Common Questions and Answers about Carb counter ketosis

carb

Avatar n tn He has proven that this can be safe long-term, and many persons with diabetes have also foundthis to be true. Such a low carb diet as this can cause ketosis (presence of keytones), which is the natural byproduct. Moral again is that it is very important to keep blood sugars well controlled. whether this be low or medium or high carb diet, and with exercise and meds and other lifestyle measures.
Avatar f tn A low carb diet causes the body to go into Ketosis whereby the body uses its fat as a source of energy. Also when you are in ketosis your body feels less hungry. This all sounds good except that this can also lead to kidney issues (even failure), osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Stay balanced and control your calories and you'll lose weight and avoid the side effects. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Dietary Ketosis has nothing to do with BG until your liver runs out of stored glucagon it can continue to raise BG (ie 8 - 10 hour high when fasting) how low are you going on the carbs? you can be in Ketosis with high BG. Ketosis means your body is using ketones for fuel instead of glucose. Diabetesforum(dot)com has many people doing diatery Ketosis.
Avatar f tn This is the beginning of ketosis caused by the body switching from burning carbohydrates to only fat. It is telling you that your carb intake is way too low. Ketosis can be hard on your kidneys so don't eliminate carbs altogether.
1436324 tn?1283698760 DKA is a state of exreme and uncontrolled ketosis and will result after a period of time of very high blood sugars. People on low carb diets produce some ketones but it is not dangerous unless you have very high blood sugars consistently. Two very different things.
Avatar f tn t help you burn fat (unless you are starving yourself), just water loss and muscle (protien stores) and low carb diets are very unhealthy for you, puts you into a state of ketosis, which creates ketones that are very toxic to your kidney and liver. To lose fat you need to eat healthy, gain muscle (muscle is your metabolism) and do aerobic cardio and sometimes implement intense cardio, such as HIIT. You need to do more than just go on a diet.
Avatar m tn Hi, ketone level of 1+ is not very high, though it is detectable. The fact that your blood sugar is totally normal at 83 means that the ketones you saw are from what is known as 'nutritional or metabolic ketosis'. This is not dangerous, in fact it is normal and a healthy response of the body to fasting, or to eating high fat low carb meals. When you fly be sure to drink plenty of water. Flying, with the dry air, is very dehydrating.
Avatar f tn Hello, levels of 400+ are alarming and could be you at risk of diabetic coma caused by diabetic ketosis. No, these meds are not sufficient under such case. Insulin should be used. You need immediate treatment in this case. To manage blood sugars you need medication (probably insulin) combined with low carb diet and exercise. Do not eat sweets, breads, rice, candies, fruit, fruit juice when your sugars are so high.
Avatar f tn Towards the end of February 2017 I had ketones in my urine and was in ketosis. I was excercisin religiously and watching my carb intake.i was eating between 100 to 150gms of carbs. I was not on a ketogenic diet. After that visit i have been extremely ill. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. blood sugar dropping rapidly when after exercise. My doctor said it could be the phentermine but that the metformin xr could also be reacting to the phentermine.
Avatar m tn I leveled off for over a year and ended up gaining 15 lbs back eating well under my maintenance level 90% of the time and then last July I started a low carb diet, in 10 months excluding water weight I lost about 13 lbs. During this time I didn't exercise as much but I really watched the carbs and calories and ate around 1800 - 2000 a day plus some light exercising a few times a week due to a injury I was trying to nurse.
Avatar n tn This may be ketosis or in your case post exercise ketosis. You smell like acetone in a ketosis state . This is as close as i can find to nail polish; acetone is an ingredient in nail polish remover. The reason for ketosis is due to not enough glucose and so the body has to break down stored fat and convert it into energy instead. Metabolizing fat raises blood ketone levels therefore leading to ketosis.
Avatar n tn I use the sweet bee carb counter it lists 200 top foods and their carb and glucose level
Avatar n tn Low carb diets have been shown to be unhealthy long-term. Veggies are all carbs. Fruits are carbs. Complex carbs such as whole grains are the best source of long-term energy. Too much protein, especially animal protein, can cause kidney problems and is linked to a higher rate of cardiovascular disease.
Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar f tn I just now looked up the keto diet and thyroid problems - it looks like very low carb intake (ketosis) is associated with lower free T3 levels and may prevent T4 from being converted in to T3, but if you are doing a "low carb" version without giving up carbs completely, you should be ok. (And taking supplemental hormone should help you get to the right level of T3 even if you are in ketosis).
764257 tn?1234724152 I agree with the above. Talk to your doctor about whether you should try Atkins or not. I was on Atkins for approximately 5 months (something happened and I completely stopped eating, but it isn't related to the diet). The results were fantastic. By the end of the second week I (a carb lover) didn't want to eat carbs although I was still eating fruits and veggies. I lost weight and I felt good.
Avatar f tn Hi all, I started Atkins in early January '09. I have done Atkins before back in 2004/05 and lost 60lbs and got down to 160lbs which was pretty good for my height about 5'6". It took me about 7 months to get to my target weight. I was extremely happy and felt great. Got married in 2006 and well...kinda gained it all back and then some...so it goes huh. I hate I did that but I truly love food and before I knew it...all the weight was back on again.
Avatar f tn d suggest getting a carb-counter booklet at a bookstore -- in the section of diet books -- many calorie counting books contain carb amounts too. My number one recommendation is: don't allow diabetes to change your son's life. We look at it as an inconveniece (to say the least,) but it hasn't changed anything my son would normally do. He's a lifeguard and does Tour de France style bike racing.
Avatar f tn t eat sufficient carbs then you will start suffering the consequences like more cavities, lack of calcium etc. This is what my doctor told me. I have ketosis by the way.
Avatar f tn that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn Say you were about 16, anemic, and borderline diabetic. Would the Ketosis diet do any good in this situation? Please help and give detailed answers please, and if you know anything that would make following the diet easier, I would be much obliged in hearing it.
Avatar f tn I follow the primal blueprint more than strict paleo, and it works put to be high fat, moderate protein, low carb. And really, I eat so many damn fruits nvegetables every day its crazy, it just works out "low carb" because I'm not doing anything else carby. It is definitely worth considering reintroducing certain grains eventually. I have also reintroduced dairy because I tolerate it well. Its about figuring out for your self what your best choices are.
Avatar n tn I am looking for some type of electronic, hand-held carb counter that has a library of foods pre-programmed into it. I would like it to be able to plug in the portion size and have it calculate the total carbs. Plus, I'd like to be able to add foods to it. Although his pump can do some of this already, I'd like to have a separate calculator that isn't attached to his body. I would also like to get a dry/liquid measuring set and a kitchen scale for home use.
Avatar n tn The chicken is fine as it is protein, but the corn and the plaintains are quite high in carbs for a portion. Its a starchy vegetable. Check the glycemic index or a carb counter book. You can find this info online. I love corn also, just dont have it to often anymore.
