Aricept and memory loss

Common Questions and Answers about Aricept and memory loss

aricept

Avatar n tn It has been observed that Aricept improves cognition and function, which includes effects on memory and performing everyday tasks, hence it would have been prescribed. The effect of memory is exerted through one such chemical called acetylcholine. This chemical helps carry messages from nerve cell to nerve cell in the brain. Memory is lost by disrupting these messages between cells. It is thought that Aricept may help reduce the breakdown of this chemical. Hope this helps. Bye.
Avatar n tn However, I personally know about Aricept because I tried it for tardive dyskinesia and had a pretty poor response. My grandfather was prescribed Aricept for age related memory loss after a cardiovascular impairment. He couldn't tolerate it either. That doesn't mean at all its the wrong medication generally. Its just it has a fair amount of side effects for some people. But as anti-Parkinsonian medications can cause depression and other personality alterations that might be the one.
Avatar f tn She has moderate to severe short term memory loss and has been started on Aricept. She has also recently had an MRI of the brain. Could you explain: "moderate diffuse cerebral atrophy and chronic white matter small vessel disease"? Thank you!
Avatar f tn My husband has been taking 10mg of Aricept for 2 years now and I have not noticed any significant difference in his memory. Actually, my observation is his memory is becoming worse. I'm struggling with whether I should discontinue the medication since I don't see improvement and because it is quite costly. I also know Aricept is designed to slow down the dementia so if I discontinue it I'm wondering if he will become worse much faster.
Avatar f tn s due to also having EDS. However I have been suffering terribly for over 5 years with severe short term memory loss & was even put on Aricept (usually used for Alzheimer's) about 5 years ago & have become increasingly severly depressed. I seem to be resistant to all or most anit-depressants, years of therapy & more.
Avatar m tn If a person has not been diagnosed with alzheimers but is taking aricept, is it okay? will it hurt to be taking it?
704043 tn?1298056844 Hey, I took Aricept for five months to get over some cog fog. It was amazing, and kinda reassuring. I started with some samples, and noticed a difference immediately - I could follow directions, count change, remember conversations... Every time I ran out, I would wait a day or so and see if I noticed a difference. After five months, I reached a point where I felt normal without the Aricept - yay! I highly recommend it.
Avatar f tn First, Rehabilitation after brain tumor surgery that results in memory loss typically involves psychotherapy and cognitive therapy. Psychotherapy can help patients cope psychologically with the changes in their condition. Cognitive therapy is an intervention that can help patients learn and retain information.
338416 tn?1420045702 Well, as you all know, I've been taking 5mg of donepezil a day for my cognitive impairment. I'm on #4 today. Interestingly, I feel like I might have had a mini-flare at the beginning of the week (or maybe it was the allergies) - but despite that, my brain feels more 'on.' I'm remembering stuff better, and I'm able to stay on task better. I drove last night, and I felt safer - less distracted, more able to concentrate on driving.
Avatar f tn I am confused as to which is the most important issue and how I approach each. I see a neurologist this week and have been placed on Aricept. Yet still the confusion lingers. Please give me some directive on which is the most imperative issue.
338416 tn?1420045702 m on the 5 mg dose, which is the lowest it gets, and I have really noticed an improvement in my memory and my multi-tasking abilities. I'm able to remember phone numbers, and cook a complicated meal. (Made pork lo mein on Tuesday... yum.) I also seem to be grouchier, and less tolerant than I used to be. I don't know if it's the drug, or just me. I have been under a lot of stress this last month. But I have been a real beeeeeeeyaaaatch, if you know what I mean.
500374 tn?1210071413 However, I struggle with cognitive issues such as attention deficiency, short-term memory loss and inability to multi-task. Everything I've read about mid-brain strokes only mentions the physical long term effects. Is there anyone out there who is experiencing cognitive issues from this type of stroke?...or has anyone seen any information online that addresses this?
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with MS almost 2 years ago and have noticed much more frequent, severe mood swings. I am beginning to have more short term memory loss as well. However, there are times where I feel as though I can do anything and not need sleep. I am not being treated with steroids, and do daily injections of Copaxone. Are these mood swings and memory issues somehow related or located in the same area of the brain? Would taking Namenda and Aricept together help?
649926 tn?1297657780 I think out of all the drugs out there, Aricept is the best one for strictly cognitive problems. I've been taking it for four (five?) months now, and I've definitely noticed improvements in my short term memory and attention span. I feel safer driving to work, and I can remember phone numbers and keep track of change at the grocery store. The only real side effect I've noticed is long, vivid, but boring dreams.
Avatar f tn I have been on meds for bi-polar and have developed tremors and memory loss (phone #, SS# etc plus other). I have gotten off the meds, been a few days, and am scared that this will be a permanent change. Friends who hadn't seen me in months, came over recently and were shocked and concerned about me, telling me that I seemed like a zombie. My husband's friends are pulling him aside and asking what's wrong. This is NOT the normal me.
Avatar f tn t know anything about that - all I know is that before Aricept, I was in a gray mist, and after five months of Aricept, everything seemed to make more sense. Before Aricept, it was as if I had low water pressure - I just couldn't get enough juice in my brain to put thoughts together. On Aricept, suddenly my brain could make connections. The only trippy thing I noticed was an almost hi-def moire behind my eyeballs when I went to sleep.
338416 tn?1420045702 //clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00062972?term=aricept&recr=Open&rank=35 it is in stage III, and out of New York which is not TX, but maybe they know of other sites? Or you could do this study remote with the help of your doctor? I can't give you advice about talking to your supervisor - you have to decide that one.
1985196 tn?1402190098 that is they interfere with short term memory and cognitive functioning. Manic and depressive episodes also interfere with memory and cognitive function, so choose your poison. My doctor tried me on Aricept for cognitive functioning. Along with slightly improving my acuity I switched to mania. Oh well, another one bites the dust. I've also tried Nuvigil - I really liked it until it suddenly stopped working. That was a disappointment. But it was nice while it lasted.
Avatar f tn I have had memory loss over the past 2 years, I'm a 47 yr. old female. There are things I don't remember in the recent past and no matter how hard I try the memory doesn't come back. I have always been excellent in math, most of the time knowing an answer in my head so fast it surprised even me. Lately I can't even do simple math in my head and alot of times not on paper.
Avatar f tn Short term memory loss is almost always the result of injury to the frontal lobes. This can also effect emotional stability and appropriate and proportional emotional response. There can also be alterations in other "executive functions.
900662 tn?1469390305 After discussion with MS Neuro and my wife , we agreed that I should start Aricept , it is used mostly for Alzheimer, so its off label and he says it has shown great results. I do have a damaged working memory and slower processing speed, cognitive impairment effects every day in some small way. I won't reveal to any other family or friends that I ve stated this med, I just think I would feel self-conscious about people looking for my errors and mistakes.
429700 tn?1308007823 I also brought up the memory issues which are getting very, very bad. I will be starting Aricept. He thinks that it will really help me. I am very encouraged about this. He said that the studies don't show marked improvement for people with MS, but he has seen otherwise in his MS patients and has also heard otherwise. I am very hopeful about this. I know there's others on the forum that have tried it. I would love to hear about that. I also am going to start oral predinisone.
338416 tn?1420045702 I asked for a script for Aricept, got it, and was on that for three months. It felt very much like the Aricept gave my brain enough 'power' to jump over the holes. After a while, it was more like the brain knew how to navigate around the holes.
