Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies fleas

cat-allergies

Avatar n tn Hi Kiki, My cat was just dx'd with herpes in her eyes. For years, we too, thought it was allergies, but no. According to my vet, herpes is very common in cats. The way I figured out what was possibly going on with my cat was to google "feline herpes conjunctivitis." Some sites will give you pictures to look at and compare as well as descriptions. Discharge from the eyes have many possible dx's, but a simple blood test will confirm whether your kitty has herpes or not.
Avatar f tn It started about a year ago. I took her to the vet and the vet tried to tell me it was fleas. She is an indoor cat so she has no fleas. The vet treated her for fleas anyway and it didn't work. She shave her neck to see the scabs before she said it was fleas. since the flea treatment didn't work I put antibacterial ointment on her boo boo's and rubbed her whole body down with Skin so Soft bath oil from Avon and the licking and scratchin ceased, and her hair started growing back.
Avatar f tn I use indorex flea spray in my home every 10month (it lasts 12month) and my cats are indoor cats. I read on here about allergies to fleas but she has had fleas before (when we got her) and she did not have a reaction then. She's been completely clean for over a year now so I'm pretty sure it's not fleas. I've also seen ringworm on a cat and it's not this either. I'm worried about her as she has been casting A LOT lately and wonder if it could be a skin condition.....
Avatar f tn t have a product that will help to kill fleas long term, all that is happening is that you are killing fleas with the bath and then more fleas jump on the cats. Go see your vet and then let us know what he/she says... Good luck!
Avatar n tn The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.
Avatar f tn Thirdly, if you have fleas outside, and your cat goes in and out, then you have fleas in your house. If you cat is allergic to fleas and is getting sores from flea bites, then she has fleas and is bringing them into the house. If she doesn't have fleas, then the sores are not from flea bites and are most likely from the flea treatments. Either way the solution is to get rid of the fleas in your house, keep you cat indoors, and stop using flea treatments on her.
Avatar n tn Food allergies, fleas allergy dermatitis, scabies and other mites are all culprit's for hair loss. Please have your cat examined by a vet.
Avatar f tn Could be nothing more than an allergic reaction to fleas. Take a comb and comb your cat over a white sheet or towel. If you see little brown dots and when you squish them they may turn a muddy red, you will know the cat has fleas. Only vet can tell you definitively what the problem is. He may have to take a skin scrapping. Food allergies usually manifest around the face and ears. Flea allergies will appear at the hind end where they seek warmth. Either way sounds like kitty is miserable.
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
Avatar f tn My MewMew is highly allergic to fleas and will scratch herself raw if the fleas find her and start living on her. Her ears and face were so scratched up 2 years ago when I adopted her that the vet was the first place I took her. Fleas don't only hide in long hair, they will go for the nose, ears, and around the eyes to get their nourishment.... Please let us know what you find out after your vet visit...
1414187 tn?1283269643 a lot of cats are allergic to beef.also flea allergies, use a flea comb to see if there are any fleas first, regular combs brushes wont work.some cats though they love it are allergic to wet food.wash your cat with dawn soap regularly (once month or two months)this will help this problem.some cat shampoos actually have an ingredient that is very toxic to cats,i dont know why they sell it.i dont recomend steroid shot, hydroxyzene is a little better but try to avoid medications.
Avatar f tn I have used Feline Dophilus, which is made by Natren, for my cat who has had various skin allergies, and it helped a lot. It also helped with her constipation, vomiting, and diarrhea. You can give it to your cat every day for three days, then every other day for a week or so, then cut back gradually to twice a week for maintenance. It is worth a try, and can't really hurt, since it is non-invasive for your kitty.
Avatar n tn Hi debra...congratulations on having a senior kitty cat! Savas is right, its hard to say what is going on without more information. Knowing more of his history can be helpful. For example, when was the last time the veterinarian saw him, when was the last time bloodwork was done, and what does he normally eat? As cats age, just like us, some systems don't work as well anymore and he could be suffering from dry skin or allergies.
Avatar m tn Hello! My cat Molly is seven years old, no clue what breed she is, I got her at a pet shop (I know, a bad idea). I was only eight years old so I just got her because she was pretty! She's a mostly outdoor cat during the day, but she sleeps in my room at night. She has recently developed three bald patches on her back/tail area. At first there was only one, but upon examination I noticed three, and possibly more coming.
Avatar f tn no this sure isn't normal...usually when there is a loss of fur or 'ripping' out its always due to allergies...the allergies can be inhaled, ingested or environmental. I am assuming the food and litter has remained unchanged. that makes me think its either something in the house your kitty is reacting too....was there a product used to clean the carpets..for instance. Or fleas? flea allergy can also cause this to happen. copy the link below for more info and photos..
770551 tn?1305578901 I removed a lot of fleas from Dexter by bathing and combing him but he still has them. Do you know what I can use on a kitten this small (6 weeks)?
Avatar n tn hi and welcome, hair loss can be a sign of many things, from food or inhaled allergies to fleas or ringworm....I will send you a few sites to look at, if you have any questions I would be glad to help you more. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2141&aid=195 http://www.cat-health-guide.org/cat-skin-problems.
Avatar m tn 2) Allergies - Fleas, food, dust, dog dander. 3) Maybe Anemic - eating cat litter and chewing at skin/fur all the time. Does anyone know what I can do to help her besides move her to a better enviroment, treat for fleas and change the food and litter back to what it was before the problems arised?
Avatar m tn Hey guys I have a pug and a dsh cat both around 4 years old. About 2 months ago we found out our dog had fleas we counted up to 4 over the course of 3 days so we immediately gave him a flea bath (probably should have steered clear) and followed up by buying them frontline plus. They seem to be flealess since. Meaning I check often and haven't seen any flea dirt or actual fleas on either of them. The problem im having now is they both seem to be scratching around their face area.
Avatar f tn (like fleas) can cause allergies. Not saying your cat has fleas....just saying you might want to double check :) Good Luck.
905793 tn?1254273122 The symptoms you describe can be typical of fleas, and if if your cat and the poodle are not already treated with a good prescription monthly flea preventative such as Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution, then I would recommend starting with this (call your veterinarian to obtain these products; over the counter flea control products are not as effective and can be toxic to cats). Fleas can sometimes be hard to find especially since cats tend to groom them off.
Avatar f tn My daughter brought her two little shitzu dogs to visit for a few days and had not treated them with the flea preventative that she usually uses, because the weather had been cold and she didn't think there would be a problem. Well, we had some warm days and the dogs brought fleas into the house. Both she and I have a bad allergic reaction to the bites and my husband does not. I flea bombed the house and am still feeling bites. I itch all over and develop bad rash.
