Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar m tn I had a skin problem like that too but nothing over the counter worked. The doctor gave me something called lostren. A cream. You probably need something perscribed too.
Avatar n tn If you cannot find a carb listing on the label, then call the company that makes it and find out what its carb content is. By law, all U.S. made food products are supposed to list carb contents as well as other nutritional info. 4. The carb content of several major alcoholic beverages is available on several websites. Check this one out for info: http://www.vhi.ie/experts/diet/diet_q292.
Avatar f tn d suggest getting a carb-counter booklet at a bookstore -- in the section of diet books -- many calorie counting books contain carb amounts too. My number one recommendation is: don't allow diabetes to change your son's life. We look at it as an inconveniece (to say the least,) but it hasn't changed anything my son would normally do. He's a lifeguard and does Tour de France style bike racing.
Avatar f tn that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar m tn I read in a book called food for cures that you are suppose to put golden raisins in a dish and cover with gin, let set until all the gin is disolved into the raisins and then you are suppose to eat 9 a day for athritis pain, I havent tried it yet but found it very interesting.
Avatar n tn I am looking for some type of electronic, hand-held carb counter that has a library of foods pre-programmed into it. I would like it to be able to plug in the portion size and have it calculate the total carbs. Plus, I'd like to be able to add foods to it. Although his pump can do some of this already, I'd like to have a separate calculator that isn't attached to his body. I would also like to get a dry/liquid measuring set and a kitchen scale for home use.

Avatar n tn The chicken is fine as it is protein, but the corn and the plaintains are quite high in carbs for a portion. Its a starchy vegetable. Check the glycemic index or a carb counter book. You can find this info online. I love corn also, just dont have it to often anymore.
Avatar f tn You will find that you could sustain your energy better as well. Read labels and watch net carb (total carb-fiber). Should be 40g for guys and 20g for women on a daily basis.
Avatar n tn Bulgar, Himalayan red rice, wild rice, Quinoa, ate all supposed to be better than plain white rice. Research shows sourdough to be better than even what bread. But ultimately tough have to try different things and check your blood after every meal and see what causes biggest spikes. Like for me I just can't do potatoes.

Avatar m tn I have been Experiencing a pretty nasty skin rash on my chest, Lower back, under arms and stomach since I have stated a low-carb diet. When I noticed the rash about 6 months ago I was just trying the program for the first time and neither myself or my doctor connected the two together. After about 2 weeks of induction (less than 20 carbs per day) I began to slowly reintroduce foods back into my diet and the rash began to fade away.
Avatar f tn t know which kind of arthritis it is. I eat gin soaked raisins to help. They must be the yellow golden raisins. Put an inch or so layer into a saucer. Cover the raisins about half way with gin. Let them have time for the alcohol to evaporate. Afterwards it doesn't taste much like nasty old gin. With the last batch I made, I just left them uncovered on my kitchen counter all day rather than covering and waiting days for the transformation.
Avatar n tn I use insulin and prefer to stick with the carb/fat/protein breakdowns meaning I have to use carb counter books to figure out the values of what I eat so that I can match 1 unit of Humalog against 10 grams of carbs. I just started using Lantus and it works like a miracle now! So, you need to give more specifics about type of diabetes, medications, exercise, etc. and timing of meals.
Avatar n tn Some people can drink vodka or gin without developing a headache but cannot drink red wine, beer or the amber-colored hard liquors. Red wine contains tyramine which probably causes these headaches. On the other hand, hard liquor contains ingredients called cogeners, which may also cause headaches. Darker, amber-colored liquors contain more congeners than light-colored liquors, such as vodka and gin. Take care and best regards.
Avatar n tn She has only been on insulin and low carb diet for a coupe weeks but her blood glucose levels have been consistently good. I know this may change, and several people (mostly Type 11 patients) have told me giving her Vitamin B12 and chromium would help. My question s are has anyone here tried those supplements or others? How did your physician feel about it? and are nutraceutical supplements safe for a child as young as mine?
Avatar f tn Then went straight to the frig for some fruit. Carbs seemed to keep the nausea down throughout the day. Counter act all the carb consumption with fruit and your diet should balance out so you don't gain to much weight to fast. Drunk lots of fluids like milk water and juice. Unfortunately the first trimester is pretty bad about the sickness so you will want to rest a lot. Hopefully it will subside by the 18th or 20th week. You could also try sea bands.
451075 tn?1210258648 The thing is, if you go back to your regular way of eating, chances are very good you will regain those 4-5 pounds in no time. I love eating low-carb. I've done it on and off for several years. It keeps me away from things that 'sound' healthy for me, like whole wheat crackers, which I might as well staple to my belly for all the good they do me! I recently had my cholesterol checked and my numbers were terrific. And I actually feel better eating low-carb!
