Common Questions and Answers about Avonex injection side effects

avonex

462771 tn?1358355843 Hi Jason, Avonex was not an option for me from my neuro so I went with copaxone, a daily injection of a totally different type drug with no side effects. I passed on the Rebif because it has the same side effects as avonex, but is injected three times a week. If avonex, with its once a week injection had been an option I would have seriously considered it instead of the copax.
Avatar f tn Worth nothing is that the flu-like side effects of Avonex often are less troubling after the first few weeks or months, but I've never seen anyone suggest that the mood-related side effects dissipate.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry you feel so poorly. I haven't started any disease modfying drug yet, that will come in mid August. I've heard this about Avonex. The National MS Society website has some great info: www.nationalmssociety.org Here is what is a small portion of what is said about Avonex side effects: "Flu-like symptoms are a fairly common side effect during the initial weeks of Avonex treatment. It is recommended that you take your Avonex injection before bedtime.
1760800 tn?1406753451 Hi - I am starting on Avonex next week and of course am concerned about side effects but like the once a week part of the treatment. Those that are on Avonex how do you handle the side effects any tips you can give me?
Avatar f tn Does anyone know of long-term side-effects of Avonex? I've had about 8 or 9 injections so far - was diagnosed a few mos. ago. I will see the (MS) dr. in 2 days, a 3 month follow-up visit. Does anyone know of any questions I should ask her? Thank you very much! I appreciate any feedback.
233622 tn?1279334905 Curious how the Avonex has worked out for you. Have your side effects gotten any better? I finally saw an MS specialist for 2nd opinion and he recommends I start Avonex but I am hesitant. My neuro said MS YES, the specialist says MS MAYBE, CIS YES. I have had my head stuck in the sand for 2 months now. Time to wake up and smell the coffee (er, Avonex?). But am scared to commit to the drugs because of the potential side effects.
Avatar f tn … Time your injection perhaps 4-6 hours before you go to bed, so you can sleep through the worst period of side effects. For me and many others, the side effects diminished over time. You’ll eventually forget doses of OTC meds, or you’ll do an injection at a different time, and you’ll realize it’s no big deal. I was pretty rigid about injecting Friday at 5 p.m.
1125401 tn?1262898927 Hi Isabel and welcome. You're so right to not focus on what may or may not happen in your future. We have too much living to do today. As for the avonex, I can't answer your questions because I have only been on copaxone. I know Q and others who have been on Avonex talk about taking NASID's a hour or so before the injection and then heading to bed to sleep it off. From what I understand, your body will grow accustomed to the drug and the flu-like symptoms decrease over time.
405614 tn?1329144114 This is NOT the way side effects are from Avonex. If you took your shot on Monday and some of the symptoms you describe on Wednesday, it would not be from the Avonex. Avonex side effects, if they are going to occur, start not long after the shot and linger STRAIGHT THROUGH, until they end. Some people have little to no side effects. When I took Avonex for over 3 years, my flu like side effects, didn't let up until around the 3rd day after my shot.
Avatar n tn You can expect to be a little sore at the injection site for a while, but since you only inject once a week, there is plenty of time to heal up, if you rotate your injection sites properly. I usually feel unwell (fever, sore muscles, fatigue) for the first day or two - It's actually getting better over time though. The Avonex nurse will give you lots of tips to help with proper rotation, as well as managing side effects.
1967803 tn?1325679473 ve been on a titration dose for about 5 weeks now and I can still see the the bruise from my first injection. A majority of the other injection sites are red blotches that are about 2 inches in diameter. These marks are mostly visible on my thighs and stomach. Sometimes I get a little residual pain and a red welt. I don't inject in the same area twice, I pre-medicate with Ibuprofen, I pinch, inject, let go, rub, apply Hydrocortisone cream.
Avatar f tn re having a discussion on the MS forum about whether one can skip a dose of Avonex to avoid the major side effects during the holiday festivities. Some who take Avonex feel quite sick for a day or two. I'm lucky not to, but still this is a good question. Perhaps you could answer in terms of all 4 DMDs. Thank you.
5644375 tn?1371561016 I don’t always follow my own advice, but over time my body has acclimated to the Avonex effects, so those things are not as important. Many Avonex users report milder side effects after the early injections, and that was the case with me. Unfortunately, the effects are too strong with a few patients, and they can’t continue. I hope you end up being one of those with even fewer side effects than I have. Ask questions anytime!
Avatar f tn I have been on Avonex for almost 6 months. Just when I thought the side effects were getting better I feel awful again. I inject on Friday night and feel flu like for at least 24 hours again. Thanks Quix for that tid bit. I am considering going off of it. I do seem very depressed like I just want to quit all of my meds my job my house chores etc. and throwing a big pity party for myself. The job is not an option cause we really need the $$$.
Avatar f tn I have no complaints so far so good. When I go on the full dose I hope my side effects are mild...
Avatar f tn Hi fellow Washingtonian! I've been on Avonex for over 5 years and have never had a reaction like that! I mostly just have a headache or a little achey and that is only once in awhile. I would call my neuro pronto and/or biogen/idec, the makers of Avonex. I think they have someone on call to answer questions. Even the place where you get your Rx should have someone who can answer your question. Best wishes! I sure hope it clears up soon! That must be miserable!
405614 tn?1329144114 Last night I gave myself my eighth Avonex injection with the new, thinner needle, and it was much easier. I was so happy with it, and snuggled down in bed, with plenty of blankets, my ankle-length long-sleeved night gown and big fuzzy socks It got cold here last night, so I had the heater on more than usual. Fluffy was snuggled up against my side. I woke up about 1:30 am just FREEZING, I mean I had chills and was shivering so hard it felt like it was pulling my ribs out of place.
956292 tn?1334054869 Your excited attitude about starting the DMD, coupled with your quest for more information, leaves me confident that you will do well. Ojibajo offers some excellent advice, some of which I should even follow more religiously. However, as I start my ninth year of injections this week, my body has become more forgiving of a little caffeine or not enough water. And over time I've moved injection days/times/locations with confidence.
Avatar m tn Not looking forward to the shot this afternoon.
324913 tn?1302869517 In the beginning, I too, took it before bed to sleep off the side effects but on the good side, most of the side effects have vanished or are easily managed, atleast in my case. Feeling like "Crap" in most cases goes away over time. Hang in there!
Avatar f tn I wondered why in the world Biogen would even make Plegridy, given that it has the same potential side effects as Avonex and other interferon meds---depression, flu-like symptoms and liver problems, basically. It seems the main differences are that it is a subcutaneous injection and thus not deep, and that it is used approximately half as often as Avonex. Will they drop Avonex? So now I'm wondering if anyone here has used Plegridy, and if so, how things are working.
Avatar n tn True, the worst effects may come before sleep time, but any side effects are more likely out of the way by work time at 6 a.m. Sunday. And by being awake, you can maintain the dosing of acetaminophen or whatever drug at two every however many hours, and you can keep drinking lots of water. To Aroma_1, the official documentation says that you have to have injections 48 hours apart. I would recommend doing whatever you can to maintain a consistent schedule, especially early in treatment.
