Avatar m tn In the CAPRIE trial, clopidogrel (plavix) was equivalent to aspirin for patients with a recent (but not acute) MI. Some subgroups of patients with cardiovascular disease in this trial seemed to benefit more from clopidogrel than from aspirin: those with a history of bypass surgery, a prior stroke or MI, arterial disease in two or more areas, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Clopidogrel may be a reasonable choice for these patients.
Avatar m tn Your father has occluded coronary vessels (ischemia) and apparently high blood pressure being treated with irbesartan and lasix is a diuretic. Clopidogrel is an anti-platelet medication to prevent clots. The reduced ejection fraction of 16% may be causing fluid buildup in the lungs and peripherals (arms and legs). I had an EF below 29% and was diagnosed with congested heart faiure...congestion was due to fluids in the lungs.
Avatar n tn However, the dose needs to be adjusted well. Also aspirin can be combined with Coumadin. Aspirin can be combined with clopidogrel also and reduces the risk of stroke. Please discuss these options with her treating doctor. The risks of giving these in dialysis and HIV will have to be seen in light of risks involved with strokes. Take care!
Avatar n tn In patients with low or average risk for bleeding, the numbers of heart and stroke events prevented with combination therapy exceeded the numbers of major bleeding episodes that it caused. Coumadin and aspirin may be as effective or better than plavix depending on the variables for contraindiaction.
1723161 tn?1309771519 Thanks! Her doctor told me that she has many infarcts in her brain and that preventing atrial fibrillation attacks and stroke is very important. I pray everyday to God to give my mother many more years so she could gain more experiences in this world. Pradaxa here in our country costs USD$1.3 per capsule. Her doctor is worried to give her Coumadin because of constant monitoring and risk of bleeding.
Avatar m tn The beta blocker would not cause atrial fib. Going from paroxysmal to persistent atrial fibrillation is part of the natural history of atrial fib. 2. I think your doctor is right. People have variable numbers of pacs and pvcs, but you are still in sinus rhythm. The reality is that they will either get better, stay the same, or get worse. Time is the only way to know. A beta blocker may help decrease the number or rate of your SVT runs.
Avatar n tn Each medication has its own specific indications. For example, a patient who has atrial fibrillation and also a recently placed coronary stent, would have good reasons to be on both warfarin and plavix.
Avatar m tn Evidence is available from retrospective analysis of the CPARIE trial with clopidogrel that patients who have atherosclerosis in other vascular beds, such as prior ischemic stroke or concurrent peripheral vascular disease, benefit from receiving clopidogrel over aspirin. Some cardiologists have concluded that these patients, who are at higher risk of a subsequent vascular event, would benefit from combined therapy.
Avatar n tn The trials in non-valvular atrial fibrillation support the 7th ACCP recommendation that an INR of 2.0 to 3.0 be used for warfarin therapy in appropriate AF patients.
Avatar m tn I have a long history of occassional palpitations (PACs), which have become more frequent and occur most days in recent months, also with occasional episodes of atrial fibrillation. My EKG is normal. My recent annual echo shows, for the first time, a finding of mild to moderate anteroseptal and mild mid-anterior hypokinesis. EF is 72%, other measures are within normal, except mild LAE (4.1 cm) and mild MR, TR, PR regurgitation.
Avatar f tn Are there alternatives to coumadin for treating atrial fibrillation in an 89 year old male? This discussion is related to Live Health Chat: Atrial Fibrillation, April 13th (Special Guest Dr. Bruce Lindsay, Cleveland Clinic).
Avatar f tn //www.heart.org/en/health-topics/atrial-fibrillation/treatment-and-prevention-of-atrial-fibrillation/prevention-strategies-for-atrial-fibrillation-afib-or-af Lifestyle choices can ultimately make a huge difference. Sounds great that you do not smoke or drink. How about caffeine? Limiting that is also recommended. How is your weight and how much physical activity do you get? These are also on the list as key ingredients to prevention.
Avatar m tn predominant rhythm is sinus with occasional eotopic events. cannot exclude a brief episode of paroxysmal fibrillation. No patient diryr submitted with this recording. How serious is this. I am sooo scared. I have to wait 1 month for appointment. What kind of tests will the cardiologist do? Thank ytou for all of you answers and help.
Avatar f tn A few years ago when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation I was placed on an antiarrhthmic med, which worked well at the time. Several months later I realized I also wasn't having my migraines anymore either. So the med gave me a positive side-effect. I recall googling to see if there might be a connection. My conclusion was that there was. Conditions like tachycardia and migraines are often caused because ion-channels ()like the calcium are not functioning properly.
Avatar n tn He never had atrial fibrillation yet (except post-op bypass, almost everyone in that setting get atrial fibrillation for a couple of days). He is not very worried about atrial fibrillation. PACs may set off short runs of atrial fibrillation in rare cases but for the arrhythmia to be sustained, changes must have been made to the left atrium. You will not wake up one day being in permanent atrial fibrillation, you get warnings. Yes, atrial fibrillation is noticeable and different from PACs.
Avatar m tn t specify what arrhythmia you had ablated, was it atrial fibrillation? If they isolated the pulmonary veins, your new PACs are very unlikely to trigger any atrial fibrillation. It's likely that you EP knows where in the atria the PACs origin and by that is saying they are benign. PACs feels awful sometimes, especially when you are anxious.
Avatar n tn s important to realize that pacemakers are not an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation, but many patients with atrial fibrillation have a pacemaker to allow your doctor to put you on medications. It also will also not treat your PVC's.
Avatar f tn Regarding antithrombotic therapy in the setting of atrial fibrillation, the guidelines recommend this for all patients with AF, except those with lone AF or contraindications. The selection of the antithrombotic agent is usually based on the absolute risk of stroke and bleeding and the relative risk and benefit for a given patient. Based on the level of risk, most patients are either started on aspirin or Warfarin (Coumadin).
Avatar f tn Hi all I have posted in the past concerning my 15 yr old son who has been investigated for 2 sudden syncopes, with lots of episodes of symptomatic bradycardia..40- 45 Not at all athletic. He has recently had a repeat 24hr HOLTER.. My problem is I am English living in a small town in France, my french is not always the best. The test was done at our local hospital, and the results will be sent to the University hospital 120km away.. I have found this to be a slow procedure...
Avatar f tn ve kept track of the spO2 and pulse events for a few nights. Last night I had 32 spO2 events and 135 pulse events over about 7.5 hours and an apnea index of 4.3. I will have to go for a sleep study. I should have looked into this years ago but have been in denial!
287996 tn?1312023682 alone have atrial fibrillation an i had an EXTREME case of it probably in honesty one of the worst. It is easily treatable especially if it is considered a "touch" or random episodes and many people have it and don't even know they have it and its not reported. It depends on the frequency of the episodes and how the doc wants to handle it.
1618533 tn?1299870566 Just this June, we finally discovered the real cause of her recurrent stroke and that was her atrial fibrillation. I am really worried about her. Right now, we are already in our home, she can still walk talk and do her activities of daily living except household chores. She has mild expressive aphasia and unable to read most words. I believe that prayer can help a lot. I just experienced this during her TIA. God already answered my prayers even before i started asking Him for help.
Avatar m tn i recently had a 48 hour holter for palpitations. i had 'minimally invasive ablation surgery' last year (three holes in the right side and a sort of pulmonary vein isolation) for atrial fibrillation. i was in sinus rhythm briefly after the surgery, and after four months was successfully electrically cardioverted. a few months later, i noticed palpitations upon retiring and occasionally when leaning against something while seated. the holter was run to see what was up.
