Avatar n tn Dear winkster, Actually a diabetic diet is really only what a healthy diet would be for people without diabetes. And fruits are a part of that even though they have sugar it get metabolized like any other carbohydrates.
Avatar n tn i had a doctor appointment this morning with a new doctor nd she asked if there were any over the counter medications i was taking. i had to answer no that i only take things as recommended by doctors.
Avatar f tn Yeah your right. The low carb diet has worked for me before. I guess I'm just being impatient because the excess 10kilos I've put on I can really feel. Thanks for the response.
Avatar n tn The same things that work for non-diabetics trying to lose weight work for diabetics. Reduce caloric intake and increase exercise. Many of us believe in low carb eating and the lower carb you eat you will also lose weight. Be sure if you do this to reduce your insulin intake as it will also lower your blood sugar. Obviously lowering fat intake will also help lose weight and you will have to eat a lot more vegies, salads, and more lean meat (skinless chicken or fish) to compensate.
325405 tn?1262290178 My blood sugar levels are controlled well with metformin and low carb dieting. How low carb can I go? I am eating about 12 carb choices per day, with a caloric intake of around 1400 calories, with high fiber. It is hard to exercise in winter and I can't afford a gym membership with all my medication copays, plus I have a 2 year old with autism who has therapy 4 times per week plus it is just tired mommying.
Avatar m tn com is a good site that lists carb counts for all foods. (you can also get them on labels of prepackaged foods). Many pre-diabetics and Type 2's have learned that carb reduction combined with exercise can keep blood sugar in range for a long time without the need for medication.
973741 tn?1342342773 Good info. Need to rethink my diet! This is challenging for me but necessary. Artmesia, do you follow a vegan diet? Tips? Some take medications? Is there anything new coming down the pike or is it still metformin and that class of meds?
Avatar n tn Along with avoiding sugary foods a low to no carb diet plan is recommended for t2 diabetics. Carbs to t2 diabetics are the same as sugar - elevates our glucose [blood sugar] above and beyond acceptable levels. A very good place to look for low carb recipes is the Atkins [diet] web site http://tinyurl.com/atkins-recipes . Replace sugar with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda or Stevia.
Avatar n tn Hi i just recently read some very recent articles from doctors saying that the atkins diet could be a very good way of eating for diabetics because of the low carb approach that insulin is hardly affected. To me it makes sense cause i wouldn't mind my great aunt who is a diabetic to try the atkins or another low carb diet to help here with her blood sugar problems.
Avatar n tn You are normal. After meal ranges are <180 mg/dl while some doctors want to see <140 mg/dl. [< means less than].
Avatar n tn Hello again, I have to comment on the diet portion of your question. I do not think there is anything wrong with low carb "MEALS" for a type 1 diabetic, but a Zero to Low Carb "DIET" might not be a good idea for a person living with type 1. Please seek advice from your son's Endocrinologist. As I stated yesterday, it sounds like he had been in the "honeymoon phase".
10589910 tn?1413272458 Do we have any diabetics that were diabetic before pregnancy? Not gestational diabetes. If so I'm wondering some things...
1436324 tn?1283698760 Dietary ketosis caused by fasting or eating very low carb is not the same thing as DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis). DKA is a state of exreme and uncontrolled ketosis and will result after a period of time of very high blood sugars. People on low carb diets produce some ketones but it is not dangerous unless you have very high blood sugars consistently. Two very different things.
Avatar n tn All diabetics are very different, so what works for your blood sugar may not work for the next person. The best way to know what foods you can eat is to test, test, test. Eat a meal you usually enjoy and then test two hours later. If you are over 140 then you either can no longer eat those foods, or need to cut the portions. If you do a lot of testing for awhile then you will get more familiar with foods and how they affect you.
Avatar n tn A well balanced diet will keep anyone healthy. The best foods for him are the same foods that are good for you. However, lower carb foods can help prevent highs. What a diabetic needs to understand about food is that to accurately count the carbohydrates in the food is essential. If you need help figuring out carbs, Calorie King has an excellent book which lists carbs for most foods and restaurants. http://www.calorieking.
720228 tn?1530911279 I personally do not think there is a special diet for Diabetics, basically they have to eat less of everything plus keeping in mind the amount of sugar in what they eat/drink e.g. sugar free drinks and these are good for everyone including children. If any one parent has Diabetes care is required with children's diet. Higher protein is good for Diabetics but just as good for everyone especially children.
Tbd Many chose a new way of eating (WOE), LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). as diabetics it is carbs that raise BG, eating low carb works well for controlling BG. The "eat low fat" mantra is based on BAD science. even the US CDC says cholesterol in the diet is not a concern. Also when carbs are removed from the diet then some other form of energy is needed... fat. I eat under 50 gr of carbs a day and have been since 2000.
Avatar m tn I was advised to under go ECP, (External Counter Pulsation) which the doctor says may improve my quality of life. Anybody in this forum underwent this treatment ? what is the fed back? Any side effect? Pl give me feedback.
