Asacol and sulfa allergy

Common Questions and Answers about Asacol and sulfa allergy

asacol

Avatar f tn A sulfite reaction is different from a sulfonamide allergy (a reaction to sulfa drugs) because sulfites and sulfonamides are entirely different chemicals and have unrelated mechanisms of reaction. A person sensitive to sulfites is no more likely to be allergic to sulfonamides than any other individual and vice versa. " http://www.itmonline.org/arts/sulfa.
Avatar n tn It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar n tn Some times yes, sometimes no. Generally diamox is not used with sulfa allergy unless no other good substitute is avalable.
Avatar f tn My big concern is that I was diagnosed with a Sulfa allergy as a child when a Sulfa Based Opthalmic Ointment was used to treat an eye infection and I broke out in hives after using the drug. My daughter used Sulfa Antibiotics to treat a UTI and over the course of a week her face swelled up. The pharmacist had mentioned taking the medication and trying benadryl and if I have a reaction to seek medical treatment immediately.
Avatar m tn My son was smoking pot and was feeling better with it. He is alergic to sulfa medications and the Asacol resulted in Pancreatitis. Unfortunately most medications for UC are sulfa based. He also has g6pd, a blood difficiency and Gilber's disease. He has been on 6MP and the doctors are now talking Remicade.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a sulfa allergy as a child and haven't had any problems since as my doctors know of this allergy when prescribing medication. However, due to the geothermal activity and potential exposure to sulphur related gases/water, I wanted to know if travelling to Iceland would pose any health risks. I know that sulfa and sulphur are related but not the same but I am still concerned that I might be exposed to problems when inhaling gases or drinking water.
Avatar m tn However, you mentioned an allergy to sulfa drugs; Lasix (Furosemide) has a sulfonamide in its structure and there is a concern of possible allergic reactions in a person with a Sulfa allergy. However, if she has taken the medication and only is experiencing gastrointestinal difficulties, this is not a concern about an allergic response to the medication.
Avatar m tn Yesterday I received a Lipo-Plex injection (B12 with Lipotropics) that contains Methionine a sulfur containing amino acid. I have a Sulfa allergy (normally get an extremely high fever). Should I be worried? I haven't had any side effects. Feeling a little flushed (hot) but that is about it. Otherwise I feel great. Can I continue with these shots? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Yes, it is true that you will not necessarily have a reaction to HCTZ if you have a sulfa allergy. A small percentage of people (< 15%) do have cross-reactivity to HCTZ when they have a sulfa allergy. If you have had a severe reaction to sulfa antibiotics then we would probably recommend avoiding HCTZ.
Avatar f tn About 3 months back i had a kidney infection, they put me on sulfa base medicine and i discovered i was allergic to the sulfa and had a drug.reaction toit. They had given me a steroid shot and steroid pills to continue taking for about 8-10 days. Along with a antihistamine. They worked and rash was cleared up. The same rash appeared about 2 weeks later again i went to the doctor and they did the same routine (steroid and antihistamine). Cleared up again.
Avatar n tn Drugs like penicillin and sulfa group of drugs are most common cause for hypersensitivity reaction. As you have a history of penicillin allergy. If your body is hypersensitive to sulfa, reaction will be similar to that you develop for penicillin. Each individual are known to respond to a drug differently in drug allergy. If the drug is too much sensitized then it can cause more severe reaction.

Avatar f tn I found out the hard way in January that I have a severe allergy to sulfa antibiotics. It was hives head to toe for weeks and nothing really helped, I just had to wait it out. Well now that's gone but my system still isn't back to normal. I've switched, per a dermatologist's advice, to free and clear products, but four months down the road my hives have become chronic.
Avatar m tn I met my friend at an Irish Pub and had a fresh poured pint of Guinness. 3/4 of the glass down, my palms and neck was itching. I finished my pint and bought another round. 1/4 of the way into my next, my lips were swelling and my buddie noticed my eyes/ face were swelling. I tried to talk and within minutes my tongue had swollen to 2x the size and I could not speak. I was rushed to the ER where after 4 hours on an IV I returned to normal.
89592 tn?1391274422 saw him on the 5th and called him yesterday to remind him of my liver concern and he said the asacol would be okay. I also have a question for Dr Schiano to get his thoughts. Thank you...I will do some more checking...I did get the pamphlets from my drugstore concerning the asacol and checked online. UGH....I just dont want to do more damage.
Avatar f tn t cystic, but a bit more problematic than mild acne. Also, a sulfa allergy limits that option for treatment. Current regimen includes Azelex (for redness and inflammation) and Tretinoin. I'm curious if there is an effective treatment that takes the fibromyalgia into consideration.
Avatar f tn My doctor put me on Asacol and I had horrible uncontrollable diarrhea. I took it for a few months and decided constipation was less painful and embarressing than diarrhea. You may try drinking Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with honey. It's a natural remedy for reducing inflammation and it works.
Avatar f tn I believe that primary care manager thinks I am hyper now because of side effects from hydrochlorothiazide (am deathly allergic to sulfa drugs and this is a sulfa drug - unbeknownst to me until today).
Avatar m tn I enjoy the Lialda because I was taking 3 pills three times a day with Asacol and now I only take 4 pills once a day with Lialda. I haven't been on the Lialda for very long, but so far the results are good. I'm not sure that it is better than Asacol, but I think it is easier and equal in performance. You might ask your doctor if they have any prescription cards for Lialda. My doctor was given cards from Lialda, which you can use with your insurance.
Avatar m tn I knew for years that I was allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs (diagnosed at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle) but for some time didn't make the connection between my reactions and the penicillin in foods that I was eating. After religiously eliminating foods that might contain trace amounts of antibiotics (most commercial meat and dairy products and farm raised fish) I have been free of these terrible allergic episodes for six years now.
Avatar f tn Primor is an excellent skin antibiotic, and I prescribe it frequently, but unpredictable drug reactions to sulfa drugs (and many other drugs) can occur at any time during treatment, and ulcers in the ears and mouth can be one of the signs. In most cases, stopping the drug stops the reaction and healing occurs within a few weeks; in more severe cases, immunosuppressive medications may be needed to stop the reaction.
Avatar f tn I started Asacol almost two weeks ago, and it worked very well after a couple of days, but after almost two weeks, I got very weak, dizzy spells, fatigue, like the flu. It's been five days, and most of the time I need to lay down. I couldn't go to work today. When does it stop? I stopped the medication four days ago. It was for colitis.
