In answer to your question regarding T3 meds, while there are sites online that say they sell cytomel without a prescription, I would never buy from them, because I have no idea what they are really selling...
There are also some glandular products that are sold over the counter, but they are supposed to have the actual hormone content removed and are simply ground up tissue.

In the USA at least, all hormones including thyroid hormone(s) T4 (Synthroid) and T3 (Cytomel) and Any natural desiccated thyroid med like Armour require doctor Prescription.
To dose thyroid you absolutely need to be tested for at a minimum Free T4 and Free T3 tests. Typically people need to be at least in the middle of the reference range for BOTH thyroid hormones if not a bit higher int he range.
Should i ask my doctor? Why can you buy natural thyroid hormone products and yet need a prescription for others? I just dont want to do something stupid.
I just had my thyroidectomy a week and a half ago and got my prescription for cytomel. My prescription is for 25 mcg every twelve hours and my doctor said to take it on an empty stomach (4 hours w/o food), no solids for the first hour after taking it, and no calcium or citrus for four hours afterwards. AHHH! How do I do this? I can deal with no milk in my morning coffee, but what about dinner? Any advice or help?
I think that this is just until my RAI in a month or so.

I went out of the country with out my prescription for cytomel. As a result, I did not take it for 5 days. I started back on it today, but have had cold chills (alleviated by aspirin) for the last 3 days. I have no other symptoms such as headache, sore throat, nausea. Could the cold chills be a symptom of withdrawal from cytomel?
About two weeks ago, someone in another community on another website was sure that there are OTC supplements containing actual thyroid hormones (pig, cow thryoid hormones). I am very sure that it's illegal to have any of these hormones without a prescription. I remember reading months ago that thyroid hormones are regulated by the FDC and that any OTC supplement claiming to support the thyroid must have the actual hormones extracted.
t think I am tolerating Armour that well, I asked my doctor for an alternative. He wrote me a prescription for 50 mcg levothyroxine per day plus 20 mg of Cytomel. It seems too off-balance to me, when my T4 and T3 are both low normal. I haven't taken it yet because I am scared to. I just keep on with the Armour? What do you think of this?
After 1 month I felt fine so I went ahead and refilled the prescription for 240mg. It was less expensive to get 3 months (insurance did not cover compound prescription) and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the armour for refills. No pharmacy in my area has it in stock. Everyone seems to be hoarding in case they can no longer find it. I wish my physician would have given me 60 mg to leave room for adjustment.
Just about every time I went in she would talk about not understanding the cytomel prescription. I just went for another tsh test and she decided not to prescribe the cytomel and only the synthroid. I spoke with the nurse and asked if the test included a t3 test and were my levels off. To my knowledge there is no legitimate source for obtaining T3 in the US without a prescription. If I may ask, why are you interested in T3 only. Also, are you not able to get a script from your doctor?
When it clears, you may have hyper symptoms, but you just decrease your dosage. Those who are trying Cytomel, or a low dose of Cytomel and have RT3 issues may not be giving it long enough. Three months feels like eternity when you are short of breath, but it may not take that long to start feeling better. In my case, my ND/MD took me OFF of the thyroid meds I was on, but she hasn't put me back on anything yet.

The pharmacy says they think it would be fine to cut the Cytomel in 1/4 and will give 112mcg T4. Emailed my doc for new prescription, waiting on reply.
I forgot that the last time I went to the endo, at 11:30 am after hurrying around to arrive on time, and having been up since 7:30, my temperature was 97. The doctor had no comment. It's been running between 96.1 and 97.2 or so most of the time in the day. If I get a temperature and feel really sick, it might go up to 99* Fahrenheit.
I am on t3 and t4 (Cytomel and Lyvoxl) and losing hair. Washing my hair (normally long and thick) yesterday, a nest the size of a golf ball came out. In fact, last Tuesday (3/4) I did another no-no and took 2 5mcg, so 10mcg of cytomel in the morning all at once. Have been doing this for 3 days now and still feel nothing. No change. No afternoon crash, as I feel the same before as I did after.
I have an appt with endo #3. Hopefully, this one will test and treat me properly, but I think it's odd how I don't feel any different with or without cytomel.
Normally a combination of synthyroid and cytomel would be given. If you are taking cytomel, it should also be spread out through the day (ie. multiple dosing) not all at once.
I would be rechecking on this or getting a second opinion. Another option considering that your FT3 is low is to switch to 'natural thyroid' whcih contains T3, T4 and other trace hormones. Armor is one, dessicated thyroid (erfa brand from canada), or compounded from pharmacy.
