Avatar f tn If you are of Scandinavian descent then HLA-B27 gene is present in about one third population and not all having this gene have ankylosing spondylitis. Also while 90 percent of people having ankylosing spondylitis have the HLA-B27 gene, but all those who have the HLA-B27 gene do not have ankylosing spondylitis. So, since both your parents have the HLA-B27 gene, you are likely to inherit it from them.
Avatar n tn I am a Vietnam Vet and I have been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and I am wondering if there is a link between ankylosing spondylitis and agent orange?
Avatar m tn Cancer has not returned. However he is diabetic and last year was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. He was taking remicade by infusion but had to stop that due to his chronic anemia. The rheumatology doctor told him that the ankylosing spondylitis can cause ulcerative colitis and crohn's. He is now 74 has had 32 blood transfusions over about 16 months and has also been diagnosed with crohn's disease. They believe he is bleeding internally.
975514 tn?1324997938 All of the tests provide indicators, antibodies that are present, genetic markers that predispose us to conditions. These tests alone cannot make a diagnosis. It is the combination of lab work, examinations, symptoms, xrays and MRIs that provide the detail to put together a diagnosis. You might want to consider getting a second or third opinion. See a specialist in AS. Rheumatology is a vast field and sometimes it helps to see someone with more experience in the suspect condition.
Avatar f tn I have ankylosing spondylitis currently take Humira and antiflamitories. I avoid sugar and certain meats like chicken and pork to avoid attacks. However one thing I can't avoid is weather changes such as spring and fall. This last year has been a real rough the attacks have been really bad. Any suggestion?
Avatar n tn Ankylosing spondylitis is most likely a multifactorial condition, which means that it involves a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors. Having one copy of the HLA-B27 variant (of the HLA-B gene) causes an increased risk to develop ankylosing spondylitis; however, most people with this variant do not develop any symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis even when inherited from an affected parent. We all have two copies of the HLA-B gene - we inherit one copy from each parent.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have Ankylosing Spondylitis? I have suffered with the disease and related symptoms for over 30 years. My daughter who was 30 died of the comlications of this diesease three years ago.

Avatar f tn I was told in February of this year that I have arthritis in my lumbar spine. This was a year after I started having severe lower back pain. I also have a herniated disk, early DDD and stenosis. I was sent to a neurosurgeon who said I was not a surgical candidate due to my age (26). My doctor then sent me to pain management because he had nothing else to offer me. I never had blood work done. Only an XRAY and MRI.
1330108 tn?1333677304 I was diagnosed with reactive arthritis with I was maybe eight years old but once I was 19yrs old it became clear that it was something more. I was finally correctly diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis at the age of 20. I was in the middle of college and struggling to succeed in my course work because of the pain. But I haven't let pain stop my life yet.
Avatar f tn From what I've seen, just about everything can be explained by the Ankylosing Spondylitis. For example, "pain... he feels it in his left hand arm, jaw and chest frequently". AS is known for starting with one sided pain. Also for flares. https://www.spondylitis.org/Ankylosing-Spondylitis/Symptoms Chest/rib pain in AS is infamous (though they naturally have to rule out cardiac problems). One thing that doesn't fit in is the gallbladder.
Avatar n tn Now he is in remission with the colitis but is having the pain - I think it is because he needs the anti-inflammatories and he is going to get tested for ankylosing spondylitis as it runs in my family. It is also very common to get a lot of pain if you are dehydrated. Up your fluids and your potassium, sodium and magnesium. I found that eating potato chips, bananas and gatoraid really helped.
Avatar m tn ESR is often elevated with ankylosing spondylitis, but not always. Have you had an Anti-nuclear antibody test (ANA) to rule out Lupus or other similar conditions? Many/most people with ankylosing spondylitis have trouble breathing... is this one of your symptoms? If you have the HLA-B27 marker, which is often present in arthritis type conditions, it's possible you could have AS... From what I've read, AS is rare in those without this gene, but I could be wrong.
Avatar n tn I am from Nagpur, MS, India. I am suffering from ankylosing spondylitis since 1989. I am bedridden since 1996. But from few days i am able to walk with the help of walker. My bone density is too low. My doctor said that my bone density match to the bone density of 100-105 year old person. I am ankylose from neck to knee. That means i am having bamboo spine & my complete hip & both knees are ankylose. I had to undergo complete hip & both knee replacement surgery.
Avatar f tn My daughter has Ankylosing Spondylitis with uveitis she get (stairrod ?? on spelling) injection in both her eyes when her eyes are inflam. Her last injection was alittle over a year ago, she went to her regular eye doctor for an exam just 3 weeks and found out she is blind in her right eye now, A large floater in the middle of her eye. (She had 20/20 last year in that eye.) The doctor said her macular is inflam and there nothing they can do for her sight.
709277 tn?1229116708 I have recently tested positive for the HLA-B27gene. My father had Ankylosing Spondylitis. Prior to discovering this, I had three episodes with Ischemic Colitis with no known cause. I am very interested to find out if there is any connection between the two.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the reply. I'm waiting for the results of a bone density scan. Also my doctor wants me to have an MRI scan too. I'm taking pain killers at night so I can get some sleep and an anti inflammatory . Ankylising spondylitis is a possibility too as it is in my family.
Avatar f tn Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic form of arthritis that affects the spinal column and results in fusing of vertebrae which is caused due to swelling of spinal ligaments and tendons. Symptoms vary from patient to patient but generally there is pain in hips, lower back and sometimes at the back of thighs. Diagnosis is based on the area, type and progression of pain and treatment includes medication in the form of non-steroidal drugs and sometimes hip replacement surgery is required.

Avatar n tn My father-in-law was just diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis. My husband has had back and neck pain for years but in the last six months it has been severe. (He's actually complaining about it which is unusual because he has a high tolerancy for pain.) From what I read, Ankylosing Spondylitis begins in your lower back. My husband has pain all in his back and neck, mostly beginning in his mid back, up through his shoulders, neck and base of his head.
Avatar f tn has she been tested for ankylosing spondylitis? rheumatoid arthritis? does she ever pop her own back? what is her weight, height, race? is there any inflamation on joints in x-rays, any spinal MRI? spinal x-ray? what knee was her arthroscopy on? where is the back pain centralized? where are the knee pains(what part of knee)?does she experience pain in the chest at all(non-cardiac)? is there any sign of inflamation on her knuckles?
