication and only is experiencing gastrointestinal difficulties, this is not a concern about an allergic response to the medication. To resolve some of the gastrointestinal complaints, Lasix (Furosemide) should be taken with food or a glass of milk however; this can affect the diuretic effects of the medication.
Avatar m tn I was prescribed Cipro for and URI. I started to itch so my doctor told me to discontinue it because I am allergic to Sulfa drugs. I have been itching on my thighs, arms, face, hands, ears and elbows. My eyes also swell when I scratch I see bruises. What could possibly be wrong with me.. My blood work was normal.
Avatar m tn Yesterday I received a Lipo-Plex injection (B12 with Lipotropics) that contains Methionine a sulfur containing amino acid. I have a Sulfa allergy (normally get an extremely high fever). Should I be worried? I haven't had any side effects. Feeling a little flushed (hot) but that is about it. Otherwise I feel great. Can I continue with these shots? Thanks!
Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum, you have a history of drug allergy. It is quite rare one having allergy to all the medication. In such cases you need to keep anti histaminics with you so as to prevent allergic reactions. Drugs like penicillin and sulfa group of drugs are most common cause for hypersensitivity reaction. As you have a history of penicillin allergy. If your body is hypersensitive to sulfa, reaction will be similar to that you develop for penicillin.
Avatar f tn A sulfite reaction is different from a sulfonamide allergy (a reaction to sulfa drugs) because sulfites and sulfonamides are entirely different chemicals and have unrelated mechanisms of reaction. A person sensitive to sulfites is no more likely to be allergic to sulfonamides than any other individual and vice versa. " http://www.itmonline.org/arts/sulfa.

Avatar n tn On the other hand, I was googling sulfa-allergy and it says people with low immune system such as the ppl with HIV are very vulnerable to the sulfa-allergy. and the symptoms are rather similiar to mine.. and I am pretty healthy most of the time. my test result will not return until another week. and I'm really worried right now. I wonder if you can give some clues on whats going on.
Avatar f tn I have had chronic bladder infections for years and have seen several different Urologists some in single practice, some in large practices with multiple doctors and even at large medical centers like the Cleveland Clinic and U of M Medical Center. I have brought in multiple urine samples which were tested then sent away for testing. They always come back showing bacteria. I've taken enough antibiotics to become allergic to Sulfa, Bactrum,Cipro and Tetracycline.
Avatar f tn Are you, by any chance, allergic to sulfa drugs? My sister had a similar reaction to hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), and the doctor said it was because she was allergic to sulfa. My sister had not put her sulfa allergy on her medical history form at the cardiologist's office, because the sulfa reaction had been so long ago. When the doctor prescribed HCTZ, which evidently has sulfa in it, my sister reacted to that.
Avatar f tn I found out the hard way in January that I have a severe allergy to sulfa antibiotics. It was hives head to toe for weeks and nothing really helped, I just had to wait it out. Well now that's gone but my system still isn't back to normal. I've switched, per a dermatologist's advice, to free and clear products, but four months down the road my hives have become chronic.
Avatar n tn When I wake up in the morning, I see round reddish spots on my entire body including face, eye lids, heels and palms with intolerable itching. As the day moves on I feel some relief, but in the evenings and nights the situation gets worse. I am a 30 year old female and have lot of unwanted hair on my entire body including face. Application of wax also produces allergic reaction. Please help me on this.
Avatar m tn I used to be able to use/eat/etc things with sulfa in it...then one day I went to the doctor for an infection. I was given sulfa based antibiotics...which I had used several times before. Within a few hours after taking the first one my tongue swelled up, cracked, started to bleed...my throat was next...and then I woke up in the hospital. As we age, our allergies change. One day you're eating shrimp or peanut butter...the next time you almost die.
Avatar f tn About 3 months back i had a kidney infection, they put me on sulfa base medicine and i discovered i was allergic to the sulfa and had a drug.reaction toit. They had given me a steroid shot and steroid pills to continue taking for about 8-10 days. Along with a antihistamine. They worked and rash was cleared up. The same rash appeared about 2 weeks later again i went to the doctor and they did the same routine (steroid and antihistamine). Cleared up again.
Avatar n tn I took 1 dose of 500mg Cipro Friday night at 5:30p.m. Immediately felt flushed and red in the face. I continue to have flare ups 3 days later. How long does this take to go away.
Avatar m tn I had a really bad reaction to the Sulfa and switched to Cipro. At this point he sent me to an Urologist. Also around this time I went to a clinic to get checked again for STDs, this was roughly 2 months and 20 days from the encounter; all but the HSV-1 (Cold sores?) came back negative. Somewhere in this time period I noticed an ever so slight white patch in the middle of the discoloration. I went to the Urologist and some of the questions he asked were: Did I urinate a lot?
